This is tough.
If I was interested in the melee/caster hybrid style of a Retribution Paladin or Enhancement Shaman, is there a SW:TOR class to scratch that itch?
Do you think this will be a legitimate contender against WoW? Or will it be another game that people play for a couple of months, but then eventually go back to WoW?
I think it could be a contender for sure, but it has a way to go to match the content of WoW. So I wouldn't be surprised if some turn back to WoW after a bit and wait until expansions come out for ToR.
Also, quite a few people I talked to on the beta mentioned that ToR was only here to tide them over until GW2.
I for one am really looking forward to playing ToR again, and really don't plan on hopping back to WoW.
Probably a Jedi Consular or a Sith Inquisitor. Both use lightsabers, but both are very Force based. From what I've seen, the Jedi Consular > Sage sounds a lot like a Shaman, with a combination of melee, healing, and Force powers.
Keep in mind that there is more diversity than in WoW, with two advanced classes for each base class, and three skill trees for each advanced class. For instance, with a Bounty Hunter I could be a DPS, a tank, or even a healer, depending on which choices I made. You can probably make most classes fill most roles. You just have to do some research first, since you can't undo your advanced class choice.
I was a shaman in wow that focused on my ranged, playing an Inquisitor/Sorcerer I felt at home focusing on my lighting spells and healing more so than in your face combat. Enhancement Shaman would lean more towards the alternate class of Shadow or Assassin in my opinion.
HURRY UP 12/15!
Pretty much what CynYo said. In the short-term, I know that SWTOR will have a huge playerbase IF ONLY because of the name. People love Star Wars. People love the KOTOR games. As it stands now though, I can't say for sure how long this game will survive. It really depends on how frequently content is added and what that content is.
All I know is that it BETTER have some great end-game content.
If you're looking for the ret pally/enh shaman feel, I'm not sure there is going to be a good thing to tell you to just go to. I would agree with most people that the Assassin/Shadow is probably the first place you want to try. Then again I found myself liking Marauder and I HATED arms/fury war in WoW. I would definitely just say to give everything a try in this. There is CONSIDERABLY less melee dps in this game though.
The game seems very similar to WoW yet I don't get a parallel to draw when I think about how the rotations felt when I played it. Just try everything. :D
But yeah, totally, I'll try everything out. I'm sure I'll have one of each class at around level 10 or so before I really commit to a main.
If TOR can deliver end-game content to keep hardcore players there after everyone reaches max level ~6 months - maybe. You're going to see a surge of people leave WoW (they leave when every game comes out then come back - ie Rift), but when the next WoW expansion comes out, they'll probably come out on top again.
