Because the point was never to curtail used sales, not even a little bit. Online passes have always been a means of double dipping on a single sale; profiting off of the second hand market. The whole "we need online passes because the second hand market is tantamount to theft" argument is PR garbage that has zero factual support./
Anyway, so the retail and digital versions cost the same if you want online features? I'd hesitate to call that balance, its more like a continuation of the imbalance in charging the same amount for the same features when one side of the coin costs quite a bit less to produce.
@Matt Dusza - It wasn't bought on the network, it was a retail copy. Games bought on PSN won't require an online pass because they are considered as "New".

lol, an online pass for a fucking golf game. I'm assuming you could store these digital games on your ps3...otherwise that memory card will get full in no time.
@Veron
Learn to read. He says "The retail copy comes with an online pass. Those who buy from the PSN need to purchase the ticket separately."
Sony being worse than Microsoft? You, sir, have been around Microsoft lately, huh? How about Xbox Live just to play online? The PS3, PC, and Wii have that for free, why isn't Live? And don't tell me it's worth it. Is Xbox Live really that different from PC or PS3? PC obliterates Xbox Live, and what does Live have over PSN? Cross game chat, ESPN, an arguable "better" online community, and what? That's it? Bing, YouTube? PS3 has had that way before Live even announced those features. The new dashboard? You're an even idiot. It's so freaking messy and cluttered. The XMB (in my opinion) is much more simpler, and easier to navigate and also easy to look at.
Anyways, on topic. This doesn't really affect me. Most of the games I buy are bought new, so online passes don't anger me. However, I do have to worry about the future of gaming if I don't take any action against this. Online passes may not be that bad right now, but there's a high chance that it will get much worse.
...I've lost the plot...
...But...The DIGITAL version, you buy ONLINE, needs the pass to play ONLINE?
Well...I'm okay with passes to an extent, but making you buy one when you purchase an online version of the game?
Fuck that, and fuck you Sony.
I will not buy any game digitally if I need to buy a separate pass to play online. Heck, I'll refuse to buy a retail copy out of protest.
No game is worth you taking it in the ass.
the fact that after Uncharted 3 sony will now start putting online passes makes me sick.
they were times i have to re input a code multiple times just because the network doesn't recognize me.
remember the batman arkham asylum dlc pass not working??
or how about EA games pass code expiring???
soo many wrong things about bullshit online passes it makes me sick that sony and more and more publishers will be going into this route.
next generation may be my last gaming if BS like this keeps up
You don't see MS pulling this shit and that's because this is what Xbox Live is for. If PSN was more like live, they wouldn't even be able to put the likes of Naughty Dog up to such lameshit excuses for the online passes.
Its true that third parties do online passes on Live, but its EA, THQ and the other usual suspects that do it on PSN and Steam as well. MS themselves don't to it because they had back-up plan for revenue
Nintendo has a back-up plan, too. Its called making great games with lots of content for a good price. Crazy, I know, but it works.
Sony has more or less un-sold me on a Vita entirely and sold me on the next Xbox, Wii U and Steam for next generation. With Team Ico fading after The Last Guardian anyway I see no reason to stick with them after PS3. Its all gone downhill since the day the backed out of PS2 backward compatibility and just gotten worse from there.
What other platform holders give, Sony takes away.
I'm not going to go extremist, and say that this will be the end of the Vita, but I want a Vita, and every day Sony just keeps making it harder and harder for me to justify saving money for one.
destroying the industry one fucking game at a time.
does sony, ea, ect know they are shooting themselves in the foot and killing online multiplayer?
what if i want a refund because i don't play online and bought the game new at retail? i have no choice to opt out but can if the i buy if from the ps store? thats BULLSHIT.
so they need to deduct that price from the end sale if i so choose to not want any online lag fest dick measuring contest playing a pedophiles version of golf.
need an online pass to play dead space 2 online, and guess what, not one fucking person is playing it online at this very moment.
they are killing replay value all together.
here's the next hairbrained idea soon to be talked about. charging for playing the game after already beating it.
As for me:
FUCK. ONLINE. PASSES.
I have no interest what so ever in playing hotshots online, so il be picking up the digital version to save some extra bucks.
Thanks Dale.
But not if they're going to pull shenanigans like this.
@Dale
How did you test this when you have a retail version?!?!?!?!?!?!??
Uh, what? Sony and an online pass makes them worse than Microsoft with their proprietary everything, charging for peer-to-peer online play, oh and online passes?
you so crazy.
PSN always was, is and always will be worse than XBL. do you guys even know who started online passes? Sony. do you know what network pushed other publishers into online passes? PSN.
Sony's bullshit policies regarding PSN pushed publishers into Online Passes, not second-hand market. which also later pushed online passes on 360 and PC users.
Sony's policy is to not only push all online expenses on 3rd parties(all servers for multiplayer games, leaderboards must be run by publishers of those games), 3rd parties also have to pay for space on PS Store and additional % from each sold copy of the game via PSN. the only thing that sony handles themselves are PSN accounts servers and main PS Store servers. even servers for Sony published games are handled by developers of those games. on the other hand there's Microsoft that offers free servers and Xbox Live infrastructure to every publisher. EVERYTHING regarding online is handled by MS free of charge - that's the reason for Xbox Live fee.
another is the fact that each country with official Xbox Live service have their entire infrastructure with exclusive game servers, entire Xbox Live Marketplace and all of XBL features build within the territory of that country. it's not like with PSN, where all of their infrastructure is in some no-name vilage in US FOR ENTIRE PSN(europe, US and asia).
let's not forget the fact that everything is unified in Xbox Live instead some PSN bullshit made by 5 year olds. let's not forget that "quality" of online experience on ps3 with ridiculous lags and time spend downloading anything from updates to games and patches that takes forever.
I avoid online pass games like the plague!
and
This isn't Superswing Golf (See: Pangya) so I don't care*!
*Sorry Hotshots, Sorry Tigerwoods, Sorry Insert whatever other golf related games there are.
so no separate purchase for PSN games.
not really. sony did that in japan with many titles long before other publishers even started thinking about online passes. same goes to closing servers of console games.
plus it doesn't change a thing - sony dumping all of online expenses on 3rd parties pushed them into Online Passes. not to mention all those policies regarding ability to close online servers for any game completely less than 6 months after launch of those games.
sony scammed loads of people in japan when they first released on ps3 full-priced online-only games/MMOs with subscription just to close servers of those games less than 12 months after release(some weren't even out for more than 9 months). and all that while they were still officially selling those games.
Because there arent online passes at all for Xbox Live games too? Get a fucking clue dude.
The online pass is INCLUDED with all Digital versions.
I purchased the digital version and it DOES come with the online pass. It shows as already downloaded, and purchased, but I never actually got the item.
He's talking about FIRST party Sony games.
Gears of War 3 does not have an online pass. Fable III did not have an online pass.
