Visceral holds action higher than horror for Dead Space 2 photo

The one thing I was most afraid would happen to Dead Space 2 is totally happening: less horror, more action. Sure, we already have an abundance of action-centric videogames, and what small amount of horror games we do get mostly end up being mediocre at best, but what's the harm of one more?

In an interview with IndustryGamers, Visceral Games senior VP Nick Earl revealed as much. "We've got two main teams; we've got some supporting content for Dante's Inferno coming out, but we'll mostly shift our attention to Dead Space 2."

"The first one was well received, and we want to take advantage of that start with something that has tremendously wide appeal. We're more focused on the action than the horror this time. We're more empowering to the player."

As a lover of Dead Space, I can safely say that doesn't sound the least bit appealing. Dale North, who was also a fan of the original game, had a similar reaction upon hearing this news. Are we a dying breed or what?

What the heck? I hope it's nothing like RE5 and we're going to fight necromorohs or whatever in some bright ship where we can see them coming 60 miles away...come on guys, we need more scary!

And here comes the barrage of bullsh*t to make me hate Dead Space 2, before it's even released. The original's horror setting and gameplay were what made it, and now that's being wittled down.

I hadn't played a creepy abandoned-space-ship-with-monsters-on-it game that good since System Shock 2. In fact, a lot of Dead Space reminded me of SS2, which is probably why I love it so damned much.

Looking back, did anyone actually find the past Resident Evil games (not 4 or 5) to be a horror game? I mean really now. I mean, I wasn't exactly horrified when I played the games. And yes, I'm all for having more action than horror in Dead Space 2.

Oh boy, this doesn't sound good.

I hope by "empowering" the player they mean giving us more options, rather than just giving is the biggest weapons possible. Isaac is an Engineer, not a Marine.

Might as well play RE5. These "horror" titles are all about killing zombies/demons/aliens with an unrealisical awesome gun nowadays.

Dead Space was an amazing game, very atmospheric. What haunts me now is this trend of horror games becoming action games, it shows the survival horror genre is under extinction on the mainstream market, like adventure games were once. How I miss Grim Fandango. I don't want to miss survival horrors.

i gotta say... it's disappointing that such a great game can be diminished by a marketing teams want to "appeal to a wider demographic". sad day indeed.

So its gonna have the same effect the first one did, except on purpose? TBH, I'd rather play a Horror game with better action than a game that tries to scare me and doesn't work, as completely stupid as that logic sounds.

Two nights ago I beat Dead Space. I know, I'm a slow poke and didn't buy it until recently.

I really enjoyed it, but thought it had the potential to be so much more horrifying if the game worked harder at exploiting the player's feeling of safety in, say elevators for example.

Regardless, I thought, "I enjoyed that so much, I will definitely buy Dead Space 2."

After reading this, I've decided to never ever use the word definitely again.

Epic spoilers: Visceral, as an arm of EA, is very concerned with making money rather than making good games. Action shooter kill stuff games sell well. Horror games do not. This is surprising, if you live under a rock.

i just bought the game TODAY!!! because i thought that this was going to be one of the few vrabe franchises that was going to be horror-fucused unstead of action!!! i had really high hopes for dead space if it was going to stay with the survival horror genre!! now dead space is going out of control just like RE5 did!!!

why?? why??WHY??!!!!.

So, this is going from a vibrant movie-like horror to a "SyFy"-esque 'made for TV' movie? Not in terms of quality, but in terms of the action. Ugh. I need a decent horror game. Someone should really get to making one.

That is a pretty shitty sign :/ Dead Space scared the piss out of me, which isn't particularly hard. However, it also scared the holy bejeezus out of my super tough-guy brother, who screamed like a little girl more than once while he watched me play. That game had goddamned MOXIE, and it sucks that Visceral seems to want to betray their goddamned name and decide that scary isn't so much the thing this time around. Isaac can kick ass and still get the balls scared off him.
And hey maybe (and this is grasping a frickin straws like a mofo), they mean that they have the horror stuff down pat, and just want to make the action better? Maybe? ...God dammit.

