Wah wah wah Left 4 Dead 2! photo

So, Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out, and people aren't happy. This is to be expected, since gamers tend to be entitled, spoiled, and miserable with anything and everything. Arguably the best co-op shooter in years gets a sequel, and people complain. That's the games industry for you.

Having wandered around the E3 showfloor and played the game myself, I've heard a number of complaints about the game. About how Valve is selling out, how the original Left 4 Dead won't get supported, and how it's simply too soon for a sequel. These people really should STFUAJPG. Seriously.

Read on as we discuss the BAAAAW'ing over Left 4 Dead 2.

I think it's incredibly ironic that Valve, the company famed for taking ten years to complete a sequel, is now being criticized for finally getting a sequel out in a timely fashion. Valve has taken so much shit over the years for its lengthy development time, especially over Left 4 Dead itself, and when it decides to throw something up quick, the community backlash is even worse

Valve, of all companies, has earned the right to milk at least one franchise, at least once. The studio has taken years upon years to develop some of the best games in the world, and if it wants to try and shorten its development cycle and see if it can provide the same quality, I see no reason why we should try and discourage them. Do you seriously not want more Left 4 Dead

Okay, people do want more Left 4 Dead, but they don't want a sequel. Instead, they complain that they aren't being given more shit for the original game. Well, you shouldn't be buying games with the expectation that you're going to have a load of free shit dumped on you from the outset. People knew what they were getting on the disc/file when they purchased the game. They were never told they'd be drowning in DLC after the fact. Valve never promised that, and is under no obligation to provide it. Oh wait, you say Valve did it for its other games? That's because Valve was spoiling you, son!

If it helps you, though, I heard a Valve rep on the show floor saying that Left 4 Dead would still get support, despite the sequel's release. This brings me to the other point: If you love Left 4 Dead so much, by all means keep playing it and just pretend Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't exist. We all know what Valve games are like -- servers will still be full of original L4D players long after the sequel's release, so you can live in Mr. Softee's Imaginary World of Happy for the rest of your natural days, unaffected by the evil sequel.

Another complaint, and one that I can quasi-understand, is that it'll just be more of the same. I played Left 4 Dead 2 this week, and you know what? I agree. There is a new Special Infected in the Charger, and you get special melee weapons, but it's pretty much the same game as before. I'm also bummed that, at the time of writing, there are no alternate character models for the Hunter, Smoker and Boomer.

However, while I agree the game is more of the same, I must add that I don't care at all. The very fact that this Left 4 Dead is set during the daytime is enough to justify its existence, as far as I'm concerned. Zombies are naturally scarier during the day, and the New Orleans settings look distinctly beautiful, in a post-apocalyptic way. Yes, Left 4 Dead 2 plays just like Left 4 Dead, but I couldn't give a shit. It's a great game, with a sexy new coat of paint, and I will swallow that shit with a massive silver spoon. Plus, the Horde member in a Hazmat suit is hoofin' brilliant.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the concern. It's surprisingly quick, especially for Valve, and with Electronic Arts casting an increasingly strong shadow over the studio, it's not hard to imagine Valve falling into the Activision trap of releasing endless sequels and spin-offs for the co-op zombie shooter. However, we are not yet at that point, and I believe it's probably wise to save up the bitching and whining until we arrive at such a stage.

Valve has the makings of a killer franchise on its hands, and I believe it deserves the chance to "sell out" at least a little bit, for once. If you had a hot property like Left 4 Dead and you knew that people would lap it up, would you not want to make more, and do so while things are still hot? Of course you would. Many of you still lap up every single Zelda game, despite them following the same format, and most of you lose your shit over re-released games like Marvel vs. Capcom. Don't pretend you won't lap this up either.

Most of the people complaining will be playing this and loving it when it's released. I'd put down some money on that wager, but I'm saving up for Left 4 Dead 2.

The point is, we were promised content that we never got, and Valve are saying that they're making L4D2 what they wanted L4D1 to be. I don't know about you but effectively paying for a beta, or a demo is stupid.

Not only that, TF2 costs about half of what Left 4 Dead does in the UK on Steam, yet TF2 gets a hell of a lot more content? How does that make any sense?

I dont care if the sequel is bad, if it is then I wont buy it at full price. i will wait for a discount weekend or wait six months...

