Wait, WTF is this about a Shadow of the Colossus movie? photo

A few stories around the Internet today are reporting that Columbia Pictures are in the early stages of bringing Sony's PlayStation 2 classic Shadow of the Colossus to the big screen. Yeah, that's right. You just read that.

The reports have Kevin Misher (Public Enemies) on board to produce, and young Hollywood writer Justin Marks to write the script. Does the name Justin Marks sounds familiar? He's the guy who wrote Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Yup.

Look, don't shoot the messenger, guys. I can't confirm whether or not this information is accurate, and in any case, Hollywood deals are a fickle thing. If this indeed true, it's entirely possible a Shadow of the Colossus film (and I'll repeat, written by the guy who wrote Legend of Chun-Li) may never actually happen. (It should be noted that Marks apparently also wrote a killer screenplay -- something I can't vouch for first hand -- for a Masters of the Universe film that has yet to pan out.)

But let's take a moment to think about what it would be like if it did.

[Update: Variety's Ben Fritz -- a friend of screenwriter Justin Marks -- has confirmed this news with some additional information.

"I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film," Fritz writes. "And despite the game's somewhat 'artsy' cred, they're hoping 'Shadow' will be 'Lord of the Rings'-size fantasy tentpole."]

Jesus Christ. I can't even think about how they will translate this into a movie. The entire idea of just killing huge bosses with little dialogue doesn't work well with a lot of people.

But as long as it isnt as bad as In the name of the King.

I can't see this being good at all. To stay true to the original it would need a $200 million budget and have about 4 lines of dialogue. If they made that I'd be pretty into it actually.

Well Cast Away had minimal dialogue for a good chunk of it...
But that attracted viewers because it had Tom Hanks...

As for the amount of CGI in movie? It'd be huge...
Hopefully the choreography will be good...

I'm curious as to whether the writer is going to follow the games faithfully down to the method of killing each colossi, or if he is going to create some new ones with a more creative way of killing them...

How boring would a movie be to watch the Wanderer fell each of the colossi that we all know how to take down already?

Seriously? I don't think this is such a good idea. I mean the first time the hero does spend half and hour climbing the first colossi before killing it, might be epic and cool. but the repeating the same steps on the rest of the colossues doing the same thing would probably be boring for the audience.

Well ... I suppose it could work. Shadow is compelling because you kill all of these beautiful creatures without really knowing why; you develop a relationship with Agro (although part of that relationship is built through interaction). I think it's critical that they keep the minimalist dialogue/story and really highlight how beautiful and majestic the colossi are, to the detriment of Wander, of course.

worst idea ever.

like, I could grasp if maybe they somehow stretched it to be a 3 part movie, and had him kill 4 or so colossus per.

That, I could deal with, but the crew behind this just makes me sick. Why not Del Toro? He'd be perfect, that man knows how to bring stuff to life, and is an avid fan of the game.

I'd imagine del Toro wouldn't get in on this because he actually has sense!

What goes on with the player interaction and all that stuff in Shadow of the Colossus, you really cannot replicate on film. Only people that would jump aboard are your common, bog-standard idiots...

Woop for humanity!

I can possibly see this work if the movie was treated as a indie film not a big budget one and make it as long as 30-45 minutes, remember length doesn't mean quality.

This would never work. On the plus side, if this gets released, we may never have to see another videogame adaptation ever. Keep your games out of my movies, and your movies out of my games. They're not like books, which are often better than their movie counterparts anyway.

This could be the greatest film ever... if you know everything was different. It'd need the backing of a studio willing to pour hundreds of millions into a niche art film.

So should we assume a sassy sidekick alongside our hero as he runs from his pursuers on a quest of revenge the great colossus he believes responsible for his sisters death (gotta be sister so he can make out with sassy sidekick(tm))?

If they could do it completely without dialog, or just dialog in a jibberish language that you can't understand... it would be epic. It could be done easily since the story caters well to this. Wall-e had no dialog in the first half of the movie, and you could understand 100% of it.
