I just hope that there aren't a lot of cut scenes... I'm just personally not a fan of watching a game's story.
(and it would be awesome if that female character shown at the beginning is playable!!)
@Elsa
I belive she is in MP. BUT WHAT DO YOU KNOW YOU'RE NOT COMPETITIVE YOU HATE ESPORTS GAAAAAAAAAWWWD. ;D. Jk.
There is room in gaming for all kinds of genres and types. If there are people out there who want games which play like movies, then that type of game should be made. I don't have a problem with the existence of a game simply because it's of a type I'm uninterested in. I don't personally care for platformers, but other people do, so I hope they keep making them.
All of that being said, KillZone 3 was one of the most movie-like games I've played this generation, and you gave it a perfect score.
So?
Intent does not automatically impact quality.
Yeah, but nobody's talking about the quality of Space Marine. So your comment is utterly meaningless. It might be good, I simply said I wasn't a fan of the attitude in the dev blog.
No, you said you don't want a movie you can play. I think it doesn't matter, as long as it's a good game, which you then seemed to agree with. Make up your mind.
Games aren't movies. Very simple. Sure, a game may tell a story similar to the way a movie might, but it boils down to the gameplay, which is what matters most, at least to me.
People should make games to be.... Well, games. Don't compare the two; they're completely different mediums.
I don't consider Killzone 3 a movie I can play. From what I've played of Space Marine, it's not a movie I can play.
Fucking Dragon's Lair was a movie I could play, and that is a *shit* game.
This is supposed to be appealing? Games > movies. Why would I want to play a damned movie when I can play a video game? Damn.
But again, as long as there is a delightful amount of chopping, shooting, and praising the name of the Emperor all throughout.
Also Alex, if you know much about W40 Space Marines are not about pussyfooting around in cover. It's about charging in with a bolter till you're close enough to be slashing with a chainsword, and taking down an army that would make the Dynasty Warriors cringe all in the name of a Dead/Immortal God Emperor of Mankind.
If they had a cover system (Marines in lore do use cover obviously because tactics, though more often it's briefly till they charge in) they'd probably end up worried you wouldn't get to feel like the badass that the Space Marines are meant to invoke. I know that if I want a tactic cover grindfest, I'll go to gears of war, but for badassness? Yeah Space Marine might fit the bill nicely.
From what Ive seen of the gameplay it should be a fun game but I won't hold my breath for a decent story. That said, I am really hoping that I've just been rubbed the wrong way from the clash between the "We figure out the key tenets of those storys that really resonate with people" and "Was Dat Suppossed Ta 'Urt?"/"Dont worry captain, I left some for you."
Color me Un-Resonated
I'm sorry for double posting, but I have to say in response to your comment "The GW franchises are hardly a gold mine for great narratives to begin with... ", actually it's quite amazing how well the literature for 40K generally is in general. You can never go wrong picking up a book by Dan Abnett or Graham McNeil, and there are many more authors who contribute to the Black Library (a publisher exclusively for the GW franchises).
Look, I fething love 40k. Love everything about it so I am already excited for this game. But the whole "we want it to be like a movie you can play." and going on and on about the sound like its something never seen before just really makes it sound like you are trying too hard.
I don't want a "movie I can play". Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit were garbage. They need to stop it with the annoying hype that every company does nowadays and just make a good game. The more they talk about how unique and amazing it is the more everyone is going to be disappointed when it does not live up to it.
If it really is that damn good then leave it to *us* to say that after its been released.
They are selling a 40k games to mainly 40k fans. We dont need the over sell. Deliver a good product without the typical fawning over it and let us do the fawning.
Oh and for the love of the God Emperor, they need to give us the option to pick Ork blood colour. Greenskins have green blood (or deep purple according to some). Feth GWs retcon.
I know, Ive been playing the games since the age of 12 and I've read quite a few of the BL books but they nearly always wheel out the same basic plot of either a glorified witchhunt or a faultering war. That said there are some nice books, the last chancers and Ciaphas Cain are weird parodys of the norm while Lord of the Night and a couple of others branch out more.
My real complaint is that they could do more for the story other that what appears to be a string of cliche one liners and a cut scene or three with big explosions. On the plus side they seem to have the Orks and Marines conform to the fluff :)