My first impression with Left4Dead back in november was that I loved it but it needed more support from Valve since it was a full priced game. They gave it some support, not a LOT but some support (I wouldnt have minded a new campaign).

Now my main problem with this sequel is that they are doing it because of the 360, they could bring this as a pay to play DLC on STEAM for 25 bucks or something but they had to deliver a new title for a full price because, I believe, of the 360 users.

Is not a bad step, is just what it is and we have to judge the game, not the timing.

I always bought all Valve games day one and this one is no exception ; people saying about TF2 like level of support should STFU because L4D is more SPish than MPish , and I don't think any game ever will get as much support as TF2...
L4D2 will have all new "skins" for infected ; 3 new special infected ; uncommon common infected (like fire resistant or extra strong ...) ; new "run for your lives" moments ; a new AI capable of not only changing e nemy placement and ammo placement , but daytime , weather , routes ;more zombie movies stereotipes character ;melee weapons;new weapons; 5 maps and all enabled for 4 modes , Suvival,Versus, Campaign and a new mode yet to be anounced ...
I don't how people can bitch about new content ...

I'm fairly certain I'd go out and buy a new L4D game every year if they released it to the same quality each time. This game has almost limitless potential for enviornments, characters, and expansions. And if Valve wants to wring it for every cent its worth, then so be it. EA does that with all their boring sports games anyways, which are essentially the exact same thing, why not give us something amazing like this?

The only possibly complaint I have about this is that it will further push back the development on Half Life 2: Episode 3. Give me that, and then make as many L4D's as you want. Please Valve?

Valve intends to support hotly anticipated zombie survival shooter Left 4 Dead post-release with new characters, new maps, new achievements and new weapons in order to grow the community, Gabe Newell has revealed.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at Leipzig Games Convention, the Valve co-founder and managing director said the developer intended to follow a similar downloadable content policy as it has with Team Fortress 2.

Left 4 Dead, set for release on PC and Xbox 360 on November 21 in Europe, is primarily a four-player cooperative game that sees a group of Survivors battle through four 'Movies' and against 28 Days Later-style zombies called The Infected.

Newell said that Valve's support of the game post-launch will be essential for growing the community.

He said: "One of the things that we're doing is we seem to be in a transition between games as a package product and games more of a service. So if you look at Team Fortress 2, one of things that's really helped grow the community is the continuous updates, where we release new maps, new character classes, new unlockables, new weapons. And we tell the stories about the characters, like the meet the sniper, or meet the sandwich. And that ongoing delivery of content really seems to grow the community.

"So each time we've released one of those for Team Fortress 2 we've seen about a 20% increase in the number of people who are playing online. And that number is really important because it determines how many community created maps there are, how many servers are running, and so on. So we'll do the same thing with Left 4 Dead where we'll have the initial release and then we'll release more movies, more characters, more weapons, unlockables, achievements, because that's the way you continue to grow a community over time."

Boycotters have a point, your article makes you sound more Butthurt than they are Stirling.

L4D Versus without Dead Air/Death Toll lasted me more than 3 months. More than any other online game for a looong time. I just want actual new stuff now, not just more maps blablabla. L4D2 adds enough to make me want to play it and for the time it will last you, it's cheap as hell.

Community created maps and whatnot is great, but it's not like Everyone plays custom stuff in all games. Some people like it, some love it, some don't care for it. I think it's great that at least we have the chance to buy a L4D with a chainsaw set in New Orleans; for me that makes it a must get for that reason alone :)

And by the way - when Valve promised DLC for the original L4D they didn't say how much they were going to make. You might cry foul, but that just teaches you to pay more attention to wording. Valve DID release free DLC. They are under no obligation to release as much as you want. Unless YOU PERSONALLY are an investor in Valve (and you are NOT because it is a PRIVATE company, and thus, no public trading of shares is avaiable), you have no legal rights to jack bugger all from Valve in terms of more DLC.

Once more, because some gamers are REEEAAALLLLLYYY thick - if. you. don't. like. it. then. don't. buy. it.

Very simple. Very, very simple. If you feel that Valve are not offering enough for your dollars, TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE! If enough games don't like what Valve is doing, then Valve will go bankrupt! It's called capitalism, junior. It's really not that much of a brain strain genius.

Way to entirely miss the point, Jim.

I bought Left 4 Dead at full price, despite knowing that it wasn't full of content. I did this because Valve have a reputation of giving the players more content. Gabe Newell even said point blank they'd do this, as it's the best way of expanding and supporting the community, which in a multiplayer game is essential for sales. I would happily have paid for new content too (800pts for an expansion maybe).

