Walmart price cuts spanked GameStop's stock? photo

Maybe. As you might have heard, Walmart cut prices on many of the hottest games and systems for this holiday season, putting the heat on all of its competition and showing that they are serious about selling you games.

GameStop stock fell over 8 percent, and Bloomberg says that they might have to drop their prices to match Walmart's to stay competitive. An analyst from Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, Tony Scott, says that GameStop has always benefited from Walmart's foot traffic. But now that the prices are lower at Walmart, there's no need to go next door.

GameStop's response to all of this?

We believe consumers will always rely on GameStop for the best values, the broadest selection, unparalleled product availability and knowledgeable game advisors they can count on.

Oh. So you're not going to cut your prices? Good luck with that.

I personally can't count on GameStop to offer any of that crap they just mentioned.

Always the highest prices. Never the best selection. Always the DUMBEST personel. And they don't even deliver to my door/mailbox as Amazon does.

Wow, I wasn't even really impressed by Wal-marts reduced prices. Who the fuck would buy them at even higher prices at gamestop?

A quality of advisors doesn't justify a 10$ difference.

$5 less than msrp for used games and "new" games that they take out of the case and put into scratchy paper sleeves is not a good value.

Seriously, who shops at gamestop anymore?

And, the only people I've ever seen working at Gamestop is "bro's" who only play madden or women who know nothing about games. On occasion you find a few people that know what they are talking about, but rarely.

People are funny. Gamestop doesn't make much off of new game sales. This is the retail investor not understanding the business model very well.

Sorry Gamestop, but product availability? my ass. Twice I've pre-ordered games that were out of stock on release day, both times I went to walmart across the street and picked up the game, no problem. Tell you what gamestop, why don't you keep my ten bucks and buy yourself some walmart stock.

"knowledgeable game adisors"? Really?

Are these guys playing MW2 in the back when I come in?

I understand some of the complaints, but seriously, who gives a fuck if they open the case. Hell, it might even work to your benefit if you're trying to get your money back on a new game. If they took the shrink wrap off themselves, they can't prove you opened it.

I really like my Gamestop. You guys can complain all you want but you know you're still going to cash in on their preorder bonuses.

..Knowledgeable Game Advisors?

Last I checked, most Gamestops round here hire based on knowledge of when Madden comes out or how to suggestive sell a ps3, not knowledge of videogame systems

Fuck Gamestop, their 'advisors' are usually twats who will criticize your choice in games, mock your console of choice, and are just generally unsociable.

So it's pretty much the internet in store form.

Gamestop. Walmart.
Walmart. Gamestop.

Who cares? People who are loyal to a certain store will go there regardless and people who hunt for lower prices will get better deals from the comfort of their own home+internet.

"knowledgeable game advisors"

Heh... GS near me, I got to watch with amusement at one of their advisors trying to explain Bioshock to a customer: "It's uhmm... well, you're in this underwater city.. and you collect these atoms from things that look like girls... and uh... it's a really cool game."

sadly, I wish I had only made up that ridiculous dialogue...

Electrium: They put stickers over the opening. Its not a new game if they opened it. Its a display copy which should be lowered in value.

Also, Bestbuy has exclusives as well, in addition to getting points for $$$ off coupons if you spend enough.

All gamestop gives you are stupid looks.

Everybody at Gamestop has always harassed me about something when I bought games. If I didn't have an edge card, they try to get me to buy one. If I do have one, they try to get me to renew or pre-order some game that usually isn't even for the system I'm buying a game for. I seriously do not ever want to shop there again, but it is the only place currently to buy used plastic instruments locally for me, so...blah!
Yeah. I hate those stores. Usually only moms with annoying swearing children, frat boys, and people who come in, play the demos, and leave.

Every time I'm almost gonna shop GameStop Amazon has it a few bucks cheaper without shipping cost.

Maybe if GS did something similar to what Wal-Mart does fir new DVDs and offer new releases at a disount for a week (say $55 instead of the $65) or even just on launch day that could put those people like me on board who really do pick Amazon just because of the $3-$5 less on launch day titles.

I've never had any problems shopping in Gamestop on a personal level. Noone has ever dissed my decision, insulted my choices, or anything similar...

Granted (not bragging), a gamestop employee would have to be pretty stupid to try to educate me as it is clear who is ahead in the life race when compared to any of them... So it may just be me... When you pull up in/on a nice ride and wear a watch that is worth more than 3 months of their salary... what are they really going to say?

That aside, I don't agree with some of their practices.. I always get a new unopened copy of a game I buy, and I'd never trade in a game to them for $7 or whatever their average is. I just use them as a convenient place to buy a release... They are just right around the corner and I'd have to go over like 3 more speed bumps to get to the Walmart, just makes sense (for me).

I HATE those little paper booklets! That and they cover their games in those stupid stickers that leave greasy sticky chunky residue, both new AND used games are effected.

