Waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3? Prepare to wait a lot longer photo

In a recent interview with Ultimania (helpfully translated by the folks over at Kingdom Hearts Insider), Director Tetsuya Nomura stated that he has multiple ideas for the next Kingdom Hearts game, and that it's likely that the next game he starts working on won't be the hotly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 3. While discussing the upcoming Birth by Sleep and its connections to the original Kingdom Hearts (as Birth by Sleep takes place before the original game), Nomura stated that BbS would contain a lot of unanswered questions. When asked if Kingdom Hearts 3 would be the game that bridged Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts, he responded as follows.

Who knows? I already have ideas for the next installment. But since Birth by Sleep isn’t even out yet, I don’t have to think about it until awhile from now. Recently everyone kepts asking me when I’m planning on coming out with KH3. Even though I’m currently busy with Final Fantasy Versus XIII, I’m also thinking that it’s almost time to start thinking about it seriously. Though it’s entirely possible that the next game in the series won’t be KH3

While I don't think this necessarily means that the game hasn't been started at ALL, it's definitely a sign that fans of Kingdom Hearts will be waiting a while before KH3 is finally released, particularly since it sounds like yet another spin-off game is being made first. When asked about what this mystery spinoff game might be, Nomura only said that it would be "more official than a side story" and that it is a "mystery KH". Regardless of which game ends up coming out first, Nomura suggests that both games are not very far along in the development process.

The full interview goes into a lot of detail about Birth by Sleep, coded, and 358/2 Days, so if you're interested in Kingdom Hearts it's definitely worth reading.

Does this 'mystery Kingdom Hearts' sound appealing to you, or are you ready for them to stop messing around with spinoffs and finally make a true sequel?

I'm ready for them to add a second fucking button into the combat system. No more pressing X over and fucking over.

i thought developers these days tries to avoid direct numbering to their franchise titles, so 'proper' numbering i think would be a thing in the past... maybe, evidently MGS: Peace Walker in PSP to Kojima is essentially MGS 5.

so yeah... i won't hold my breath to 'proper' KH3

I can see the appeal of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but it's just never rubbed off on me. Perhaps the higher ratio of Disney versus Square-Enix is the cause. I was hoping to see a few FF-themed worlds, but that hasn't been the case so far. If they could get away from rehashing the first game as they did with the sequels (unsure if Birth by Sleep counts), I might give a chance to this overly-convoluted story. Likely not. I'll let my roommate fanboi all over this while I play something more substantial.

Okay, I was quite happy when Sephiroth came out in the first Kingdom Hearts and owned my roommate in about five seconds. It made my week.

Possibly the worst game series ever created.

I couldve sworn this was their first priority to begin with. All these years....

With all these spinoffs, they make it seem like they're gonna answer the questions first, then conclude it in KH3.

I can't imagine why anyone would be anxious for a KH3 when there are TWO games in the series coming out within the next year. Who cares if it isn't numbered? 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep are still full games. I don't get why fans are being so greedy.

I don't know, It's kind of odd having the Disney characters acting so seriously, so grimdark. I would like it it the Disney characters had their own game so more time can be focused on them.

i just had a whole rant written out about how there's no way a kingdom hearts III (even if it isn't called that) isn't coming out, especially considering the effort that was put into the secret trailer at the end of KHII. I just rewatched that on youtube so that I can link it here, when I realized that it actually said "Birth by Sleep" right before the trailer began, aka my point is moot... now that i realize this, i really really really hope they release this for the PS3 or PS2 as well... i really don't want a game with a trailer that looks as awesome as this to go only portable :(

Monster w21 Faces: Nah, Lost Odyssey, Halo, Mass Effect, Prototype and Fallout are some of the worst game series to exist. Yes, I just trolled your gamercard.

For real, though, I like Kingdom Hearts. The fact that he's trying to make spinoffs with angstier protagonists annoys me though. It's Disney, dammit.

I'm not surprised. The moment Tetsuya Nomura announced that he was heading up the Final Fantasy XIII "Fabula Nova Crystalis" project, I knew that he'd have a lot on his plate that wouldn't get done any time soon. I'm fairly certain that the sheer number of spin-offs planned were partly being made to keep Disney happy about such a profitable, critically successful series being continued (in addition to being harmonious with SquareEnix's series expansion strategies).

Still, without playing Birth by Sleep, I don't see the need for a game to bridge BbS and KH1. BbS happening before KH1 should hopefully answer enough questions, and 358/2 Days should fill in the rest. I'd assume any lingering plot threads would continue in Coded, since that is the first game planned to happen after KH2, and from there, that should lead into KH3. Honestly, I'm not sure where they can take the story, but in retrospect, I thought that KH1 ended fairly conclusively (besides the open ending, I thought all the questions were answered), but KH2 provided answers to so many questions I didn't even realize were in KH1 until they were presented to me.

Long story short: I'm eager for more games, but I can wait for KH3 without any problem.

@ EternalDeathSlayer

It's called "triangle" for reaction commands, hitting R2 to bring up magic command shortcuts, and "square" for guarding and parrying attacks. Those were all in KH2. (Even if magic was far less useful compared to KH1...)

@thisissami: Have you played Crisis Core? MGS: Portable Ops? Daxter?

The PSP is more than capable of making PS2 quality games, and Birth by Sleep is in no way any less of an official sequel just because it is portable.

Till this day, I still think KH has the best realtime battling system in an RPG, more than Star Ocean and the Tales series. Square should capitalize on that combat system and try a new something new with it.

the notion that the sequel counts if it is only in home consoles is rather shallow isn't it?
EternalDeathSlayer's Avatar

@ Necros: Yeah, but all you needed was to press the x button unless you played on the hardest difficulty. Triangle was also somewhat useful, at least on enemies that sort of required it.

But that's not a 2 button combo system, it's a context sensitive button pressing bonanza.

Either way, the combat was sort of stale, and I agree that magic was far more useful in the first game. I'd prefer a return to that type of game, not the dumbed down shit they gave us with KH2.

How is KH2 dumbed down version of the first game at all? It introduces like 30 things into the combat. Only thing missing is more combo variety and more magic, the first game didn't really have that.

More on topic, Versus 13 is pretty much gameplay wise what KH3 is imagined to be. I hope that comes out nicely, sadly we wont see it for at least a year.

KH2>KH1.

You just have to start KH2 on the highest difficulty available (proud), otherwise they made it WAY too easy in comparison to KH1. Why is it better? One word: Tron.

I may be one of the few people in the world who thought that KH was an all right series. I can still buy 2 for dirt cheap, but I haven't beaten the first and I haven't gone back to play it for over two years now.

@phantomile

oh I don't doubt that it isn't going to be good, I just meant that I don't own a PSP and would therefore personally like it to be on a system that I have.

KH2 may be the better playing game in most aspects, but seriously, the story was awful compared to the much more solid offering of the first one. My biggest complaint about the second one was that they didn't use the disney locations nearly as well. Most of the charm about the first one was seeing how Sora would come into the new world and effect the people and plot around him. But the second one seemed to be much more lazy about it and the worlds were just backdrops for the much less interesting Organization XIII.

Yeah, Tron made KH2 instantly 50 time better.

That doesn't mean KH2 sucked before Tron, I'm just saying, Tron has power.

I don't mind - I'm much more anxious to get my hands on FF Versus XIII than Kingdom Hearts. The first game was excellent with enjoyable mechanics, but I'm really not a fan of Disney. I couldn't stand playing for longer than an hour at a time.

Considering that FFV:XIII is taking up Mr. Nomura-san's time is great news to me, as I know almost nothing about that title. I guess this is something, right?
