War never changes: Fallout 3 Teaser!

     Announcements

Tipster Jecrell not only gave us the above YouTube link to Bethesda's teaser trailer for Fallout 3, but he also directed us to Voodoo's blog, which has some extra info on it. Pete Hines, Bethesda's PR guy, says:

1) Yes, that's in-engine (in-engine means it's done with game assets in our rendering engine, but isn't done real-time. If it was done in real-time, that'd be gameplay footage. This isn't something, for example, that was sent to some house [e.g. Blue Studios] so they could build assets and render it out, and create something for us to release [e.g. Dawn of War 40K intro cinematic]).
2) Yes, that's The Ink Spots singing "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire"
3) Yes, that's Ron Perlman [voiceover man extraordinaire of Fallout 1 and 2].

So in the end, it appears the Fallout 3 teaser really was just a teaser: despite all my wishing and hoping that it might shed some light on our most burning questions about Bethesda's first-ever Fallout title, it really only gives us a location (the east coast, as shown by the lead-up concept art screens and the Washington Monument visible in the background), a vague release date (Fall 2008), and the presence of an organization that everyone knew would be present in the game no matter what (The Brotherhood of Steel).

But what of the combat? Will it be realtime, or turn based? Will the game be first person, a la Oblivion, or stick with the top-down isometric view famous to the series? Can I recruit Dogmeat? The teaser (like all good teasers) answers none of these questions.

I never played any of the Fallouts, and probably will skip this one too. I'm that f'n tired of these teaser thingys and insane hype that could kill large mammals.

But.... Ron Perlman....

@ Rockvillian

I guess you skip over everything known to man, as advertising is hype. Fallout 2 was my favorite you shouldn't look over things because of hype, do you own the big rigs style games then ?

Hopefully Bethesda doesn't mess this game up!

As someone who never played either of the previous Fallout games I have to say that...

...this teaser didn't really do much for me at all. It was nicely done, the music gave it a nice nostalgic feel but if I didn't know any better I would think this is just some sort of FPS set in a post apocalyptic world.

Thats just my tuppence though. Given that the game doesn't come out for another year and a half they probably aren't interested in marketing to people like me yet, and it pretty much looks like they have the Fallout fans excited so they've done something properly.

I think the big question answered today was whether or not Bethesda understood and could recreate the atmosphere of Fallout, which was one of the broader questions and doubts in the minds of the Fallout Faithful. If you ask me, I believe Bethesda answered that question quite well. The entire video screamed "Fallout" to me, and had I no known Bethesda made it, I wouldn't have been able to tell that this was a different company than Black Isle.

@mix

Yeah I do pass up lots of games, but usually end up playing them a couple years down the road or borrow them from friends.

Honestly though, with this it's also a bit of Bethesda animosity, namely towards their secretary who misplaced my portfolio when they were hiring for oblivion (and only accept one application per person). See, I also carry petty grudges too cause I'm that cool.

Fallout is one of my favorite series of all time hands down, and if Bethesda can deliver a sort of Oblivion after the Bomb, I will gladly hand over any amount of money they demand.

Fall '08 though. That sucks out loud.

I agree with x51, that seemed to capture the atmosphere of the Fallout universe pretty well, with the innocence of the Teddy bear and toy then the propaganda-ish posters for enlisting during the wars then the present day post-nuclear atmosphere of the surroundings and the Brotherhood soldier. Its like watching a small time line unfold.

If I see one more trailer that starts with a extreme close-up, pan back to some scenery, and then closes in on some spacemarine/spartan/armoured soldier and ends in a catch line I am going to puke on the developer's grandmother. Look how original we are, oh and check out this viral marketing... Your not supposed to tell us that it's viral marketing we are supposed spread it around because it is interesting.

Still, I can't wait.

Oh boy, some harsh responses. I felt a chill when the music popped on. I haven't found anything that could send chills throughout me like the opening to Fallout 2 (maybe the teaser for BioShock), but Bethesda certainly milked them from my skin. Before I jump on the Fanboy Bandwagon though I'd like to see some gameplay footage. :fingers crossed:

Although I am too young to have played the Fallout Series, the games must have been pretty good from what I've heard and, well, Bethesda's making it, so I think I'll check this one out.

I do have one major gripe about the teaser though: who's broadcasting radio signals after the end of the world? And why are they playing "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" by The Ink Spots? Would radios even work with all that radiation around? Maybe people who played the original games know what's going on, but I'm confused.

That was shit!

THE shit, that is.

Or maybe shit hot?

I do hope that this game is, indeed, THE shit and not just plain run-of-the-mill shit. Bethesda would have to fuck up pretty bad to make Fallout 3 be shit. Seriously, as someone already said, I would be fine with post-apocalyptic Oblivion, just so long as they kept to the spirit of the previous Fallout games as far as story and dark humor goes.

@Deus

They are playing "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" by the Ink Spots because they used "Maybe" by the Ink Spots for the intro of Fallout 1 and "A Kiss To Build A Dream On" by Louis Armstrong for the intro of Fallout 2. They don't really need any more reason than that, at least for me.

@stevenjazz787

That's not really a trailer so much as what will likely be the actual intro to Fallout 3, or at least the first half of it anyway. The intros to Fallout 1 and 2 were very similar to that, as well.

Fallout 1.

Fallout 2.

Also, Fallout (and thus the Brotherhood of Steel, depicted in the trailer) came before Starcraft's space marines and Halo's spartans.

Yes, I am a Fallout fanboy. I don't even pretend to deny it.

Oh, and here is the "War. War never changes" speech from the second part of the intro of Fallout 2, which was missing from the previously linked video.

The music is a throw-back to a time before the nuclear fallout. As you'll see in Fallout 1 and 2 much of the technology was fabricated based off from pre/post world war 2 designs as well as the 50's nuclear threat and propaganda. It's truly a marvel to see an alternate universe were the bombs fell roughly around that time and the makeup as well as the atmosphere of the game revolves around this concept. I'm not sure if this post will be enlightening in the least.

When I heard Ron Perlman's voice at the end, my first thought was "Slade".

Never did play the Fallout games, but with all the coverage it's been getting all over the internet I probably *should* check them out sometime.

You know guys, maybe there's a little more meaning to 'War Never Changes' than we may think, going even farther than OK's point.

War never changes.
Fallout = war
Fallout never changes?

Maybe that was Bethesda's sneaky way of reassuring us all that we have nothing to fear of first-person silliness and whatnot.

But again, like OK said, I'm a fanboy and will do anything in my power to justify what I want to hear. XD

Even if they released a Fallout 3 that had the exact same graphics and gameplay mechanics as the last two games, dated though most other people would probably consider them, I'd still be plenty okay with that as well.
