Walmart thinks it's going to be selling a MAG sequel photo

According a Walmart.com listing, the big box retailer is willing and ready to take you cash for the sequel to Zipper Interactive's ambitious PlayStation 3 shooter, MAG.

A listing has popped up online for MAG 2, with no release date or real information beyond the size of the game's box and its weight. Very useful. Of course, Sony has yet to announce the sequel, but had recently revealed that the original game would be getting PlayStation Move support. Zipper is known to be currently working on the upcoming SOCOM 4.

Sony has suggested that it would be revealing more games before the year's end, including a handful of exclusives. One can guess that a few of those may pop up at Tokyo Game Show next week, but Japan seems like a pretty odd place to reveal a primarily online first-person military shooter.

I doubt that MAG will be getting a sequel, and if it were it's way too early. They can just keep adding stuff to that game (no need for a sequel).

Wow. Crazy if true. Crazy awesome, actually. MAG has a lot of potential. The problem with the game is that outside of the high player count, the gameplay felt dull at times.

If they scaled back player count by half and doubled the number of maps with some more modes while making...IDK...a class system?

Anyway, I'll believe this when I hear something official. Seems just a little too early, but Walmart is a big company so they have to know something to be putting it up.

Good game yes but not good enough to warrant a squeal. But like Drakengard said it does feel a bit empty. Does need more.

I'd be interested in a new MAG. However, it would need be more than a standard shooter with MOAR PLAYERZ. The concept was cool, but the execution was boiler plate.

I would have thought the player population of mag (1) would be low enough after the post release rush that it wouldn't be profitable to try again.

Yall know how I feel about MAG, I LOVE that shit. 200+ hours and still going strong.

They're running the MAG beta system at the moment, which looks to be the same MAG with many changes, so I really doubt they would drop a sequel any time soon.... unless the beta is actually for MAG2???

Hmmm.

Misc notes to yall....

1) Dull? Really? I've never had a "dull" moment in my many hours of MAG playing, with sooooo much going on and soooo many enemies all over the place and all the changing objectives and such i would not use the word "dull" to describe MAG myself.

2) Same goes for "empty" - WTF? The most ram-packed-with-players game on the market, empty? i want what you're smoking dude.

3) Class system - MAG has a user defined class system, you advance and upgrade your charachter's skills and weapons like an RPG with skill trees, it's got the best class sytem I've ever used in a shooter - not this rank = this gun or this gun is only for this class, you want to be a medic with a sniper rifle - go for it, you want to be a rapid assaulter with some engineer skills, go for it, you want pure assault rifles, do that. Grow whatever class or combo of classes that you want.

Really don't know what MAG you guiz were playing????

My only problem is that now the Beta system is running, i like playing with the new stuff in the beta, but knowing that it's not permanent progress puts me off, and playing the normal game feels lacking next to the beta, so I'm kinda stuck now deciding which to play!

"The most ram-packed-with-players game on the market"

I think you are mistaking you're opinion for fact.

When it takes half an hour to fill a lobby up its pretty obvious the population has taken a hit after the "lolwow 250 players" feeling has worn off.

over 500 hours and counting on MAG... and as Sexual Chocolate mentioned, they are currently doing a beta test of the game with a lot of changes. I have to say that I don't really like the new direction - I like the "technicalities" of the beta (the new gun/skill systems and the clan deploy ability) but I don't like the newer game types which are stepping away from the need to work with the squad/platoon to get a win. They need to go back to the roots of having leadership and working with your squad - one of the few games to do this successfully.
... I think that MAG 2 is a long way off... though with all the changes to the original game, I guess it's possible that they might sell MAG 1.5 on disc rather than the existing MAG.

@Bakes - The GAMES are packed with players, not the lobby - stop being a douche.

Also, I don't think I've ever waited half an hour for a queue to fill up, like 10 mins max, if your queue is running low, play a different gametype! But you can't expect any game to rustle up and 256 players for a game in seconds.

Gamers - they expect the moon on a stick and magical interweb abilities.

Sure if you're the 256th person to enter you've got no wait, but for every 256th person there is a 1st person who's had to wait for the rest.

To be honest, once you're mature enough to understand that this many players is going to require some organization and that cannot be done in an instant, it's pretty obvious that the queue system, netcode and general setup of MAG is fucking fantastic.

I think that's what Zipper meant by "the 360 userbase is too immature for MAG" is that they would simply look and go, "what, I'm not waiting 5 minutes for a fucking match! I'm going to go play round after round after round after pointless fucking 10 minute round of CoD instead!"

5 minute wait is worth it for a 30 minute match with 255 other players, well well well worth it. Chat with your party, smoke a ciggy, get a drink whatever, just man the fuck up.

I'm not arguing with you today dude I'm just saying that 20-30 minutes is too long to be waiting for a game. If the population is as high as you suggest this wouldn't be an issue for the people I know playing the game.

Questioning my maturity won't detract from the point I'm making but it was a valiant attempt anyway.

