I don't mean to flood you all with Virtua Fighter 5 posts, but you must see this fighting footage from the PlayStation 3 version. While it looks amazing, what concerns me is that it looks exactly like every other fighter in this genre that I've seen for the past 10 years. Can someone please explain why these games are so appealing, still?
Personally, I think that one looks pretty lame in terms of gameplay compared to, say, Soul Calibur. Not that I have a PS3, but if I did, I wouldn't be buying this game.
The game LOOKS amazing. But when it comes down to it, it's just a prettied up version of the same thing we've all been playing for years. Tell me, besides the graphics, what has changed?
Well for one the female competitors don't have HUGE breasts... Which is a move in the right direction.
And apparently something called "game play" is the difference, though I haven't been the biggest fan of fighting games since Street Fighter 2 for the snes so I wouldn't know.
Yes, the game does look great, but to be honest I got bored about half way through the video. Those moves they use seem so generic and bland, I lost interest in it. Everyone seems to use the same type.
One of the many things I hate about VF is that all the stages are just squares. Why even make different stages if they're all the same? Visually they might be different and a few have cages around them, but come on!
Thank you Summa ; I asked that twice in the last blog the same question, and it doesn't make sense to me. Like I said, every other fighter has some unique gameplay or enviroments, moves, characters, style, etc; so what makes VF so unique?
Also..
"Well for one the female competitors don't have HUGE breasts... Which is a move in the right direction. "
I think Philonious said this, and must have his penis cut off with a spork.
Thats a great question, where's the appeal? I've always had the attitude towards fighting games that has become popular to take against EA, where is the improvement? Whats the difference? A new coat of paint, couple of extra characters, maybe a new arena or two, I hate EA as much as the next guy but the whole fighting game genre has been churning out the same crap year after year and people still can't wait to get their hands on the next installment. I'll never understand it.
Did anyone else notice that the collision detection in this game sucks ass. In the first fight, near the end, when the guy kicks the girl and knocks her down - his foot isn't even close to her body.
The thing is hardcore fighting gamers tend to agree the game mechanics of the VF series are the most balanced and perfected of any 3D fighting game. They're never going to change that formula. And they won't add a bunch of stuff just to make it seem different. It would be like adding new rules to chess. There's no point.
Better graphics, a couple of extremely well put together new characters and a few new techniques and tweaks here and there are what you're going to see here and that's quite enough.
The same thing happens to all fighting games. How many versions of Street Fighter 2 and 3 came out? And how much changed? To most people, not much. To the hardcore, a lot more. It's all about perfecting the mechanics with fighting games. And if you're not one of the guys who buys a $200 arcade stick to play your fighting games with chances are you'll rather play Soul Calibur than VF anyway since its easier to get into and has more show off stuff in it or you'll go for DOA because you get to use bouncing boobs as punching bags. And to a lot of people, that's more fun than spending 2 hours a day precticing to time that 4 frame window that you have to hit to do some insane throw recovery or whatever.
My beef with 3D fighters is how sloppy they tend to be in comparison to games like Guilty Gear X on the Dreamcast. I think most gamers prefer the 2D fighter variety, like Philonius said, we buy them every year for the graphics and improved bouncing boob effects.
I've been a huge VF fan since the first one was released in the arcades, although, I'm not the best of players. You ask "what is so appealing of the series?" and what I have to say is the precision of the gameplay that you can't get in any of the other 3D fighting games, you have to be a pretty serious fan of the fighting game genre to understand that. Judging a game better than another game just because it has fatalities? That's total BS because that's just eye-candy and it not even integral to any parts of the actual fighting mechanics. Also, VF has counters, had them since VF1 in fact. It's just that the counter system is not over simplified like in DOA with a single button press. VF also did unconventional stages and sizes with VF3, it was fun but got old pretty fast along with the dodge button... It's too bad though that the innovation that VF5 brought isn't as impactful to the console market. The innovation that VF5 brought was VFTV, where you can watch matches from any other arcades in the arcade you were at. Sadly, this never left the arcades of Japan.
DOA (4) has one of the most complex fighting mechanisms , the window for countering is very little and is more on the offensive side. It looks pretty, granted, but the insane combo's , expanding and interactable enviroment, and then even the characters with classes of speed, strength, and even tricky are all awesome aspects of gameplay. So why? Framerate??? ... is that your biggest peeve out of all this?
