Volition: Make a game worth stealing, then talk piracy photo

The big piracy debate is one that will rage forever and ever, but at least on studio doesn't seem to care very much. Volition, currently developing Saints Row: The Third, is more concerned with making a decent game, and will worry about piracy when it has a game worth stealing.

“I don’t think [piracy] is something at the forefront for us," said studio manager Eric Barker. "First and foremost, we want to make sure we’re making a game people would want to pirate. Let’s make a game that’s worth stealing, and then we’ll worry about making sure they don’t."

You can't say fairer than that. Gotta love Volition.

Fucking respectable. Thumbs up, Volition.

Red Faction: Anal Pleasure is going to be pirated because no one is going to find it worth buying. And then once they count their lack of money, they'll just bitch about their losses being from pirates. When really it's because their products are lack luster at best. The next four years for this company is grim!

Hopefully they manage to make the PC version of the game worth stealing this time around too, heh. Optimization... it's a good thing =P

How about you make a game that people WANT TO PAY FOR BECAUSE IT'S SO AWESOME?

Seems like dumb logic to me to make a game that people would rather steal than pay for and try to stop it.

Clearly because every great game sells well, always. Way to divert the discussion into absolute nonsense Volition.

Broken statement; Vampire Rain got pirated plenty. People will steal games just because they can and quality be damned.

Having played and really enjoyed Saints Row 2, and having seen the list of spiffy things that they are including into this new installment, I have come to the conclusion that I will, in fact, pay actual real life money for Saints Row: The Third.

I think people are missing the point of the statement...

He's saying that if you make a game that is shit, that you don't get to complain about piracy because nobody was going to buy that shitty game anyhow.

Dv8thwonder and nailerr are correct. Pirates are going to pirate regardless. No amount of attempting to appease them is going to matter.

I'd say people are probably even more willing to pirate crappy games. My brother's friend pirates games, but he usually does it to mediocre or crappy games he wants to try out, he spends his money on good games.

If I ever pirated games (which I wouldn't) I would probably do the same. I'd only pirate games that I wanted to try, but didn't think I'd beat it

Damn, we just barely started and the level of ignorance is astonishingly at Elementary School levels.

"Let's be honest here. Pirates steal anything regardless of quality."

seriously?

"Seems like dumb logic to me to make a game that people would rather steal than pay for and try to stop it."

because, you know, people only steal stuff that's not valuable to them.

Devlopers should make games worth playing before figuring out how to secure the game? Theyre so crazy. Developers need to integrate DRM into gameplay!

"because, you know, people only steal stuff that's not valuable to them."

Exactly. In general, people are willing to pay for stuff that they think is worth the money. Therefor, if you make a game that people think is worth the money, people will pay for it. If they make a game that sells for $60 but I only value it at $10 then I'm more likely to pirate it, not pay for it. So instead of trying to make a game that people think is worth less than what you are asking (and thus turn to piracy), make a game that is worth what you are asking. How is that a hard concept for you to understand?

Actually, although RFG got great overall reviews, it didn't actually sell all that well. Had it not been for SR2's success, there likely wouldn't have been another RF game.

Why do people on the internet never understand anything that isn't outright stated? Are we that shallow as a culture?

He's saying they'd rather worry about the game's quality than how easy it'll be to pirate, which is a sentiment that only a complete troglodyte could disagree with. But he didn't just say that; he actually put a little bit of thought into his wording and made it into a wonderfully quotable bon mot.

So, of course, pirates start pouring in to yell at Jim for daring them to call a spade a spade, and the remainder of the Angry Internet Men react vitriolically, either because they don't immediately understand the point of the quote, or because inarticulate rage is their default reaction to everything now.

Oy.

Oh, and to the guy who's wondering why the picture looks so weird, with everyone's hair flying in different directions and shit? Saints Row is, essentially, the Crank of games. It is about impossibly attractive people and impossibly ugly people acting like caricatures and doing things that a Saturday morning cartoon's writers would reject as being "too unbelievable," usually involving things going boom and bang and splat and rat-a-tat. To paraphrase Roger Ebert, it is the kind of game you want to describe using all caps and four exclamation points. Now, you either think that is Beautiful, or you think it is Awful. Judging from your comment, I predict you would come down in the latter camp, in which case, Rockstar's games are the ones you want.

For myself, I love both, and don't understand why some people think we're Not Allowed to have both. But that is a whole other argument.

@maaax: because if I can get something I value at $60 for free why the hell should I pay for it? I can spend that $60 on something else and in the end have $120 of stuff.

They are saying they want to give people an incentive to give a shit. We don't operate on "In General", that's just silly.

This was part of a larger conversation about how they were going to do their PC ports in house instead of the assy outsourcing they've done before, which is a far more interesting point. It's a shame RF:A looks like ass. Could they put that building destruction tech in SR3 please?

So if I steal your game that means I think its worth something? What if I steak it for the sake of stealing it? Or to act as a middle man for someone else paying me to pirate the game for them? This argument sounds right but there are views that I know that aren't being considered.

since there is nothing preventing the playing of pirated games online while keeping the ability to play legit games online on console.

SR2 was pretty fucking awesome but jesus christ the PC port was awful. If there's any justification for pirating SR3 it'll be to see whether or not the PC port even works.

Regardless, provided it's as silly and as fun as SR2 it's a first-day.

Optimization issues aside on the PC port, SR2 was epic amounts of fun. Paid $40 bucks on Steam and never regretted it UNTIL... they NEVER released the DLC for PC.

I have liked Volition for a while, and this statment just makes me feel better. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IF YOU RELEASE DLC ON THE CONSOLES ONLY I WILL CUT SOMEONE. That was a dick move. I would have PAID you for the DLC that was on consoles for free.

Friend, if you are ever in a public restroom, you better keep your stall door tightly shut whilst defecating, because pirates are sure to want to get their hands on your mushy poopoo. All that matters is the successful steal, and to a lesser extent the pleasant feel of warm feces squishing through fingers.

Goddamnit, it's the crime that counts!

My opinion of volition just skyrocketed. I'm sure that people will roll their eyes at this reference but South Park hit the nail on the head in regards to piracy in the episode the boys crate their band named "moop". However, while I'm not here to judge those who do not(to each his own), I think game piracy is much more tricky then music piracy.I can understand pirating crap like Mindjack but games like Fallout 3,Dead Space 1 & 2, and many others deserve the success, and game sales for busting their asses!
