Warhammer Online begs players to come back with freebies photo

If you are a former subscriber to Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, then Electronic Arts would like a word with you. The Warhammer MMO that hasn't exactly been a magnet for PC gamers is trying to lure old players back with ten free days of Orc-slaughtering mayhem.

Any ex-player who returns to WAR between December 16 and December 23 will receive special in-game items to go along with their ten days. It's not as tempting as Age of Conan's rather desperate offer, but it's better than nothing.

"So much has changed on the battlefields of WAR over the past several months, and we are giving all returning players 10 free days to come back and experience these improvements for themselves," says Mythic. "The game runs faster and is more stable than ever before. We’ve really improved the RvR experience -- we’ve removed fortresses as a barrier to sacking the cities, we’ve implemented the new Underdog System, and you can always find a battle in Open RvR. There has never been a better time to step back into the Age of Reckoning and re-join the WAR!"

Not that they're trying to sound desperate or anything, right?

From December 16th – 23rd, Past Subscribers Can Return to WAR for 10 Days of Free Game Play, In-Game Item Rewards, and Other Bonuses

FAIRFAX, Virginia – December 16, 2009 – Mythic Entertainment™, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, has sounded a rallying call for past players of Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning® (WAR) with their new Call to Arms Reenlistment Campaign. All past subscribers of WAR are invited to return to the game between December 16th – 23rd to receive special in-game item rewards and ten (10) free days of game time to discover why WAR is now even better than ever!
Returning players must visit the Mythic Account Center (https://accounts.eamythic.com/) between December 16th – 23rd to reactivate their WAR accounts. Players will have access to all of their characters during the free 10-day re-evaluation period which begins upon reactivation. No subscription required.
“So much has changed on the battlefields of WAR over the past several months, and we are giving all returning players 10 free days to come back and experience these improvements for themselves,” said Jeff Hickman, Studio Executive Producer at Mythic Entertainment. “The game runs faster and is more stable than ever before. We’ve really improved the RvR experience – we’ve removed fortresses as a barrier to sacking the cities, we’ve implemented the new Underdog System, and you can always find a battle in Open RvR. There has never been a better time to step back into the Age of Reckoning and re-join the WAR!”
The Call to Arms Reenlistment Campaign will also offer returning players three valuable in-game item rewards: The Libram of Insight (+15% to Experience, Renown, and Influence; limited uses), The Signet of Cursed Company (turns a player into a skeleton), and Kemmler’s Arthritic Hand (enhanced Action Point regeneration). In addition, both current and former players will receive a 20% bonus to Experience, Renown and Influence while playing WAR from December 16th – 23rd.
Past subscribers can download the full game client from http://www.warhammeronline.com/download/.
Based on the popular tabletop war game from Games Workshop, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm conflict that will provide players with an engaging battleground for years to come. WAR is available now for PC and Mac, and is rated “T” for Teen by the ESRB. For more information or to download the Endless Free Trial, visit http://www.warhammeronline.com/.

First Conan, now this. Take it from an MMO fan since Ultima Online, people: both are horrible.

I played for a while during the Guild Beta.

It was good, but when you have a choice between WoW and a WoW clone, you go with WoW.

This game is fun in the first and somewhat the second tiers of PvP. After that it gets boring, and less fair since its usually groups from each side taking unguarded zones rather than defending and confronting. In the first two tiers theres tons of both attacking and confronting.

I honestly read the headline as "Warhammer Online begs players to come back with frisbies" That would have kicked ass.

They really changed a lot with the game recently, if you made an account and got to T4 I recommend you check it out.

Neither are horrible, but neither are worth the monthly subscription fee as it is now.

I loved Warhammer Online. More so than WoW, but I burnt out waaay early on that game and never looked back once I got back in to console gaming. The only reason I tried War was because it was... mother fucking Warhammer!! The most brutal and awesome of fantasy worlds next to D&D. WoW has no blood... talking cows and peaceful Orcs...

That said, I can never go back to MMORPGs. They really aren't my thing. The most fun I had out of both WoW and War was the scenario PVP stuff, which Warhammer was miles ahead of WoW, I felt. In the end though, its all about the gear and the end game grind. Bleh. I have other games to beat! Fuck MMORPGs.

Damn shame that nobody plays WAR. The beta was really promising and the community was really enthusiastic and helpful. I just hope it doesn't go the way of AoC.

I would still be a day 1 subscriber to WAR if my computer weren't so crappy. I really enjoyed playing it, but never got that far because of my PC. It seemed like a really interesting MMO to learn, but I was pining for anything that WASN'T WoW. I downloaded the endless trial, and had fun with that like old times, but I feel I can't get a good sense of the game until I've hit level cap. Maybe I'll take Mythic up on this offer.

Fun game! I only did a portion of the end game instances, but the RvR was great times. Well, it was for a while. As with most MMOs, things get stale, friends leave, and things don't look so rosy anymore. Maybe if they released a full on expansion I'd visit the game again, but then again... likely not.

@bluexy - Good point. I'd bite on an expansion of some sort.

I liked WAR, but the game ran terribly. It wasn't just my computer either; the game has a horribly optimized engine. Sorry Mythic, single digit FPS during keep battles is unacceptable.

Just tried going for this and it seems Europe is shit out of luck. As far as I could tell, this is for NA residents only. Awesome