Instead of sticking by that promise, they went straight to developing the sequel. This rather annoys me, so when Left 4 Dead 2 is released, I won't be buying it. There are plenty more top quality FPS's being released around then, such as Halo: ODST, MW2, Bioshock 2. At least two of those are likely to see much more content post launch for us, and are actually full games for the price. Left 4 Dead never was.

I agree with you on all points, but when asked point blank, the only thing the L4D representative told me was coming for the original L4D was "one other patch".

No content/weapons. Maybe another survival level and another small mechanic. I think people are bitching because Valve promised extra content, and perhaps characters/weapons, but there have been 0 additions to the campaign so far, and survival was a bit of a letdown. It's like Call of Duty 4's lack of DLC: why make COD5 so soon with only 1 DLC pack out?

I'm with Wardrox. Why reference a godly supported game like TF2?

As usual, the case in #company#'s defense is "they exist to make money", "entitled to do what they want with their franchise", etc.

There's a bunch of protests, boycotts, internet petitions every year for several gaming related things. Like the Shenmue 3 petition. Or bringing Yakuza 3 to the USA petition.

The only petition that actually did anything was one that convinced 2k to include a Big Daddy figurine with Bioshock's special edition. And now I'll be surprised if Bioshock 2 doesn't ship with a Big Sister figurine.

These kinds of fan requests rarely have any effect, and the people defending Valve want to put these guys down because they expected some more for L4D, instead of a sequel?

Let these guys boycott in peace. Valve is just tarninishing it's consumer relationship. If you think like this guy above, that says " Gamers are NOT charity cases who have "rights" other than warranty and tech support", you have no understanding of the consumer-company relationship. It's not just about payment and service. There's trust to be gained, and Valve lost a lot of it by announcing L4D2.

We can TRUST squarenix to keep pumping final fantasy sequels. We can trust Nintendo to give us Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, no matter if they take a bit to release. We can trust team ICO to deliver gorgeous spiritual games. We can trust Microsoft and Bungie to keep doing their Halo gig, even if the trilogy has ended.

These kinds of bonds aren't made because gamers are only entitled Warranty and Tech Support. Gamers tell companies what they want, firstly and foremostly, by BUYING games. And people BOUGHT L4D, and they still buy. And what did Valve do? After using the DLC argument, they scrap it and announce a sequel. The trust formed between the company and the consumer is tainted.

I didn't expect 5 free campaigns, but I expected paid DLC. The engine is great and they would sell a lot. But it's easier to sell things in a box.

"So basically, the article is acknowledging that Valve is whoring out the series with minor changes Madden style, but they deserve to do so because the company has been good to us in the past?

If anything, that's why people are so upset. It's so unValve-like. They have traditionally been one of the few companies to treat its fans right. People are boycotting because they love Valve, and want to hold it to a higher standard than the other shit game companies out there.

It's not about a sense of entitlement on the gamers' parts. It's about blatant greed from an otherwise wonderful company."

My problem with L4D2 is not that it's going to be $60 for content that was basically promised for L4D. Or the fact that there are still HUGE bugs in L4D that will have been put on the backburner because it was being used as a beta for L4D2 IMO. My problem is that from a Competitive aspect L4D2 currently seems to imbalance the gameplay even further towards survivors in competitive (incendiary ammo, melee weapons). Can you imagine spawning a tank in an actual competitive match, only to be lit as soon as you get shot once? Or hunter pouncing into people that can not only still use their melee, but swing an axe for a 1hit with correct timing? Skeeting (shooting at close range) was the hard part of stopping hunters, the punting or meleeing of them is the easy part. I understand that L4D has a slow learning curve, but the solution to this was not MOAR CHEESE FOR SURVIVORS. Regardless, this should have been paid DLC, as they are going to split their already fragile competitive community in two, with the 'casual' competitive groups going to L4D2.