I just think this means the action will have priority in terms of gameplay design. Instead of (unsuccessfully) trying to scare you, making sure the gameplay experience is tighter, developing the dismemberment and puzzle mechanics of it.

If you found Dead Space scary (and I'm a right baby when it comes to horror games so this is not me trying to be butch) it's probably to do with the creepy atmosphere. I don't think that'll change one bit, it'll still have a scifi/horror backdrop.

I stopped playing Dead Space 1 because I felt fearless and invincible in it. This isn't going to help. I'm so fucking sick and tired of this trend in horror games. Who the fuck decided that horror games had to either have shit-tastic controls and cameras or had to be regular action games except with monsters.

"Who the fuck decided that horror games had to either have shit-tastic controls and cameras or had to be regular action games except with monsters."

Remove shitty controls and a regular action game is what you have. They're just enemies with "scary textures".

I think what you're after is limited ammo and fear of dying, so crank the difficulty up. Works in Dead Space, and I'm sure it'll work in 2.

The over-abundance of action was one of the most blaring weaknesses of Dead Space 1. The game was at its best early on, when you felt vulnerable and there was more emphasis on creepy mood-setting and less on blasting everything that moved. The predictable heaps of fear-numbing action was one of the things that made the game "good, but not as great as RE4".

Sad to hear that the devs apparently don't have a clue, and are going the same way that Capcom went with RE5. Wonderful. They had a great start to what could have been a memorable action-horror series, and instead think gamers would prefer another Gears of War clone...

Scratch another game off the preorder list. At least I'll have more cash.

Viceral games, how about NO?

I(/We) don't need another over the shoulder space marine shooting with or without covers, it's been done like million times. I played the first one, because of it's 'horror' value(although there wasn't much but still) and now you are going to ruin it? Oh, well at least that freed another 70€(93$) to something else.

Okay, okay, let's not kid ourselves. Dead Space was only scary because of the atmosphere, and it had nothing to do with the lame "oh no, something scary is happening behind this bulletproof glass and I suspiciously cannot open this door while it's happening". The actual scripted "horror" moments fell pretty flat.

If they keep the fantastic design choices from the first game (especially the sound, which was 70% of it anyways) and scrap the campy moments, I'm sure it will be almost as scary as the first one. RE4 was more action-oriented than REs 1-3, and its arguably the best iteration of the series. Aliens, despite being more action oriented, was just as good as Alien.

I have no doubt the sequel will be just as good as the first one (which I loved the shit out of)

Fuck Nick Earl. Fuck that guy. What kind of name is that anyway, for a VP? Oh right, VPs are boring and feed us lies all the time. So Nick Earl, tell me it's a lie or it's your balls in the vice grip. Or blender. Or those things that flatten things in video games and you have to time your moves right to get past them without dying, but I don't really think that they exist in a physical form. That's right, you are going to miss a jump and lose all your lives.

That, or I blame the team for being such cockswaggles and catering to their "action-oriented target demographic". Also, Bioshock's much lauded focus-testing did not do wonders for the game. Some might say the game was total shit if you compared it to the source material. Those 'people' might even be me. Maybe. Just like how I 'might' hunt down VP-of-Pissing-Off-Their-Customers, Nick, (aka the Earl of Cocking Shit Up) and castrate him. It will be a great demonstration of stringy ball physics (TM). (Not Really)

But, really? Why would you do this to me, Dead Space Team? Visceral is dead, long live Sledgehammer. Until Activision makes them do a peripheral game, that is.

And for the record, it's just a rant, I will "see what this new game is about". It may extend to purchasing a box of said product, if this "action first" policy hasn't any weight.

P.S. I own both consoles, bitches.

You people should consider a different example when viewing this title, think of it as James Cameron's Aliens to Ridley Scott's Alien, a natural evolution of the original property.
