Wanted: Weapons of Fate producer disses the Wii big time photo

Tired of hearing people trash talk the Wii? Well, sorry to have to pile on to your woes, but the dissing goes on. This time, it's from Peter Wanat, who's worked on titles such as Scarface, Chronicles of Riddick and the upcoming Wanted: Weapons of Fate. Speaking on the Invisible Walls podcast, Wanat says third party developers aren't really finding success on the Wii and compares the Wii to the "f*cking Sega Genesis" (which is an insult to the Genesis if you ask me).

Other key words from Wanat include talk of "crappy graphics and basic control play". He also says that the Wii is for "little kids and old people" as well as "hardcore Nintendo fanboys."Oh boy ... can you feel people warming up to destroy this guy?

In all honestly, the entire group on the podcast seems to openly poke a bit of fun at the Wii, which seems to echo the majority opinion of the little console. There are some pretty interesting takes on the current state of third party games for the Wii as well, naturally which gets you thinking about the types of games that the Wii is lacking. Do you feel that the third party situation for the Wii could improve this year?

It's kind of hard to see the 3rd party situation improving, because this has been Nintendo's problem for the last three generations ever since they drove the 3rd parties away on the N64. They unleash an impressive slate of first party titles early in the console's life, but by doing so they blow their load early and have nothing else in the lineup. Then there's years of drought, followed by some more good first party titles near the end of the console's life. Whatever is going on with Nintendo, they just don't get how to work with 3rd parties on a home console. Everything that is going right with the DS is going wrong with the Wii. With the Wii's last gen graphics becoming more apparent over time and the system's new branding as a home for shovelware, I don't see how they can turn that around.

i think he's bang on the money. The Wii was brilliant for a week after i got it, perhaps a couple of hours after getting WiiFit and made the 3rd play through of Godfather that bit more brutal (motion control executions!)

But I've not touched it for a long time, got a new telly and decided not even to plug it in. Gave it to my parents (old people) who only really turn it on for the neices and nephews (little kids).

So yeah I think he's hit the nail on the head there.

Although, the Mega Drive was fucking bad boy for it's day. It was THE console for cuttng edge gaming (oh my god this industry moves fast) but I still have mine in the loft, too many memories.

I listened to the podcast and it sounded like sour grapes from a so called "hardcore gamer" and a guy making a game that probably wont sell on the consoles it will be released for, dismissing the wii then saying Nintendo had the right idea moments later.

Everybody is aware what the wii is , its aimed at a wide audience. Yes Nintendo doesn't have the third party titles it once had but given the choice offered by Sony and Microsoft the choice is still there.

As much as you might want to argue with the guy he does have a point. While the Wii does have some good 3rd party games for it the vast majority of the games out on it are your basic shovelware. Kitchy games to keep the wagglers wagglin. I own a Wii. And like sexualchocloate said when I first got it I liked it. Playing Zelda then Mario and moving on to No More Heroes. Even my folks got into it with Wii sports a little. But since the end of last summer I haven't turned the thing on once. And while Mad World looked cool I couldn't get myself to get it, there are too many titles I've yet to play through on my PS3 to give it a go.

It is sad that the third parties aren't getting their due when they do make a great game for the Wii. I'm really hoping that it changes soon. House of the Dead: Overkill was well worth my money. As were Zack & Wiki and Okami before it. It would be a shame if the tide doesn't turn. I need to play a Wii sequel to Resident Evil 4 (that's not a Chronicles game [though, I'm eagerly anticipating that]). There's a lot of fun experiences that we're missing out on because of the audience that the big N is catering to.

Do you think if Nintendo was more considerate of it's "core" fans, they'd be more apt to purchase the games that are made for them on the system? Are we not buying really good 3rd party games because we feel that Nintendo has slighted us?

Holmes would not be the only guy in line to give this guy a "pep talk". It's the kind of attitude this guy displays that has placed the Wii in its current position. Rock star-acting game developers whose opinions of themselves are so high that they refuse to work on the Wii simply because they'd lose cool points if they did so. Since it doesn't serve their purposes, they decide to bad-mouth the thing... with FALSE information, by the way.

