Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

I have two people to thank today.

First up, community member Haxan for writing a community blog about -- and thereby introducing me to -- a fan made remake of the underrated Metroid II: Return of Samus for the original Game Boy (seen in the video above). I never knew it existed and now I do.

Secondly, I’d like to thank the mysterious DoctorM64 for actually creating said remake and changing my life forever! Okay, that may be a little dramatic, but, I’m telling you, this game is turning out nice!

Hit the jump for more details on this epic looking update of the black and white greenish and gray classic. But, please, heed my warning and get a towel ready. You’re going to need it.

[Via Haxan’s cblog]

Most fan remakes of classic games look a little sloppy (sorry, they do!), but this updated Metroid II oozes hard work and polish. It looks just like Super Metroid with, dare I say it, even better graphics and smoother animation.

You don’t even have to take my word for it. Try it out yourself by checking out DoctorM64’s tech demo of the opening portion of the game. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. I would accuse myself of hyping it up, but I have been playing it over and over again for the last few hours so … yeah … I kind of like it.

True, a lot of the level layout may be different, but the core mechanics and weapon upgrades are still there. In fact, I may go so far as to say Doctor’s level design is even better than the original. He seems to have the whole Nintendo collect-an-item-and-use-its-powers-immediately thing down better than the big-N itself.

Oh, and don't worry, the final game is promised to be mapped to a regular controller. Admittedly, the keyboard makes shooting missiles and firing in different directions a tad awkward.

Even better, you really need to check out the creator’s blog about the whole game design process. Not only is it endlessly fascinating, it really makes you appreciate the hard work and painstaking details that go into making even the most basic of games. Who knew the seemingly simple concept of Samus’s morph ball bouncing once it hit the ground would take days upon days to perfect?

The game is not finished yet, but the early beta is very impressive. Since Metroid II is one of my favorite games in the series, I can’t wait until everything is complete and ready to go.

So, again, thank you Haxan and thank you DoctorM64. I tip my hat to both of you for making my day.

What do you think? Would you actually pay top dollar for this game like I would? And ... did that really just say "Prince of Persia sucks?" Huh?

Nintendo should take note instead of being a buncha of legal ingrates. Old game remakes with updated graphics (Metroid collection for DS, Mother/Earthbound idea, etc) just like they did for Super Mario Bros 2 would be great, and dammit would make a killing. Id buy every single one.

P.S: I want a TP or WW style remake of Link to the Past. That would be epic

Wow, this is the first Gameboy game I ever had. So freakin awesome to see what the fan community can do to these games. Hopefully it will show Nintendo what ugrades they could do, but it probably wont. Nintendo's a little dense towards the idea of upgrading their games. Downloaded the demo, cant wait to play some.

Man this brings back memories. I may be wrong but this may be one of the first non-PC games that I have ever beaten without the use of a cheat or strat.

Awesome really, impressivly accurate physics. The need for bomb-jumping scares me a little, as do the the fact that showing the map repeatedly makes you sink through the ground :)

Looks very cool and I'd love to own it. I hope Nintendo would see sense on this on, because knowing them they'll either not act and ignore fans needs, or get the lawyers out to play.

Nintendo have failed miserably in the past when it comes to homebrew stuff, unless its done in japan (cue Jam Sessions). Their Wii Ware sounds good but they seem to be aiming more at developers than users to create content with it.

Do the smart thing Nintendo, give the talent a break and get this game to retail.

Agree, Id take 1000 2D metroids and never play another game again..There is something special about a 2-D metroid (not that I have anything against the Prime series)..

Well wait, if he changed the level layout then wouldent this more accuratly be what looks like a new Metroid game rather then a remake of an old one?

Never finished Metroid 2, I think it was the level design that put me off. If this ever gets done I'll get it for sure. Hopefully Nintendo will ignore it and put Dread on Wiiware or DS.

The thing is though: why does everyone always freak out when nintendo upgrades or tries new things? Take WindWaker for instance, or Metroid Prime. Now, I know you guys liked the old sidescrolling metroid games, but Metroid Prime was faithful concerning key gameplay concepts. It captured the look and feel of the games in a new, revolutionary way. It's to the Metroid games what Ocarina of Time was to Zelda. And, if I may be so bold, Metroid Prime and Ocarina of Time is the best both series' have produced so far. I guess I'm okay with remakes, but I think we should be more open to change. Someday Zelda itself is going to have to take another step. Will we be willing to let Nintendo take us there?

Cant wait for the full game. Loved it on the old gameboy. I actually liked metroid 2 more than super metroid. Something about being able to play it at school made it more special.

Although awesome, it retains the GBA Metroid sprites and the feel of those games, which I feel are far inferior to Super Metroid. But, this Metroid 2 remake is better than no Metroid 2 remake. Hopefully it retains the same ambience...running into cave levels was really creepy when the music pretty much just went dead.
