That Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 bundle that got announced late last night looked pretty sweet, to be sure, but even if you aren't into Call of Duty, you may have pricked up your ears at the mention of that 250GB HDD. What if you wanted it separately, though? Kotaku asked, but it seems like the answer was no:
"This hard drive is not being sold separately," said Larry Hryb, boss of Xbox Live.
Well, bummer. I haven't gotten around to filling up the HDD on my360 just yet, but I'm sure many other gamers would really like an option for more space. On the other hand, if it was sold separately, it would likely be pricey, as the 120GB HDD already retails for $150. Would you have wanted to buy the 250GB separately, if it had been made available?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
However it's pretty lame of them to do that.
Hopefully, MS will learn their lesson and put regular SATA ports on their next console. I'm not counting on it, though.
Fuck paying Microsoft's prices, they couldn't justify them if they wanted to.
i will not pay £90+ for a 120GB 360 HDD when i could get myself another 2000GB of storage space for the same money. anyone that knowingly does is a fucking moron.
Besides, if the 250GB HDD was sold separately, I'm willing to bet it'll cost $200 by itself.
So the consumer can't repair, replace or expand the Hard Drive?
They are forced to buy a whole new XBOX? BWAH HA HA HA!
I wish fan boys did a better job of making substantive claims for the consumer friendly superiority of PS3 over crapbox3crappy, because this new fun fact seems to end the debate.
Can you attach a USB External Hard Drive to the XBOX360? Is it possible to get the xbox to boot from USB drive once it's proprietary HD is detached?
Is it even possible to detach the proprietary HD?
I gotta know more about this. How much does it cost to send XBOX360 back to have HD Factory Replaced?
250 GB should be $75 dollars with a retail markup already

$200 dollars ? like one of the commenters suggested should get you 2 Terabytes. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136344
Microsux strikes again...
But if you really want that 250GB you can just do it yourself. Currently the firmware you can flash onto a Western Digital drive limits you to a maximum of 120GB (it only supports the official sizes) even if your drive is bigger, but that's guaranteed to change within days of the release of this pack. It's not very hard to do and it's way cheaper than it would be from Microsoft anyway.
MS, if you wanna give me an incentive to download crap from your service, you gotta at least try to make it appealing to download crap. Large HDD's take away that fear of being conservative with my space.
I can put this into Kotick terms if it makes it easier...
How on earth could I want to waste space and money on a COD Map Pack when I've got COD installed on my HDD and using all the space I wanted to allot to a Map Pack?
Maybe if MS doesn't want to do it, Kotick will make them.

@realbigwords
You're posting links to 3.5" HDD's. The 360 and PS3 are using Notebook drives, which do cost a bit more and are limited to 500GB or less, but it's still no reason to gouge people for $150 for a 120GB drive.
$70 seems reasonable for a 120GB drive.

As much as your post was obvious trolling, I can't help but want to clear a few things up.
So the consumer can't repair, replace or expand the Hard Drive?
~Yeah, you can. Get a cable free from M$ and it's a simple copy and paste from the old one, or from files available on the internet if your old one is fucked.
Can you attach a USB External Hard Drive to the XBOX360? Is it possible to get the xbox to boot from USB drive once it's proprietary HD is detached?
~Yes, yes, and yes. Although, like above, you need to copy the relevant parts to your USB drive/external HDD if you want to boot it, or recognise the external hdd as an Xbox MU not a storage device.
Is it even possible to detach the proprietary HD?
Yeah, it pops out pretty easily, you just press a button.
I don't want to appear like I'm defending Microsoft because I'm not, they're cunts, but maybe next time do a little bit more research before you get all fanboy up in this crib.
Seriously, what the hell, Microsoft. I saw that $400 pricepoint for the bundle and not only got hopeful for a 250GB HD, which I desperately need after downloading tons of XBLA games, videos, and game add-ons (like every Rock Band song) on my near-full 120GB HD, but also hopeful for it being at a reasonable price. (The 120GB HD launched at $180, which was just ridiculous.) And yet, you won't even release it to market? What the hell! There's a limit to how much I can fit on that damn hard drive!
Releasing a bigger hard drive at a reasonable price point just makes good business sense! How am I supposed to spend more money on all the content you guys release that I want without an affordable hard drive or even a bigger model?
I would understand bundling a first party exclusive with a console, but this deal seems to benefit Activision much more than Microsoft.
I haven't delt with this site before, but the 'say' they have 120GB HDs for the XBOX360 for 80 bucks?
So that doesn't sound like an extreme markup.
but on the other hand if all this is, is a "notebook" harddrive a 250 GB HD is currently 58 dollars.

Thanks for the info about the External USB HD being an option. That would seem the cheaper and universal alternative. Even if software will only support a portion of it up to 120 GB or possibly in future 250GB.
You can even backup your DLC and savegames via Windows, and restore them to the 120GB HDD after flashing it.
The whole "propietary" thing and the overpriced HDDs become a lot more ridiculous after you realize what is actually inside that case.
