Warhammer 40,000 MMO shown at E3, built to last photo

THQ is doing really quite well of late, especially with its collection of original and promising games. It's doubtless been helped along by the Warhammer 40,000 license, with Dawn of War being a superb and popular franchise. Who can blame the publisher for believing that a Warhammer 40K MMO could last for at least seven years?

At THQ's conference call yesterday, the publisher revealed that it would be showing off 40K at E3, and that it believes the game will be its biggest money maker.

"The highest ranking revenue opportunity for us clearly is the Warhammer 40k MMO," stated THQ chief Brian Farrell. "Again, I encourage you to come by and see what we are seeing at E3 with that when we fully unveil it, but we think we are going to have a very competitive MMO.

"As you know, one of the big wins there is when you are successful with those properties, you have a long life on both revenues and cash flow, that's not just one year or two years it can go, five, six, seven years. So that's probably the biggest opportunity."

The 40K MMO is in the hands of Vigil, who proved themselves with Darksiders. It's in good hands, it doesn't tread the usual high fantasy ground, and everybody loves a little 40K. It's certainly got a better start than most wannabe MMOs, and I wish it all the best. It might be the kind of MMO I could really get into.

How confusing will this be and potentially cannibalizing to both THQ and EA? Warhammer 40K MMO and Warhammer Online MMO.

I like Vigil, and Warhammer is a great property, but let's face it, for an MMO to really have legs, it has to draw in plenty of women and casual gamers as well as the hardcore. The few girls I know who play MMOs like to spend time accessorizing their fairy elf characters, etc. I just don't see that happening with Warhammer 40K. And without that other half of the population, it's going to be hard to survive.

Having played WoW for a few years (have not picked it up in over 2 years) and then WAR for about six months (quit a year ago), I have a healty scepticism when it comes to MMO's.

I want something that is clear in concept where the disginers make changes in the existing game with thought torwards the players.

I played a Disciple of Khane (a hybred healer melee DPS) in WAR, and honestly it was one of the most fun expriences in a MMO I had. They really made the class work well and shine, for the most part.

Then they upped and completely changed the armor stats on the class, not a big deal you might say, but half of my gear I had worked my ass off for was now useless to the way I had built up my playstyle. NO RESPECT FOR THE PLAYER. At least give me a chance to change in my gear.

So yeh, I might give a 40k mmo a try, but I will wait atleast 6 months in, probably a year.

@HEL105

I know girls who are into games like Halo and COD as well, but they don't play MMOs. Of course, there are always exceptions, but Warhammer is about as dark, gritty and masculine as fictional worlds come. But hey, if Vigil can make me eat my words, more power to them.

I've always enjoyed the 40k universe but I can't help but think this is going to fall on it's ass. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

I really hope they don't do the Warhammer Online thing on just sticking races together into weird alliances to try to match WoWs two opposing factions. I'd rather they just went, there's the Space Marines, Chaos, Eldar and Orks. All on all...off you go!

Better release it before Blizzard makes a World of Starcraft MMO, otherwise people are going to say 40k MMO is a ripoff of Blizzard's MMO.

If someone made a genuinely good 40k mmo I would be addicted for as long as the servers are online. I really liked Darksiders, if the game plays as good as it did then I'm effing sold already.

@Lokust Actually, to be perfectly honest, if this game is anything like the Fantasy MMO, players will roll every race possible. Space Marines might be OP compared to the Imperial Guardsmen, but I doubt the playable classes will include guardsmen. If anything, all playable classes will be big and powerful, like Chaplains, Sorcerers, Veteran Marines, Nobz and Mekboyz, Farseers, Warlocks and Exarchs... We might even see Sybarites and Haemonculi if the game gets in every race possible. The only races I see having trouble existing as playable are Necrons, Tyranids... maybe Guardsmen and Daemons... anddddddd that's about it :P

I call dibs on Horus! I think a lot of people write off the name as one associated with little kids playing a tabletop game in some smelly, stuffy back room in a local comic store when it's a really deep and rich universe.

Pick up ANY of the books from BlackLibrary to see it's surely not something for little kids to be reading and much more oriented to a mature audience.

The Eye of Terror is now open for business!

I am interested in this. I hung WoW up about a year ago, and ever since I've been looking for something I can play to scratch my MMO itch. I love me some 40K, as I'm a regular at the local shop's league night, and I think I'd love to wreck some orcs in my Dark Angel colors.

As long as the ballistics are done right this might just become THE mmo for me. Right now it just shot to the top of my most awaited E3 announcements list.

How should this work? MMOs are all about a Character you build up. 40K Is all about fighting hughe battles with your collectet armys. Play as a Army??? Sounds more to me like they doing a MMO about the spin-off Inquisitor.

Loved to play this when i was young, second edition, Imperial Guard 20 000points
(now it isnt that much anymore but in 2nd edition this was freaking imense)

All for the emperor! ;)

@sir playedallot - I'm pretty sure they mean the 40k universe, as opposed to specifically the Warhammer 40k board game. Which all 40k based games, Warhammer 40k, Inquisitor, Necromunda etc are based in.

I'm VERY excited about this. I found out about Warhammer online early on in my time at school, waited years only be disappointed by a PVP-fest with very little depth. I REALLY hope THQ understands how make an MMO. I'm worried they might try and make themselves unique with some irritating gimmick, instead of letting the general interest of the title and lore do it for them.

I don't want it to go the way STO seems to have gone, a 40k MMO deserves more than to suffer mediocrity.

Know, THQ, that the Holy Inquisition is aware of your ambitions, and look upon you with approval.

But if you fail to deliver an experience worthy in the eyes of the Emperor's chosen servants, we will descend upon you, and the Galaxy shall shudder before our wrathful fury.
