Square Enix Senior Vice President Shinji Hashimoto has been talking, seemingly against his will, about Chrono Trigger and the posibility of a followup. It is one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, but according to Hashimoto, this isn't reflected in the sales, and its alleged poor performance is the reason why a sequel is yet to come.
"Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger?" he laughed when asked about the game. When he was told that the game was adored by fans, his response was quite blunt: "That's not what the sales tell me!"
"If people want a sequel, they should buy more!"
It seems that Chrono Trigger, for now, has been relogated to remake limbo, destined to be churned out on a new format by Square Enix every five years or so. Chrono Trigger fans will be waiting a long time to get their followup game, it seems. That'll teach them for not buying fifteen copies every time the game was released.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
CT's long overdue of a sequal. Cross was so left open....
and TWEWY was more than popular...but who's fault was it that the game was so hard to find even upon release?
Stop selling your DS games for $40 and maybe I would.
Either way, the bastard should get Chrono Cross on DS too, amirite? Amirite?
I refuse to buy the rest of the garbage S-E keeps churning out. There used to be a time where I didn't have to question games purchased under the Squaresoft banner; those days are sadly gone.
Also, you can't include the PS1 remake in your considerations, because that sucked shit. Much like the Final Fantasy Anthology.
If they were to make an excellent true sequel to chrono trigger I would buy it definitely. SQUARE you hear me??? I would buy it.
On a related note if they could somehow find it in their powers to make a true xenogears sequel as well, I would so buy that, omfg I think I would shed tears of pure joy.
@Microwavefood
good luck on that. Monolith was supposed to finish the Xeno series but that broke apart before finishing it completely.
The story ended. Is Lavos being revived? Another bad guy? Another lavos coming to earth?
A Chrono Trigger sequel could work very well based on the time travel mechanic alone. It certainly would be more interesting than Cloud's balls finally droping.
Along with that, between the DS and SNES and PSX versions, the game has sold over 3 million copies. 3 MILLION. Is that not a proper reception? Or does Square consider that a failure for them?
Even so, there's part of me that says that sequels shouldn't just be about how well the original game sold, and more about wanting to improving on the design without copying it exactly. But if your first game didn't sell very well, then it makes sense not to risk a sequel.
But this is Square Enix now, they have the money (the gall?) to announce a numerical sequel (admittedly a MMO) to a game that they haven't even finished yet. It's depressing how most companies can't even stay afloat in our economy if their last game wasn't a hit (Free Radical!), yet here's a company that can roll out the red carpet for game after game without worrying about their fiscal success.
All this, and they're asking us to buy more copies of Chrono Trigger to prove we want a sequel. I'm sorry, but no. I won't. I love Chrono Trigger, but I'm not going to pad Square Enix's pockets so they can rake in the cash for something they aren't even passionate about doing. Suda 51 wanted to make a No More Heroes sequel so badly I'm fairly certain he had started before he knew the game sold 500k worldwide. That's the kind of passion that should drive a sequel.
But you know what, I don't even really want a Chrono Trigger sequel (Cross??). I mean, the first game is good enough for me. I'm done.
actually, Cross left the series very wide open.
It ended on a good note for the most part, but what about Magus? He was still trying to find his sister Schala at the end, the follow up could involve something about that.
Anyway, I call bullshit on his excuse. I know Chrono Trigger sold very well, Chrono Cross did very well, and I'm pretty sure even Chrono Trigger DS did very well considering it was an over priced port with a few extra slapped on.
Honestly, that kind of talk is rather lame. For a game that's seen two rereleases (and both enhanced ports) and a sequel that has varied reception, the Chrono series is kinda unloved in Square's portfolio.
That, and what he's asking for given what happened to Chrono Resurrection and Crimson Echoes is just swell. Yeah, tout copyright infringement all you want, but talk about one way to really sour your fans. What, is Square gonna start cracking down on all of the Cloud fanart all over the Internet? *rolleyes*
OH FUCKING CHRIST WHAT THEY'RE DOING DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH WHAT I WANT THEM TO DO, FUCK THEM THOSE GREEDY CUNTS WHO ARE NOW RUINING THE INDUSTRY WHAT FUCKING DICKBAGS!
Sorry, I forgot we can't ever be content or happy with anything anymore.
What the fuck did you do with that $80 I paid? You sure as shit better not have spent it on FFVIII. If you did, we're having words Square.
Prick. Give us our fucking sequel. And grab Bushido Blade 3 while you're at it.
I'll always be too naive I think.
You know, Square-Enix should take a tip from Capcom. Say what you want about the quality of their franchise revivals (Bionic Commando, Street Fighter IV=:( SSFIITHDR, Megaman 9, Rearmed=:) but at least they are either remaking games in their franchises or making new ones. There is effort there. Not just straight money-grubbing.
Anyway, Cross was a great game, but totally different from Trigger (which was intentional and important). As a result, it's extremely polarizing. If CT gets another sequel, it needs to be old-school style (which is ironic, considering that Cross was totally turn based, making it technically more old-school than Trigger. Sort of.).
I call shenanigans on this guy's sales numbers, too. Trigger originally sold about 2 million copies. Cross sold about 700,000, enough to be a Greatest Hits title. Chrono Trigger on DS is nearing 1 million copies after 27 weeks, far better than Final Fantasy IV did in the same time.
They're selling pretty damn well, but Square apparently wants it to be like fuckin' Dragon Quest before we get another new title.
My memories of Chrono Trigger are so blissful and nostalgic by this point that I doubt a continuation of the story could satisfy. It's worth noting too that the original guys behind CT were a dream team in every sense of the phrase, so I'd be pretty surprised if Square Enix could produce a similar quality of work.
In other news, *dear god* I sound jaded.
And yes, I know the game came out in Europe this year for the DS. But it was during the SNES era that it was commercially popular.
reruns made a funny in my head.
I have the PS1 and DS port. more than enough if we're not gonna get a true sequel. Especially if they keep having time to whore out FFVII nonsense.
