WarDevil is going to look pretty if it exists photo

OK, step one of this post will be to remind you what WarDevil, a previously thought to be PS3 exclusive third person action game, is by linking to the only other post Destructoid has ever done about it waaaay back in 2006. In said post, which I am linking to here (thus completing step one), Nick "Fearless Leader" Chester correctly predicts that this game is most likely a piece of vaporware that we're never going to see. However, like all good vaporware that no one actually cares about, it won't stay dead.

Now for step 2, in which I inform you of the outrageous claims the devs are making about the game they claim still exits. The line on this one is that it's going to deliver Hollywood-grade visuals at 1080p and 60 frames per second with absolutely no compromises. Supposedly a group of journalists got to see the game behind closed doors at the Tokyo Game Show and came away impressed with the Digi-Guy (who?) developed game as Edge Magazine informs us this month.

WarDevil’s stake in the ground is its commitment to deliver ‘Hollywood-grade’ visuals: 1080p at 60 frames a second, with no compromise on the fidelity of its high-resolution textures and a suite of filtering effects. Remarkably, it looks as if it might just achieve it – with a version of the software having already been running smoothly on an original Xbox since 2006. It’s now leading on PS3 and being shown in closed-door sessions at TGS, the demo we saw seeming to prove that though the game itself is currently out of focus, the tech behind it already appears to be sharply defined," the magazine claimed. (Showing you the quote is step 3, by the way)

Finally, step 4 is to nod my head in sarcastic disbelief and say something like, "I'll believe it when I see it." Following that up by pointing out that a game with mediocre gameplay is still a game with mediocre gameplay no matter how pretty the graphics are.

I saw the tech demo for this game at E3 2006.

When this and project offset come out I'll be retired and blind.

Just read an interesting article about this game in EDGE - it sounds like the game is pretty meh, but they are interested in shaking up the industry with tech/pipeline. If they come up with something that moves the whole industry forward technilogically, I for one won't be complaining.

(FWIW the technology has something to do with baking in all the passes - lighting, bump, parralax, alpha - into a single pass rather than multiple. Per EDGE, they were running the game at 1080p on only ONE of the PS3 cores.)

LOL. What happened to delay a game 3 years? I mean really.

When you bite off more than you can chew, it's both technically and financially never worth it. I can't think of any vaporware titles that were worth the wait/came out. As such, I will not expect anything from this title, not even its release.

Apparently Edge actually thinks this is real enough to put this on their cover, as it says that although the plastic slipcase features AC2 on the cover, the actual magazine features WarDevil on the cover.

Either they've got nothing else this month or they truly believe this title is real.

I'm gonna wager a bet that it's the former and not the latter.

A phrase like "Hollywood-grade" is your very first hint that something isn't quite right.

Jesus, with a long dev phase, it'll never be profitable enough for a publisher to pick up. Good luck fellas.

Say hello to duke nukem for me.

That I have a serious hard time believing, despite being a PS3 fan, even I have limits. If the PS3 can do that with one core then the thing is a beast. Now I can see it using one core to do the 1080p but it can't do it and run all the data.

Wait. What's so amazing about 1080p and 60fps?

@mkshiranui That's sad. Really that's sad.
@Steel Brotha You realize your irony? Mass Effect is notorious for it's low res textures and horrid streaming capabilities (Xbox360).
@Clarke Are you serious? It's unheard of that's why, especially for a console. The higher the resolution the slower the FPS. For instance that's why Xbox360 doesn't do any 1080p it just upscales 720p. That way it doesn't have to slow down. I'm unaware of any PS3 game in 1080p that doesn't make use of lower textures or less game content to make 1080p at 30FPS happen. The idea of 1080p at 60FPS is like saying god is inside the console. Sounds like lunacy.

Is graphics really all you care about? I know a system that can beat any of the three consoles in graphics quality: it's called nature.

@mkshiranui Well hell I play with nature's tits all the time, but if nature was all we needed, we wouldn't have books, movies, or games now would we. Graphics has advanced the computer industry for YEARS. Almost 80% of the consumer market is propelled by high end users and the demand they place on the market. The same components used in the consoles.

If it wasn't for graphics whores you wouldn't have an industry as advanced as it is now and you sure as hell wouldn't even be playing on a PS3, Xbox360, or a Wii. If all we needed was 480i and great gameplay then we would all just keep playing on the SNES or GENESIS.

Unfortunately those with money is what the industry develops on. Some of us want to use the most advanced stuff, I mean hell if you want great gameplay why not drop the whole gaming thing and play with other people in direct social contact, cause that's what it sounds like you need.

I'm really not certain whether to be severely insulted or not. I'm just pointing out that relying on those rare few who can afford to pay for this sort of technology is not only isolationist but is an economic dead end. If I'm going to get called that sort of nonsense for mentioning the truth, I'll take real people any day.