I mean, he says that only Nintendo and the Ubisoft Petz line are making money on the Wii. That is obviously untrue, as is the notion that spending any more than $500K on Wii development will prevent you from making any money whatsoever.

It's bogus.

Poor Wii.
This is, what, the fourth time or so that some industry person publicly bashed the system? Let's see if old Petey backpedals tomorrow like the others.

The sad fact is, Nintendo is marching to its own drumbeat, as it always has, but their system for "kids and old people" is still outselling everything else out there (aside from its own DS, maybe), so as long as that's happening I don't think anybody in the suit department is going to care one way or the other.

Their third party lineup may suck for the most part, only having the occasional gem (Madworld, No More Heroes), but it mostly seem like Wii bashing is the in thing to do. Nintendo is making money, which is giving them the opportunity to go in their own direction, and for some reason people seem to be outraged by this.

Hell, kids and old people deserve a system to play, too. If Nintendo wants to make a "casual" system, for a different segment of gaming audience, then more power to them. How many of those kids are going to get hooked on games and eventually buy something like a 360 or PS3? My grandmother (a rumored "old person") is playing video games, something I never thought I would see. So Nintendo is bringing the idea of games to a whole new audience. I may play my 360 more than my Wii, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate what Nintendo is trying to accomplish.

Man, though, that Genesis reference? Wanat should be publicly apologizing for THAT. Any system that brought the world Sonic, Shining Force, and Phantasy Star is deserving of reverence!

I think the best part of the show was when the dudes running the whole thing did NOT call Wanat out on his dubious claims. Even the most disgruntled of the anti-Wii gamers should have called him out on what sounded like sour grapes more than anything. And why was Wanat sour? Because the ONE game he brought to the Wii, a port of Scarface: The World Is Yours, did not set the world on fire. Yeah, Pete, I can see how that game's less-than-ideal performance in the market could completely shatter your expectations of what can succeed on the platform.

I originally wanted a Wii just to play the Nintendo titles like Brawl and Zelda. The only third party stuff that looks interesting is Madworld and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles. Aside from a handful of games period the only other thing the Wii ever seems to offer is the ability to download older titles. I think these features would be great but if the Wii wants to remain more than average then it needs some more "unique" games.

Every weekend have 6-8 friends come over to play mariokart. Half are girlfriends who maybe played some SNES back in the day, but otherwise don't game. No other system can do that. Wii is the opposite of Genesis anyway. Wii vs ps3/360 is more like NES vs Gen (til SNES came out)

People keep saying that the Wii has no good gamer games, but I see plenty on my shelf. People just don't want to try out some of the stuff on the system, or have some kind of strange notion that if the game isn't wildly violent it can't be good. Or they're like this guy, and don't want to play games that aren't HD photorealistic.

As a recent example, Kororinpa: Marble Saga is an amazing game, made for gamers, but nobody is playing it because it doesn't have buckets of blood. The game's been completely ignored in the press as far as I can see. Madworld wasn't the only great game to come out on the system that week, people.

Another lazy developer who doesn't know how to make a fun good looking game... How about you hire smart programmers who know how to work within limitations (not just buy an unreal engine license), find art directors who know more than creepy faux-realism, and come up with new gameplay ideas other than "replace the x button with waggle".

Super Mario 3 is still a better game than half the stuff I have on my shelf, and the NES had less power than some watches.

Honestly I think some of those points are valid. Between me and my roommates, we have all three systems, and in a month, we play the wii maybe... like 3-4 times, and that's only for some Smash brothers or Mario Party. Other than that, the 360 is the console most used in my apartment.

I worked at GS for a while, and we had more returns on crappy wii shovelware than any other games on other systems. Not to mention the massive amounts of customers asking, "what's good on the wii?" and when I pick out all the good games (first party titles), they already have them all. I'll say it's looking a little better with games like Madworld and couple of other games, but I'm glad I didn't buy one.

Bullshit.

Wii is outselling simply because it's a better system. Yup, it's third party games suck ass, and yup, most of the other games are simple ass wagglers. But how do you measure a systems worth? It's a system that sells a shitload and is played by everyone. Just because it doesn't have deep RPGs or FPS or whatever (yeah, like, Wanted... that game is just dying to suck it hard) doesn't add any sort of demerit.