@Bakes - As I say, i've never waited 20-30 minutes for a game. Never, ever. It's 5 to a maximum of 10 minutes, in fact, if you wait too long they throw you into an active game with space!!

if the Domination (256 player) queue is slow, go play a quick sabotage (32 player) round - they start almost instantly - and then come back to the domination match.

Although, saying that, i often play only domination and very rarely wait longer than 5 mins.

5 mins for a 30 min match is fine by me.

@Bakewell... I have to agree with sexual that if you're waiting 20 or 30 minutes for a game then you're simply in the wrong queue (likely Interdiction). Most queue's are 5 or 10 minutes max and after you get in one game if you deploy again right away you can usually hit a cycle of no waiting times at all.

Our group isn't usually that organized, but we actually like the break time in between games as we socialize and people grab a drink, food, cigarette... whatever (all while staying on mic - I love the range on those bluetooth mics! LOL!)

@Patriot Snake... no, and neither is the new mode Escalation (which will probably be free). Just wait. I suspect that this MAG 2.0 will likely be a greatest hits thing which will bundle all the new updates and the two new modes... at that point they may offer the new modes for free or at a ridiculously low rate to people who already own the game.

@SexualChocolate:
Spin it how you want but MAG died an early death specifically because its player base fell apart. Unless you play at primetime and are willing to play the decidedly NON massive player count Sabotage mode MAG is UNUPLAYABLE due to queue times.

You can stick your head in the sand and pretend everything is okay and wait in queues all day for all anyone else cares but, fact is you're in denial. MAG was a hugely BOTCHED wad of potential like no other game I've ever seen that's why it's so frustrating that the dev screwed the pooch so freaking badly. If the concept had completely sucked it wouldn't have been so tragic.

I mean why do you think they're having a huge beta right now to try to reboot the thing for F*ck's sake? Because they (heart) you? No, because they boned this game so badly.

This walmart thing is probably just going to be a new productized version of what they're beta-ing right now. Repackaging it along with new features and Move support and calling it "2" might drum up enough interest to get their servers filled up again without the development cost for a full, proper, sequel.

@Patriot Snake... are you in the Raven Dtoid clan? If not, it might be worth spending the money on a new character slot so that you can join us (or vet over to Raven). We usually make up at least half or all of a squad on most any night (except Wednesdays when some of us play Warhawk). You're right that it's more fun with a group that works together. Send me a PSN note (to Elsa) if you want a clan invite for Raven.

Dude I NEED what you're smoking. Like right now!

The daily mag dtoid clan would have something to say about mag being unplayable. I mean, what the fuck are you on? I played nothing but mag for about a month recently, all times of day and night and I played 90% domination (256 player) and never had to wait longer than it took to smoke a ciggy.

Dude, you crazy.

Yeah... Sequel is not cool. I appreciate that they're working on it more and I'll continue playing, but I'm not ready to plop down money on a sequel to a game I've only just started playing. Though I have spent a half hour in a queue before, but only at about 3 or 4 am on a thursday night...

@Elsa, ooh! I want one! I'ma join up so I can play with some Ravens!

Sorry, man, but I'm not buying your BS. I played MAG enough to know that the game is just dull. The maps are not interesting. The vehicles control like crap. The objectives are dull. Maps are unbalanced [or were, I think they fixed this, actually]. The shooting mechanics feel average. The guns don't feel like they have any power.

Toss in that playing the same maps on the same modes every damn time is just BORING. Every map should be available to every mode, or they really need to come up with a better map creation system because having literally six maps for each mode wasn't enough. But again, none of them were exactly interesting to play on either so that doesn't help much.

It really is a shame though as MAG had a lot of potential. But it just failed in so many ways. I do hope they try again, but they really need to re-think how they designed this game.

Look, mag isn't "the perfect game" but it's a fucktonne of fun and there is a list as long as my arm of worse games.

I love it and will buy a sequel.

Maps have multiple sides, so each of those 6 maps (there's actually 9 + interdiction 3 + the 3 suppression maps) has between 2 and 8 areas of play.

the entry level guns are weak, sure but better guns are better.

Despite acknowledging that it's not perfect, it's my personal number one game so far.

That's all you're getting from me, have a great weekend Destructoid, catch some of you in the unplayable mag later.

Sexualchocolate out.

Is there a Dtoid SVER clan? Vetted back to them the other day and really don't have any urge to play in Raven anytime soon...

Anyway, about the only game types I've had long waits for are Interdiction (we all know why - not enough people coughing up the $) and Acquisition. Sabotage & the big one, Domination, rarely have more than a few minutes wait (and I'm on the other side of the world from most of you).

If you have a PS3 and haven't checked it out, it's well worth it.

Every time Dtoid write a MAG related article you get these same people lodging the same complaints against the game and I have no idea how they have convinced themselves of such positions. As SC said, MAG is far from perfect. There are a rake of things you could raise against it. However, none of them feature in these comment sections.
