The one thing I was most afraid would happen to Dead Space 2 is totally happening: less horror, more action. Sure, we already have an abundance of action-centric videogames, and what small amount of horror games we do get mostly end up being mediocre at best, but what's the harm of one more?
In an interview with IndustryGamers, Visceral Games senior VP Nick Earl revealed as much. "We've got two main teams; we've got some supporting content for Dante's Inferno coming out, but we'll mostly shift our attention to Dead Space 2."
"The first one was well received, and we want to take advantage of that start with something that has tremendously wide appeal. We're more focused on the action than the horror this time. We're more empowering to the player."
As a lover of Dead Space, I can safely say that doesn't sound the least bit appealing. Dale North, who was also a fan of the original game, had a similar reaction upon hearing this news. Are we a dying breed or what?

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I hadn't played a creepy abandoned-space-ship-with-monsters-on-it game that good since System Shock 2. In fact, a lot of Dead Space reminded me of SS2, which is probably why I love it so damned much.
...seriously, what the fuck?
I hope by "empowering" the player they mean giving us more options, rather than just giving is the biggest weapons possible. Isaac is an Engineer, not a Marine.
I really enjoyed it, but thought it had the potential to be so much more horrifying if the game worked harder at exploiting the player's feeling of safety in, say elevators for example.
Regardless, I thought, "I enjoyed that so much, I will definitely buy Dead Space 2."
After reading this, I've decided to never ever use the word definitely again.
i just bought the game TODAY!!! because i thought that this was going to be one of the few vrabe franchises that was going to be horror-fucused unstead of action!!! i had really high hopes for dead space if it was going to stay with the survival horror genre!! now dead space is going out of control just like RE5 did!!!
why?? why??WHY??!!!!.
And hey maybe (and this is grasping a frickin straws like a mofo), they mean that they have the horror stuff down pat, and just want to make the action better? Maybe? ...God dammit.
If you found Dead Space scary (and I'm a right baby when it comes to horror games so this is not me trying to be butch) it's probably to do with the creepy atmosphere. I don't think that'll change one bit, it'll still have a scifi/horror backdrop.
right?
Remove shitty controls and a regular action game is what you have. They're just enemies with "scary textures".
I think what you're after is limited ammo and fear of dying, so crank the difficulty up. Works in Dead Space, and I'm sure it'll work in 2.
Sad to hear that the devs apparently don't have a clue, and are going the same way that Capcom went with RE5. Wonderful. They had a great start to what could have been a memorable action-horror series, and instead think gamers would prefer another Gears of War clone...
Scratch another game off the preorder list. At least I'll have more cash.
Not a good sign.
I(/We) don't need another over the shoulder space marine shooting with or without covers, it's been done like million times. I played the first one, because of it's 'horror' value(although there wasn't much but still) and now you are going to ruin it? Oh, well at least that freed another 70€(93$) to something else.
Waiting for game designers and producers to realise that by trying to cater to EVERYONE, you end up catering to NO ONE.
If they keep the fantastic design choices from the first game (especially the sound, which was 70% of it anyways) and scrap the campy moments, I'm sure it will be almost as scary as the first one. RE4 was more action-oriented than REs 1-3, and its arguably the best iteration of the series. Aliens, despite being more action oriented, was just as good as Alien.
I have no doubt the sequel will be just as good as the first one (which I loved the shit out of)
Or mark him on your maps as "voice of reason" at the very least.
Stupid Devs, stupid publishers who have them by the balls
Wholeheartedly agree. I need more Event Horizon and less aliens vs predators in my sci-fi HORROR.
That, or I blame the team for being such cockswaggles and catering to their "action-oriented target demographic". Also, Bioshock's much lauded focus-testing did not do wonders for the game. Some might say the game was total shit if you compared it to the source material. Those 'people' might even be me. Maybe. Just like how I 'might' hunt down VP-of-Pissing-Off-Their-Customers, Nick, (aka the Earl of Cocking Shit Up) and castrate him. It will be a great demonstration of stringy ball physics (TM). (Not Really)
But, really? Why would you do this to me, Dead Space Team? Visceral is dead, long live Sledgehammer. Until Activision makes them do a peripheral game, that is.
P.S. I own both consoles, bitches.