I don't even have the Wii - I sold it and got a 360. Because I wanted more "mature" games with deeper systems, etc. But I'm not fooling myself for a second thinking that XBOX is somehow superior. In fact, I get pissed off at the XBOX lineup because it seems like every game wants me to sit alone in a dark room and game with some nerdzz on the internet instead of playing with my friends, in my own house. Angry programmers like this need to get outta town. And for the record, Genesis wasamazing.

Just cause they cant put some pretty graphics on the game and expect people to buy it, doesn't mean good games aren't possible on the Wii. Dokapon Kingdom, Madworld, No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki are just only some of the games on the Wii that are from developers other than Nintendo and are all AMAZING games. This guy needs to stfu. I wanted to sell my Wii but the Girlfriend wouldn't let me. I was gonna sell it and finally buy a PSP. I'd even do a straight trade. But she believes one day she's going to go back to Wii Fit (she played it for maybe 2 weeks when it first came out).

Now I hate the damn thing even more, because every time I look at it, I think about how I could have a PSP right now...

This is some bullshit. He's bashing Nintendo for how third party's are making shit games? Come on, this dude would be an intern if he developed games for Nintendo. Yes the system is underpowered, and yes there is a shit ton of shovel ware on the system but that is not Nintendo's fault. Should they start forcing game companies to only make 2 games a year to prevent this like they did back in the NES days? Nintendo makes great games, Metroid Prime, Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess are better than almost any game this generation. Add in some games by third parties that arent looking to make a quick buck (Mad World, No More Heroes) and its a good game library. Nintendo isn't forcing these lazy third party developers to make shitty party games, so I dont see why they get all this heat.

When devs have an attitude like that, its no wonder the Wii gets bad third party support... The guy isn't anyone we should care about but I wouldn't be surprised if many other developers think like this, its a shame really, because he says many incoherent and contradictory stuff and overall just fails at common sense.

I guess much of this aversion comes from being a mediocre dev that can't make his game stand out without some obvious graphic improvements.

I'll stick with my "niche mainstream market" console.

All this Wii bashing just seems like elitist (core) gamers not wanting to share the video game market with anyone else but them selves. If you play most of your games and have most of your friends on a 360 or PS3 then why bother trying to convince Nintendo to make (your) games for the Wii. Nintendo has always been centered around being the family computer and third-party developers that were once dedicated to the NES/SNES have since moved on to consoles that are dedicated to their (core) audience.

The bad news: Third-parties will always have to struggle on Nintendo platforms.

Though, third-parties don't have much room to complain about if the quality of their games are bad. However, good games like MadWorld deserve to sell well but the Wii userbase is a rather unpredictable when it comes to mostly supporting original third-party IPs. However, specific titles such as de Blob, Boom Blox, Red Steel, Shaun White, Sonic & Mario, No More Heroes, Umbrella Chronicles, Guitar Hero, Sonic & the Secret Rings, RE 4, Rock Band are among some of the third-party titles that have all sold well.

The good news: 2009 already looks better than 2007 and 2008 for gaming and most of that is due to third-parties in my opinion. Hopefully, Nintendo can make it even better with some E3 game announcements that will be released this year.

I'm looking forward to around 20 or so upcoming Wii titles this year but those don't include all of the ones that are still TBA.

I've tried games like Madworld, Let's tap, Dead Rising (which is a good game if you don't make any comparison of the 360 version) and Deadly Creatures and I think that these developers are finally getting how to work with Wii specs.

I seriously don't understand people who bash the Wii. I don't even think the opinions of the people who say it's "bad" matter anymore. It's obviously not bad, since it's making more money than any other electronic device in recent history, and that trend wouldn't continue if everyone hated it.

I have more Wii games than I have for my PS3, and more than the 360 games I had when I owned a 360. If you can't find games worth playing on the Wii, then you're obviously not smart enough to be playing games in the first place. If you think graphics make a game, then fine, you're entitled to believe that if you want. I'll just be over here playing the Wii in addition to the HD stuff, meaning I'll be having more fun that you. It's that simple.
