That right there is pretty much the most awesome but of news they could have said. The best part is that we know it works. Some games on the PSP used this feature, like Lair, and it worked.
To be fair, Sony essentially announced this function at the exact same time as the Wii U reveal with their Ruin demo, so it isn't as if this is a feature exclusive to the Wii U later copied for the Vita.
Unless I am mistaking, the PSP was released in 2004 used a very old wi-fi chipset for its time, the processor was clocked (at its peak) 333hz and the RAM was about 32mb. All of those specs and the fact that Sony had been making the PS Vita kind of made it so remote play did not work.
The PS Vita specs are upgraded from the ground up to make the technology to do these things. I have not heard anything from third parties supporting this but, there is bound to be something in the works if companies like Capcom dabble in things like Ad-Hoc Party.
PSP did this and it did it horribly. Most people never used it
Plus its not like you're going to get many developers on-board to make Vita compatibility for the PS3 games that are out now. Those games are done.
This would be exciting if the PS3 and Vita released side by side and the functionality was there at the start. This will be underutilized to the point of failure. You know, just like everything that comes when a piece of hardware is firmly established and developers are set in their ways with it.
I mean, how many devs used the PS2 HDD? Final Fantasy XI, RE Outbreak and some 2k sports games. Camera for PSP? Invizimals, that's about it.
And Nintendo proved this dozens of times over, that second analog nub might be one of the few things a platform maker gets away with. Playstation got away with the Multi-tap, after all.
But a new-standard mid-generation? Not bloody likely.
I'd be much, much more confident in the "transfarring" concept, but sadly support for that seems to be vanishing before Vita has even launched. Konami introduced it and then backs out months later.
Remote play as a fallback is just too shaky to put much faith in. Too many variables and things that could go wrong.
There are patents out there from Sony which detail an Onlive type of connectivity between a 'handheld/mobile device' and a 'cell powered home console' but, they could just be patents.
Can we focus on the features that make any kind of sense now, Sony? How about...Online, DLC, or maybe, oh I don't know, maybe we could see more than five minutes of a game? Is that too much to ask?
"However a direct connection could fix that."
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of "remote" in "Remote Play"?
-The Ps Vita new and the technology implemented in this way is new. Wi-fi readio signals and devices are out there but, the PS Vita doing that with PS3 is, by definition, a new thing. Was there something in the Roman Empire called PS Vita and did it have wireless remote play?
Actually, I would like to know since "Vita" is latin word, after all.
-Patches happen all the time. Pretty big patches that go in depth and restructure entire levels or controls get downloaded over wi-fi quite frequently.
-That is clearly not true. If that where a fact, the PS Move, Kinect, Wii Motion Plus, would never have support. As it stands, developers do not mind adding functionality to those technology and the PS Vita (unlike motion control peripherals) is a stand alone consumer device that will build an audience of millions of users. This is important because there is already and established multi-million audience that own PS3 home consoles. Those environment conditions would really favor developers taking their time out to patch or make all new games built around remote play.
-Haha! The "Transfarring" concept is still well supported in Japan but, SCEA and SCEE just are: a) not approving that certain outline /or/ b) Kojima Studios have not pressed for the idea to be revealed outside of Japan.
"Cloud saving" (which is a very different concept) is still supported by SCE and is found Dragon's Crown, Ruin, final Fantasy X, Dust 514, Street Fighter x Tekken, MVC3U and probably others (which are supported on Ps3). There is also Little Big Planet and Modnation Racers (for the PS Vita) which will support things like transferring levels and clothes bought/made from the PS3 versions. PS Vita versions for Little Big Planet and Modnation Racers will be different though. Double Eleven (headed by ex-R* staff members) is makng Little Big Planet for the PS Vita and the same studio that made the console version of Modnation Racers is creating the new Vita version.
-Your argument is invalid as proved by the current first and third party support for similar technology found in the PS Vita (i.e. Cross platform multi-player in Wipeout 2048). Handheld interaction with home consoles has advanced beyond the days of PSP and PS3. I do foresee Sony advancing the technology of wireless remote play (between PS vita and PS3). I only know the current software is in beta form but, Sony have showed enough interest to RND the concept and they will find developers who will make use of the tools. There will also be many venues by which Sony will market the Remote Play connectivity since the technology is found in two relevant devices: PS Vita and PS3.
Wii U will perform better because in this regard because that is the point of the system.
Every game will use the wii u tablet controller, but such cannot be done for the ps3 because it would split the fanbase.
So it will probably be the latter.
Also, Wii U will use wii controllers, so games that use wii motionplus are still a possibility.
