Volition talks Saints Row 2 PC Specs & Plans photo

Over at the Saints Row Community Forums, one of the community managers released some details about what kind of computer you'll need to run Saints Row 2 and what Volition's plans are for distribution and DRM.

It turns out that Volition is one of the companies that's realized that draconian DRM isn't a piracy solution, and they've decided to use Steam to validate copies of the game. According to the community rep., if you purchase a retail copy of the game you will need to do a 1-time validation over Steam - once you've done that, you can play the game whenever you want, online or offline. It's still DRM, but it seems pretty reasonable to me.

Volition also let slip some bad news for Microsoft - they're going to be foregoing Games for Windows Live in favor of Gamespy. Microsoft has been trying to push the service hard (likely so they can turn it into microtransaction heaven), but so far most companies don't seem to be interested.

Finally, hit the jump for the minimum and recommended specs. Is anyone excited for SR2 on PC, or has everyone already played in on console?

While I never liked Gamespy, even though it never really mad me angry (maybe that's why I don't like it?), I really liked the way GFW worked in Fallout 3. I don't think I've used any gamespy game service thingy since Tribes: Vengeance, has it changed any since then, or is it still relatively unnoticeable?

Either way, STEAM YAY!

I already have a day-one PS3 copy, but thanks anyway.

I am interested in this game, but I was more considering it for a console rather than the PC. Is there any indication that the PC version will have something available that the console will not or will be added later?

@bigby Better graphics (If you have a good computer), and they won't talk about if mod tools will be available, but since it's a PC game they probably will be somewhere down the line.

I was worried about the DRM, i'm glad Volition gets it.

The question is, will redownloads be enabled if I buy the retail version? The appeal of Steam, to me, is the ability ot redownload games later, no matter what computer I'm at. That, and the auto-patching is nice too.

Every game purchased over steam can be re-downloaded as it is linked to your account, not your computer, I do not see how this would change for Saints Row 2. You can run Steam of a portable hard drive if you wish.

I got the PS3 version before W_Mart even had the chance to get it in the display case. PC thugs are in for a real treat. Maybe they'll finally come out with some DLC love in the process? *hint, hint for Volition*

Well, if theyre not blatantly lying about the pc specs (and lets face it, they often consider playable to be 'runs at around 30 fps... when youre not moving much and not much is going on...' in order to put the specs as low as possible) i would consider this. Sounds like fun, and I enjoy sandbox multiplayer. Good that theyll go through Steam too.

TBH, I was more looking forward to some 32 player GTA IV, but thats a game designed for 'future hardware'... i did not know the 360 and PS3 came from the future.

Those processor requirements seem pretty high.

Well below what I have. And I've been waiting out for the PC version, so every little tidbit of news is great, especially when it involves Steam ;D

Can't be worse than the debacle that is GTA IV on the PC.

"Can't be worse than the debacle that is GTA IV on the PC."

It's only a debacle if you have a shitty PC.

some of us don't upgrade every 6 months- I am still on a 1.8 core2 - it's not a shitty machine, but it isn't up to specs

I was actually waiting on this for the PC, which sounds strange, I'm sure. Even though I personally don't need it to, hopefully it'll scale like COD4 did to work well on even lower end hardware at lower resolutions. I'm still amazed I ran COD4 on a Celeron 420 with an 8500GT and it was playable.

It would be nice if developers actually thought about the fact that not everyone that wants to play their game has an amazing gaming setup once in a while.

Well that would make my new PC that I'm currently building worthwhile. (Core i7 anyone?) But Steam only lets us Germans play cut games and I if they are banned we don't get them at all. So I think I'm gonna combine this with my love for achievements and play an UK-Import copy on my 360. Thank you GB for the 1 to 1 exchange rate. I like it when your economy is failing. ^^

Might still download the Pc version after I've bought it for the 360. I can't possibly feel guilty pirating something that I can't even buy in my country.

When Volition is done with Saints Row 2 can we PLEASE have a new Freespace?! I'm dying for a good space combat simulator! Wing Commander, Freespace, then ... nothing!!

I've been telling friends to hold out for this game instead of GTA4 for months now. They never listened. Now they complain that GTA is boring and looks shit on their mediocre pc's :)

3.2GHz dual core does sound a bit heavier than I would've expected from SR2 though, no way is it going to look that much better what with the engine and the graphical style they chose. Still, nice to hear about the DRM type. Not that it's gonna be any more effective than having no DRM at all, but eh..

I also wholeheartedly second John B: MOAR FREESPACE! Or just, any good singleplayer first person space combat sim with a good campaign and solid gameplay. Don't make me dust off my joystick just for X-Wing Alliance every year :(
