Warner Music wants you to pay more for DLC photo

Today, Warner Music CEO Edgar Bronfman spoke to Reuters about the impact of Guitar Hero and Rock Band have on consumers today. In addition to drawing the comparison between the iPod and the invention of MTV, he also stated that developers of music-based are going to have to pay more for the songs that they use.

The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small.
It must really suck to be an executive in the music industry, making money hand over fist with expensive DRM-ridden tracks and overpriced CDs. It must really be terrible to know that your product still inspires people to create, think, and do things differently. It has to be really hard to wake up every morning and realize that people are using your product in a different way through wildly popular rhythm games. Here’s the point though, Mr. Bronfman. By pushing up the price, you hurt my wallet. I wouldn’t buy the Jimmy Buffet Rock Band DLC if it was any more expensive than it already is. Keep that in mind.

Don't make me hate Rock Band / Guitar Hero DLC.

I like liking it.

yeah. raise the price and what that "too small" amount go to nothing as no one will buy it. f*ck you music industry executives, you guys continue to disgust me.

Last time I checked, it costs more money to buy songs as DLC for Guitar Hero or Rockband than it does to buy them on itunes. So what's the probs?

I'm going to make a wild guess here. I have a pretty good idea that Rock Band and Guitar Hero don't have a way to let people create their own tracks for the game (the guitar hero music creator appears to be very limited) because the record label execs threatened the game creators. i.e. "if you allow indie bands to make their own tracks we will not let you license or garbage"

@aaronf - think it was more along the lines of "If you allow people to make their own versions of our songs that we worked so hard to buy, then we will bust your arse's till they are bleeding. Then we will sue you"

I think both RB and GH should do the same thing then, say to Warner "Okay, we'll make your music more expensive - oh, and we'll licence it from you on a per transaction scheme rather than the blanket one at the min. If you dont like that, don't let the door hit you on the way out". Would love to see that music exec explain why all those lovely licence fees have suddenly dissappeared...

Way to kill the golden goose. Rock Band/GH DLC is the ONLY time I have seen people excited about music recently.

Those licensing fees are easy money that wouldn't be coming in otherwise. The music industry can eat a dick.

If DLC prices rise, you know what's going to happen?

Frets on Fire is going to happen, except it's going to be Band on Fire.

Then it's going to be the MP3 all over again.

It's not like fucking EA/Activision set the price they pay to the RIAA for the goddamn songs! It's negotiated with the record companies and both parties agree on the contract. He AGREED to the current pricing scheme, and now that he sees it's popular he feels "slighted" by the affordable cost that encourages consumers to go for it?

Motherfucking selfish ass piece of shit with no business sense. I hope he gets AIDS.
If you excuse me, I'm gonna go download me a new CD and play it for free in Audiosurf. Fuck the music industry.

I say give them what they want. Increase the price of all Time Warner songs. But not universal, or sony, or EMI, or independent labels, since we haven't heard any complaints from them.

What's that Time Warner? You only own 11% of the music industry? I guess this change won't affect us very much.

Nah... These bitches all run together, if one label ups the price, the others will all want a bigger slice as well - regardless of how little business sense it makes.

Me and some buddies just bought a 20 dollar M$ points card and all we were able to get was what.. 6 maybe 7 songs?

And that might be stretching it.

The music industry is fucked up. Musicians need to get day jobs.

This relationship isnt working.
Its not me, it's you.

I love music and Rock Band, but I would not pay much more for the DLC than I do now. I certainly wouldn't buy some of the music I was only marginally excited about. So I think raising the price would hurt the industry.

Raise the price, and I'll stop at 60 downloaded songs on Rock Band.

That's not something I want to do. That's $120, from a single solitary little 16 year old.

Think of how everyone else would feel about it! Oh no. Horror to be sure.

I fucking hate the music industry. I love music, I hate the people behind it.

It's why Trent Reznor is my hero.

If they start to charge the companies more for licensing, and then we get charged more for DLC, then it's a no go. Like a lot of others on here, I've spent a fair amount of money on Rock Band DLC, but I'm sure I wouldn't have spent nearly as much if I were only to get half of the content per buck.

Kinda how MST3K was killed by the film industry...they started wanting too much money, once the show got hot, and they couldn't afford the royalties anymore.

Greed fails.

The music industry is a absolute joke, and the main reason I was a little wary of those in the games industry linking up with them for GH and RB.

Their kind of greed will always see them losing, and their failure to adopt change will be the noose around their necks. Feel free to jump and dance that merry jig anytime.