Only reason I go to EB (Gamestop but in Canada) is to get exclusive artbooks and all that stuff.

Wow I feel sorry for most all of you. The Gamestop where I'm at is excellent. There stock is always waaay more than sufficient, the Advisors are all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If you're in more than a couple times a month you're basically treated like family.

That being said does that justify an extra $10, no probably not. Walmart's attempting to take a lead in sales by losing profit. It's a scary business model, but with all the other garbage they have in the store they're likely to keep UPT's up high enough to even out the loss. Sadly if Gamestop matches the prices it equates a hands down loss for them. I can't imagine it's an easy choice to make.

And as for the shelf copies of the games being taken out and sleeved; if you don't like it don't buy it. I personally won't, as I like my new games completely new. They do it because of theft, and it's a damn good reason to do it.

Whoo Gamestop hate~ But anyways I find it funny that Gamestop isn't going to be discounting anything, but then again we have a ton of discounts through the 6th for things like L4D 2 still going on, but I know for sure they'll do something since when customers ask for the prices, they assume Walmart will have it lower (in this case it will) or are even surprised to see it that we "have the same price as Walmart!"

lol @knowledgeable game advisors... They're always trying to sell me Barbie Pony Adventures type games because I have boobs, and tend to be surlier than your average DMV employee. And heaven forbid you try to commit the ultimate crime of buying a new game THAT YOU DID NOT PREORDER ZOMG.

I could overlook their overpriced games for the novel experience of buying a game in a store instead of online, but it's the employees that have made me not want to spend another dime in their stores.

I've been flat out lied to by gamestop employees a few times but I think the worst was when I went to go buy animal crossing for DS. I picked up a copy on the shelf that said new and they tried to hand me a straight up used copy for the new price. Not even the display copy, this had no manual and it didn't even have the animal crossing box, just the one they use for pre-owned games.

When I said I didn't want it they told me good luck finding it somewhere else because it was such an old game. I went right across the mall to best buy and bought it for 5 dollars less than gamestop brand new. Why bother getting something from a specialty store when I can get it cheaper and without being lied to at a place like best buy or walmart?

@ JDigital: I'm glad to hear that being the assistant manager at Wendy's pays so well.

The Gamestop I go to is employed by nice people who enjoy talking video games and a variety of other topics. I can usually find what I'm looking for, even the rare older ps2 games I am collecting now. I like giving them my business when I'm inclined to but I go where the best deal is.

Now, the other four Gamestops in the surrounding area are a mixed bag of pleasant people and giant fucking cunts. Not surprising as that's the nature of retail.

My gamestops are pretty well employed here. I once actually got into a good videogame conversation with a female employee for about 30 minutes. (we were the only ones in the store) She also gives advise as to what games I should or shouldn't buy. Where I am (Miami) they do treat you like family if you appear often. But some of their prices are ridiculous. Like $25 for a used New super mario bros. DS and $30 for a new one... I also had a bad experience with an employee who obviously knew nothing about games. I asked him for Metroid Prime Hunters (This is august 2009 so they stopped making new copies for a while) he said he had it, spent about 10 minutes shuffling through the drawers and ended up giving me the demo abd insisted it was the full game... It's ESRB rating was "RP"

you fucking dogshit chink walmart supporter. In what world would it make any sense for a company that JUST sells video games to sell games below cost??? Walmart doesn't care and makes it up on other items in the store. I dispise anyone who would support economy destroying walmart.
And good luck talking to some blue haired lady about the games or helping you with anything. People I know at gamestop are great and have helped me not buy a POS game many times or if I need something new they always have ideas based on what I like. I'll just keep going to the independant store at the mall who keeps selling me games before street date just because he's a cool dude and likes my business.

I can't go to EB (Canadian GameStop) since I'm banned from the one nearby and don't have a car and the staff are usually... fucking annoying... I can't shop at Wal-Mart because the electronics department is always staffed by this little old lady who seems to shit her pants in fear every time I ask to see a game or some "special needs" person who responds to my questions by either drooling or walking into things.

The more "able" staff are usually too busy to give me the time of day, much less open the damn case for video games. So fuck it, I'm going independant retailers for anything that can't be bought online.

Unless you're looking for an old game or planning on buying used, who likes shopping at gamestop? Best Buy is the best retailer for games since they have lots of deals, and try your luck at target since they have alot of clearance on sale. Gamestop is just trying to capitalized on the kids support (since they don't bother where or how much the games cost). GameStop barely put out sales on New Games.

Good Luck with that GameStop.

Sux that so many Gamestops are faptastic. The one down the street from me at least has the good staffing, and a very wide selection of games (try getting anything older than 6months at walmart), I agree the used games system is a scam but occasionally you find a used classic game on sale for $5. Otherwise, wherever is the best deal is where I do my business in the end.