VF could add all that shit I just said and not fuck with the mechanics or your '4 frame window'.
Agree on that 2d fighting games are still the better choice. Must have on my list is that fist of the North star game which actually uses the Guilty Gear engine and I'm still hoping for a SF4 maybe i get lucky with SF 20th anniversary cuz that would be much more pleasing than a Chun-li movie.
I've never been a fan of VF. Too blocky IMO. At least with SF, I know I'm playing a cartoon. They're not trying to make it look real, and I'm down with that. I'd much rather have smooth animation with cool new special moves and characters than a prettied up version of the same ol'.
The same can be said of almost any genre. Almost every sports game ever made is a rehash of the same game. *cough* madden *cough*. Even the fps genre is getting old. Theres only so many times i can shoot an alien/soldier with a pistol/machine gun/shotgun before I get bored.
precise, I agree, but at least there's more to do in those other games and places to explore. In these generic fighting games, it's pretty much all the same, just a different coat of paint.
The steep learning curve has been the driving force for the VF series. Easy enough to button mash for a few rounds then kick your ass later. This brings it into a darwinian level with only the strong surviving. Those that have already attained that peak will only want to play others that are just as strong. This game is purely for the hardcore and thats who sega markets the VF series for. Comparing games like DOA to VF is the same as comparing Daytona USA to Gran Turismo. Each game has their market and if you're in that market, you'll be hard pressed to see what's so good about the other.
Depends how you look at it, Virtua Fighter and Tekken have a deep learning curve. It take you a while before you can pull of all the fancy moves, thats where the exploring is in these kind of games. If you wanna bash buttons your better of with DoA.
Oh yeah, there's also the small RPG aspect of the game with its personal ranking system. Also unlockable costumes and accessories, but those are just icing.
The thing that appeals to me about VF is that the fighting is the most realistic amonst other fighter series. The only things that are really exaggerated are jump height and impact of hits, but other then that, the moves are all pretty much real. When you play VF, your actually doing martial arts.
What appeals to me about soul calibur, and DOA? the highly exaggerated style and ... boobs. The boobs are f'in great.
Honestly though, I've owned all the games in the tekken, doa, soul calibur, and vf series. They're all pretty good games, it just depends on my mood as to which I'll play.
If a game truly sucks, say like....the man game for example, then I can see people griping about it. But honestly, any other punches one my take is just a microcosm of the same fanboy bullshit you see happening with 10 year old kids takin' popshots at each others consoles.
someone just tried to tell me how you have to know how every pixel/animation works to play this game and that button mashing wont work at all unless you are playing another button masher.
after watching this...*yawn* yeah it looks good and that snow efffect was sweet.
On top of it looking pretty, how about the fact that it's coming to the 360? Suddenly, the PS3 is losing that momentum. Oh wait, it wasn't that sudden...
Why do people think this looks good after seeing it in motion? Soul Calibur seems to be one of a kind in fighting games to be one of the very few that actually has fluid movement... DOA and this game have that jerky animation with the kicks and such
Yes Summa, this game is exactly the same as it was on the saturn, just now with nicer textures
"Can someone please explain why these games are so appealing, still?"
Um....how about hot asian chicks kicking the shit out of faggety looking Euro guys. What else could you want?
Seriously, why hasn't anyone mentioned godhand in this equation? Sure it's a single player experience, but the fighting is fricking sweet, especially when combined with the leveling systems and combo purchases. Ok, so its not "next" gen but damn it's fun as hell.
VF5 is exactly what next-gen shouldn't be, which is the same game with simply better graphics. I swear the movements and the gameplay look almost exactly like the original virtua fighter which looked like it had a total of 4 polygons per character.
KoF > all fighter. the last one just came out and now we can declare fighting games dead.
As much as i loved VF 4, this one looks like a pretty version of it, and actually lacking some of what made it great to begin with.
And lastly, to all of you haters, :what makes a fighter?", you cannot tell me you love to beat the fuck out of something from time to time, be it your friend of the computer.

looks good, but man too bad they cant really add anything worthwhile to a fighting game

A VERY DULL SPORK.
Virtual Fighting Boobies FTW.
