I've never used Remote Play myself, but I'm curious as to how it works. Does my PS3 have to remain on the entire time?

If the rumors are true, and the lowest price for a Wii U bundle is 250-300 smackers, and with the Vita still so pricey PLUS a PS3.... yeah, the Wii U is much cheaper.
Still, as a PS3/Vita owner, it makes the launch of the Wii U that much more underwhelming.

@Seymour - How does creating the illusion of software for Vita make Wii U's actual software "underwhelming?"
Sony has a huge problem with giving platforms like PSP and Vita their own identity and that is a tremendous reason why they fall behind the pack. Not to mention this "feature" is of no use to those that only own one or the other and rely on consuming large amounts of 3G bandwidth or a Wifi Hotspot to be practical.

Yes, your ps3 has to be on... but whats cool is that remote play even works over internet. I can play at my office 20 miles away from my system. Although, it is not amazing but its kinda cool...where is that Killzone that they showed us last year?

Goofy, perhaps, but it's a decent use for the dumb thing. Far less gimmicky than most anything else it's been used for. More than anything, though, I'm thinking that's a pretty excessive price tag for something I'll use twice and then never again.

Remote Play is a novelty if you want to play a PS3 game while lying in bed and that bed is in a different room from your PS3+TV, but beyond that it's basically just a novelty. The tech is neat, but not useful in very many instances.
I hope it works on single copies of those games. I don't have the collection, but i do have a digital copy of Shadow of the Colossus.
At first I thought it would be cool because I could be playing my PS3 from work over the internet, but the fact that you can't power it on remotely is making it more or less useless for me. Call me paranoid, but I'm not comfortable leaving my PS3 on for a whole day. :/

I never once mentioned software, I'm talking about the idea of this "tablet" controller. Aren't they doing like an update of LittleBigPlanet 2 to have it work with the LBP Vita mechanics (of course, you'd have to use your Vita controller)?
The Wii U is launching with this big emphasis on this controller thingy, "asymmetrical gaming". But, since then we've seen devices from both Sony and MS that seem to replicate it in almost every way. And as a person who already owns a PS3 and Vita (and a 360), my interest in being a Wii U purchaser has gone down.
But I'm still probably gonna buy it for the updated (or, should I say, "fixed") Ninja Gaiden 3, Mario Wii U, Pikmin 3, Project P-100, etc.

Yes wiiu is a complete ripoff of remoteplay, probably even down to the codecs used.

@Ogoda: There's an option to be able to power it on in the ps3s remote play settings. I believe. Haven't fucked with it yet, but I remember seeing that when thinking about it.
Remote play suffers from the same problems as onlive. You take a huge picture quality hit and there's plenty of input lag as well.

Try to contain your enthusiasm, until you actually try it. Even in your home network, you will probably find that the streaming video and game control of Remote Play leave a lot to be desired. When I tried it in the past, it left me wishing the game I was controlling was natively available on the Vita.
@Ogoda @PhilK3nS3bb3n: He's right. There's an option in your PS3 System software to be able to turn your PS3 on remotely, and you can shut it down when you're done. Unfortunately, the lag is not suitable for action games, in my opinion. Until we get a lot faster web in the West, particularly with minimal ping time, I doubt Remote Play will ever work successfully enough to be more than a passing interest.
You can remote play Retro/Grade (or at least the demo). I only tried it once and just one level but it worked pretty well. On the PS3's XMB remote play can be laggy, but that lag did not seem to show during the game.

Support for Remote Play is actually a boon for the Wii U, as it could increase the inclusion of tablet-like features in multi-platform games.

Well, my tongue hurts. The thing is not working, Where is the patch? Both my PS3 ans Vita are up to date, and loading the ICO + SoC Collection does not bring any update options.

If Microsoft can make all 360 games able to be installed to the console's HDD, even ones released before the feature was implemented, why can't Sony follow suit with something like across the board Vita compatibility with the PS3 games?
I want to use that sweet Vita d-pad on fighting games via Bluetooth or other local wireless signal, not use a workaround with lag-tastic Remote Play that relies on an internet connection.

No, really. That's actually a serious question. I tend to think that Sony gets the shaft a lot of the time on this site, but the lack of universal Remote Play (over the internet, over a local network, or one to one) for EVERY Playstation 3 game is absolutely fucking ridiculous and completely inexcusable.
I can let the PS1 shit slide. There's a reason for that whether you people want to admit it or not. No reason for this at all beyond laziness and incompetence. At all.

People really seem to be missing the difference between "Cross Controller" and "Remote Play".
Remote Play = You can use your Vita to play PS3 games, as long as the PS3 is on and both devices are connected through the internet. This is such a case
Cross Controller = You can use the Vita to add features to your games, like being able to complete a touch screen puzzle in the Vita to make a door in LBP 2 open. This doesn't mean that you can play LBP 2 on your Vita, that would require Remote Play. LittleBigPlanet 2's DLC will be this.
