Vita games getting simultaneous digital/retail releases photo

Sony has confirmed that all PlayStation Vita games will feature simultaneous launches of digital and retail games. This is yet another improvement over the failed PSPgo experiment, where some physical games would take weeks to reach the PSN, or sometimes never arrive at all.

According to Sony engineer Chris Norden, "PSN is supported from day one, right out of the box at launch." The Vita will be a bit more open than current home consoles too, with free-to-play business models supported by the system.

Norden also reconfirmed cross-game chat as an exclusive PS Vita feature, something that's still missing from the PlayStation 3 despite fan pressure.

"We know everybody wants it on PS3 so we're doing it on Vita," he said.

Did he just troll us? Well done, sir!

Hahaha.. probably unintentional on his part, but still makes for a wonderfully trollish statement.

The PSV have more memory, so that is that for cross game chat. The fact that games will be launched both in PSN and retail at the same time is great new too. Hope the PSN version comes cheaper in the West as it is the case in Japan.

3 Vita posts in a row? Keep it up Jim. I might have to "return the favor."

"We know everybody wants it on PS3 so we do it on Vita" Wait.. what?
I mean nice and all but why for god's sake not doing it for the PS3 too?

Or do you want to keep that as a selling point for the PS4? Oh, good thinking there. And probably the controller for PS4 will be PSVitas Lite? ;P

That's good to hear. Other than the expected 3G cap and the expected nonsense around tue memory cards, my interest in the Vita is rising.

@Cudgeon

It's a RAM limitation. The PS3 doesn't have enough RAM to support it. The Vita does.

I don't think he's trolling. He was probably thinking when he said that "Stop fucking asking about PS3 cross game chat, we already told you it was PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for it to happen, so now we're giving it to you on the Vita."

Sounds about right. I heard they were going with Android games according to an old Ipsos survey I took.

Well at leas tthey are doing one thing right tho I wonder how many games they just guaranteed would be 3DS exclusives because the dev/pub in question refuses to go digital. I'm looking at you Disney.

Awesome news! I'd rather NOT have cross game chat though.

I'd rather someone wake Dale up. At least he isn't inherently negative about anything Vita related.

Didn't they claim the PSPgo would have this exact same feature? I'll believe it when I see it Sony.

I seriously can't wait to get one of these. The news just keeps getting better and better! I really hope there are a TON of RPGs for it. I do wonder about development costs though. If these games are like current gen games, I certainly hope budgets won't be!!

Whooo Vita!!!

Also isn't there some kind of patent preventing them from doing cross game chat on the PS3? Or was that music while gaming thing. i dunno.

There's obviously some major block on PS3 cross game chat, which doesn't bother me at all, i very very very rarely use it on my eggsbawks.

Sounds cool and all, but it still feels like it won't matter much due to that horrific battery life.

@pokota - Are you referring to this article being negative? 0_o Anything that would be *misconstrued* as "negative about the Vita" in this post is just statement of fact. PSPgo failed to realize fully functional PSN connectivity, and PS3 still doesn't have cross-game chat.

Everything about this article paints the Vita as being greater than whatever it's compared to.

So apparently Joystiq is reporting that the Vita may not be compatible with PSone classics after all...

I'm not as torn as others about the possibility to not be able to play PS one games on a Vita, but, yeah, this is definitely a disappointment.

I didn't think there'd be any problem, and having the two sticks back meant not having to compromise with games that offered simultaneous analog movement and d-pad use like Final Fantasy IX.

That PSP nub is -not- comfortable, especially when navigating game menus. It only lets you move in as many directions as a normal d-pad can handle instead of the full 360 degrees with a stick.

"Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?

A: Users can play PSP titles, minis and PSone classics titles which are offered on PS Store. We do no have any plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point."

They've said that they can't do cross game chat on ps3. like the hardware, mixed with how ps3 software works, just won't allow it to be possible.

Sorry Sony....you've been burning your most loyal fans too often for us to put up with any of this BS anymore.
