Virtual Console surprise coming? photo

Something big is apparently headed to the Virtual Console, and Go Nintendo got hint of it first. Here's what one of their readers transcribed and sent them from gaming mag GamesTM:

“Something big is coming to the Virtual Console, something that, for the past decade, certain corners of the retro community have been crying out for. I wish I could say more, but the uncertainties of publishing schedules prevents me from spilling the beans too early. Nevertheless, if what we’ve heard turns out to be true, the virtual console is about to become a lot more interesting and looks like it might turn out to be much more valuable to dedicated retro gamers than we first thought.”

Could this be the same Christmas surprise that was being hinted at earlier? I have my doubts, seeing as how that was (supposedly) related to the Wii Channels interface, and this is specifically to do with the Virtual Console. Maybe Nintendo finally managed to secure the rights to add Golden Eye to the list of VC titles? My guess is as good as yours.

As always, take this supposedly "legit" info with a pinch of salt.

Super Hyper Street Fighter II EX Plus Alpha Turbo Third Strike Championship Edition

This would also explain why Capcom's Wii support has been virtually non-existant (besides Res. Evil UC) up until now.

it's probably just demos. although a multiplayer Golden Eye would be cool too.

The only "something big that, for the past decade....gamers have been clamoring for," would be Dracula X and I highly doubt, although I would love to be proved wrong, that this is what they are talking about. I'm not really going to get my hopes up until they actually unveil this so called Holy Grail of retro gaming.

It's probably games from another console. Maybe the Neo Geo games , if it's Saturn games then I will go buy a Wii today because that's the only thing that could make me want one.

I like the idea of online VC play. But I thought we would have heard of it by now somewhere. Oh, and Nesticle was teh shit.

PS: sweet avatar cruds. Extra points if that was actually you :-P

It means NIntendo has secured the exlucsive rights to the really old retro games that predate NES. So all you arcade fans and atari fans can rejoice.

A German website supposedly confirmed demo downloads HERE

Online MP sounds excellent and would add a lot of value to some games.

On an even wilder thought, level editors would be cool too.

My guess goes to either the demos, or cached/background downloading. I'm sick of the spinning thing, whatever it is. Cache a page once in a while so you don't need to fetch all the goddamn time.

Hmmm... I'm thinking free copying of VC games to our DS. Apple made it easier for us to do the right thing and download music from iTunes legitimately so why not allow us to legitimately download the VC games to out DS instead of homebrewing emulators?

Meh... that's my $.02

I agree with DeusPayne, the 4-minute spinning nose ring screen has got to go.

I'll bet it's Commodore 64 emulation. That's the only thing Nintendo could add that would appeal to dedicated retro fans AND qualify as a major addition to the Virtual Console.

Erm, are you not reading the quote in its entirety?

"...something that, for the past decade, certain corners of the retro community have been crying out for."

It's in the first sentence for fuck's sake. I don't think the retro community has been crying out for VC online play for a decade, or any of the other things that are being posted and have not yet been out for a ten years. Dracula X would be a good guess, or maybe quality Saturn emulation.

I was also wondering if it's C64 emulation. "Certain corners of the retro community" could mean anything. Hell, for all we know it's a TRS-80 emulator, and I con't meant the CoCo.

Previous Japan-only titles or pre-NES games are my guesses.

Hell, they ought to use the Famcom versions of a number of NES titles. Since the publishers in Japan could use their own chipsets, their games often looked and sounded better then their NES versions. Take Contra for example.

Mother, Chrono Trigger, or Goldeneye. Also, there's a moogle in that pic up there. NES/SNES FFs on the Virtual Console? That'd be nice if, like me, you haven't bought all the re-releases for PSX.

anyone who thinks it is GameCube games or Dreamcast games have lost their mind.

It is probably a classic game, I am leaning towards Mother Earthbound and that stuff, probably Not Chrono trigger

Hopefully it's the Square & Enix Super Famicom games that were never released in America:
Seiken Densetsu 3, Romancing SaGa trilogy, Terranigma, Bahamut Lagoon, Star Ocean, and any others that I missed.