The other reason why I won't be shelling out monies for L4D2 is that from what I've seen from their playtesting team, they are incompetent at the game, causing the bugs for Finales and such remain in the final versions as they just cannot get through them (early tank on Versus Mode Death Toll Finale, Bug that after 15 minutes in survival tanks just didn't spawn, but no playtesting team made it past 12). So I paid $60 for a beta for L4D2, that's fine, I don't feel like shelling out another $60 REGARDLESS of whether they fix the blatent balance issues since it will have as many bugs as L4D when it came out if not more from all of the new content. Fix the first game, get a playtesting team that knows how to play the game, then try to make a sequel IMO. Just my 2 cents, I know alot of people are pissed at this release for various reasons, but I just can see nothing good coming out of it for the competitive community.

Let them have their say, guys. I'm on the fence about the issue, but I've heard retarded arguments from *both* sides. L4D does still feel lacking in content, like it could use at least another campaign. But, I'm holding off judgment because the game will probably change a lot (hopefully) before it's release. Remember how L4D first looked in beta form? I'm not going to go ahead and lick Valve's ass like some of you do, or burn them in effigy form, let's just wait and see how it turns out.

Well said.

My concern, and it is merely a concern, is that a company I love and admire is doing something that could lead to them being undesirable. People are quick to point out that Valve is a company, and company's are meant to make money; very true, they wouldn't exist without this philosophy. But how many of us are fans of companies that aren't in videogames? Certainly, there are product lines that inspire a bit of loyalty, but nothing outside the realm of videogames seems to draw such distinct battle lines. But what Valve has always stood for is a company that values its fans and quality over quantity. It's a philosophy I share, and it's a company I'm proud to support.

I think a lot of this backlash is an immediate response to that philosophy not being met here; people are worried they'll lose the Valve they love. As far as I'm concerned, Valve has built up quite a bit of grace over the years, and I will (likely) enjoy their games for years to come. So long as they maintain that philosophy that made me a fan.

Should a Left 4 Dead be released every year from now on, my opinion may change. If TF2 or CS start getting yearly, full price updates in the form form of "new releases" I'll call foul. However, this is a company that has treated me well, and I'm not going to flip my opinion just yet.

You wouldn't understand Jimmles, it's only the PC gamers complaining, but the sequel is being made primarily for the 360 crowd because the game is both successful and more viable on the platform. And nobody playing on a 360 is going to complain about a yearly sequel.

The original L4D is ultimately a fatally flawed game for me and I regret buying it. I hope this one fixes the problems (especially if gauntlet style sections completely replace any sort of the stupid camping sections, both mini and finale), but I've no interest in paying full price based simply on getting burned with the original.

the money making platform on the x360 is without a doubt. you do not need a community nor do you need any intelligent design for a game to be successful.
but the development team is responsible for making the sequel, the order did not come from the valve hq.
talking of the 360, there is no strong community there. just some random people paying out of their ass for some overpriced crap. like that new halo 3 mod, its the same game with the same conventions but with a $60 price tag. no one will organize an effort to halt such greediness. hell, these people who play on consoles are just happy to play anything with a AAA title

I'm feeling a bit bummed that this is going to be a straight up sequel and I hope that it won't be full price on the PC at least. Maybe there are some issues with the new director and the old content meaning it needed to be a separate game, I don't know. one year for a sequel is pretty fast in current standard,
(resistance 1 > resistance 2 = 2 years, gears of war > gears of war 2 = 2 years, modern warfare > modern warfare 2 = 2 years too)

for a sequel of a valve game it's crazy fast
(half life >half life 2 = 6 years)

What people don't seem to understand here is that while Valve has always made fantastic games, the value being purchased by their audience isn't the map collection. Their focus has always been on producing a balanced and innovative FPS engine and interface. Portal and L4D are just examples of what can be done with those tools. The real value to the audience comes from the vast quantity of user generated content that gets created using the SDK they release with every game. Valve itself could never compete with the sheer mass of content that their users can create, and they shouldn't try to. While the shift to releasing for the xbox does change this dynamic, it's only a matter of time before we get digital distribution of user generated content. That is, unless microsoft stands in their way.

Wait, PS3 people never even got the original ( even though from what I understand there was a demand for it, personally I didnt care), its rated game of the year by dtoid ( again didn't agree with that, felt there were many far better games that didn't even get nominated) and everyone loved it ( Im assuming ) you get a sequel in whats considered a very short time span.......................... and you guys are complaining?

Either (A)I missed something ( in that case kindly fill me in), (B) some of you are pissed that there turning DLC into a game ( from what I understand theres not much to the original , again I'm going off what I've heard don't bite my head off if I'm wrong), (C) this is the twilight zone( wouldn't shock me ).

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
