Virtual On XBLA dated for release this spring photo

Virtual On, the mech fighting game that can be found in literally every arcade on the face of this planet, has been dated for Xbox LIVE Arcade. Because simplifying the name down to Virtual On LIVE for us silly Americans would be far too easy, Sega is still referring to it as Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram. You can thank them later.

The game will be out in spring exclusively for XBLA, complete with a few cosmetic changes like high-resolution graphics and Gamer pic support. Virtual On will come packed with the classic one on one multiplayer, 10 arcade levels, and 14 score attack stages.

No word on pricing yet, but seeing as how 1200 Microsoft Points is practically the new 800 points these days, I wouldn't be too shocked to see it go for $15.

SEGA ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF VIRTUAL ON

Xbox LIVE® Arcade Gamers Get the Chance to Relive the Arcade Classic

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (March 12th, 2009) - SEGA of Europe ltd. today announced the return of Virtual On™, the classic mech arcade fighting game. Players will be able to revisit the Virtual On universe with several enhancements which include improved graphics and online multiplayer. Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram™ will be available Spring 2009 exclusively on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®.

Developed by SEGA’s AM3 division, famous for titles such as Crazy Taxi™ and Virtua Tennis™, Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram™ is based on the latest arcade version of the second game in the franchise, which is critically acclaimed and widely considered to be the best in the series. Players will square off against an AI or human opponent as they dodge, shoot, and slice their way to victory in one of the game’s many futuristic environments. Since the Virtuaroids dash with such quick movement, players are required to diversify their tactics, all while keeping a keen eye and quick trigger finger.

Available for the first time on Xbox LIVE®, Virtual On features high-octane mech action with 15 playable Virtuaroids. Players can choose how they want to play as each mech has its own defining characteristics. The game delivers an online 1 vs. 1 multiplayer battle mode, as well as fast-paced single player action through 10 Arcade-mode levels and 14 Score attack stages. Virtual On features numerous ways to earn achievements as well as voice communication.

Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram™ will be released exclusively on Xbox LIVE® Arcade in Spring 2009.

So is this version any good? I've only played the original Saturn one, and I loved it.

I always used Raiden, his special twin laser cannons were incredibly powerful, it could take away half your life bar in one hit. Since you always start each match facing each other, you could always blast the enemy away with the special laser, making it easy to finish the round.

From what I understand, this is a port of version 5.66 which came to arcades after the Dreamcast game was released.

Yeah looks like a port of Virtual On 2. I might be interested in it for $10, not $15 though. I mean, nothing can make up for the lack of the awesome arcade controls, but at least having 2 sticks (unlike all the consoles it came out on) will finally make it playable at home.

Very much looking forward to this. I wonder how well it will translate to dual analogue sticks though...

I held the xbox controller in my hand and tried to picture myself playing a game of virtual on. It didn't work. Offset sticks felt really awkward for this game. Then I remembered I had bought an xfps that I never used and was in the closet. Combined with a logitech wireless ps2 controller and it works like a charm. Twin sticks are still better though, I have s pair of saturn twin sticks in the closet, but ps2 controller+xfps is the next best thing.

You've just shattered my heart, Sega.
I bought Yakuza 2 AND Valkyria Chronicles!!! You couldn't do me a favor just this once? How many more obscure games must I buy?

unangbangkay took the thoughts right out of my head with this one. This is gonna be like playing Katamari with the 360 controller.

Which, for those who haven't played it, didn't work as well.

@Jordan

I pumped $20 at a time whenever I saw this at an arcade. It was never where I lived, sadly. I remember going apeshit when my Asian friend imported Oratorio on the DC!

I can't wait. Friday Night Fights VOOT edition!

I can't wait for this. I spent more than 1200ms points worth of quarters everytime I played this in the arcade.

Don't you give them any ideas with that 1200 points business. If it becomes true I'm blaming you now.

Also, I remember one of dem voltrons was named Dorkas. That was funny when I was a kid.

I thought Famatsu or whatever already confirmed it'd be 1200 points.

VoMarz was on PS2 and the controls were complained about as well. Just be fine with what you got, otherwise mod yourself some twin sticks.

Marz on the PS2 wasn't even really comparable to this game, in my opinion, whether we're talking about controls or gameplay. It just didn't feel right at all, all around.

@Pedrovay

I think any VOOT port on any console that comes without sticks is weird. So... moot point to argue that this game will control weird. It's not the sticks. Makes me wonder why anyone would port VO to a console without giving people sticks to play it with. It's a wholly different complaint over not getting a trance vibrator for REZ or a fishing controller for Sega Bass Fishing... Virtual On needs sticks with buttons on them. Not having them is a whole different experience.

I think someone still needs to make a super strong vibrator for Rez and dual sticks for this. SEE TO IT 3RD PARTYS. also, just bought RE5 =D

Also I could see this happening easy on the controler. Except jumping which was spreading the two sticks apart in the arcade. Cant see that happening with dual analog
