If a recent Games Rader hands-on preview of the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 is to be believed, the game is looking better than it ever has. Writer Christian Nutt (har har) raved about his time with the game, saying it looked as good, if not better, than the already released PlayStation 3 game.
Today, Sega released a few new screens of the game and well, it looks ... not that bad. It doesn't look that great either, so what's up?
This could be a case of poor screen grabs, or maybe these are screens taken from an early build of the game. I'm willing to withhold early judgement, but the PlayStation 3 version Virtua Fighter 5 was an early showcase of the graphical power of Sony's system; I guess I expected to be more impressed.
So what do you guys think? Looking better or worse? And based on what you know about the game (and what you're seeing here), are there any Xbox 360 owners who are busting open their piggy bank to pre-order Virtua Fighter 5?
Wasn't there a comparison a couple weeks ago (I think Gametrailers did it) where they did a direct video comparison, and the results were completely inconclusive?
But on the other hand, the only real "next gen" fighter out now is DOA4 which I'm not that big a fan of either (for the same reasons actually) and Def Jam: Icon is an abortion, so I might give it a try. I'm hoping for a demo though...
I may be mistaken, but I think VF5 lacks online play on X360 as well.
@namelessted
Developers that take pride in the fighting game they make? I unno just a guess. Lag butchers good fighting games, its not an acceptable loss to me (nor the VF5 developers) but meh ;)
@aex
It isn't so much that lag destroys fighting games, this we know, but it's nice to have the option there anyhow. People who are truly serious with the game and it's timing are either playing it in arcades, or local on their system anyway. However, casuals and people just looking to have fun could benefit from a sort of online versus. It's just a matter of choice, and my leaving it out, they're eliminating that choice.
But, I'm off my soapbox, I'll be getting it, online play or no :)
Really? Well, fuckbunnies.
Since this very, very tactical kind of play is essentially what makes VF what it is, I don't begrudge the developers for not including a component that what compromise the nature of the game. It's meant to be played a certain way--anything else, and it ceases to be VF.
@ jamisu: I second Skylance's above post. It's easily one of the top-tier fighters out there. You just sound ignorant if you put it on the level of DOA.
Now what really boggles my mind is that I thought that the japanese/asia wasn't getting the 360 version released but the screen caps have the "10th dan" stuff all in kanji.
Two more thing... Sega, please release a HG stick for the 360 and please let us bring our characters to other xboxes via memory card or xboxlive and not do what you did with the ps3!!!
is it just me or is everyone in those screen shots covered with a shit load of oil? wtf?
least my ps3 version has... you know... GOOD lighting...
and the only differences between the b version and the revision c version will be AI modifications. and a game like this isn't where you fight computers. it is the human to human combat.
@ calpis, there is a ton of kanji in the American version ps3 game. It's just a port... spending the time to remake the menus in japanese isn't worth the paltry sales it would get in japan(360's sell like fried shit over there)
I really wanted to be buying both because of something new they'd do with the 360 version, but its the same damn game. ooh you changed the AI? wonderful, I've already beaten the game on my ps3! oh and you can use your analog sticks now. please do people, so that If I am ever sitting next to you on a 360 somewhere I'll rape your ass with d-pad control.
virtua fighter is definitely a hardcore fighter. people that just expect to flail on buttons and win should stay away. people that have been playing fighters since they were small children should buy immediately. the game is fucking awesome and if you do need to choose between the ps3 and 360 version... the 360 version is superior. ps3 got it six months early... 360 gets it now with better AI... and optional analog control.
Also from what I have heard, Soul calibur does not have as deep gameplay as DOA, tekken, VF or SSBM
Skylance answered it for me :) Some (if not most) should have an online component, but when the online component severaly degrades the quality of the game, I feel it should be left out. This is one of those cases. Thank god, Sega realized this. DOA4, works fine, because well, its DOA. Bomberman (I CAN'T WAIT!), sure thing :) Oh man, If they release a Final Fantasy Tactics with online play I'd be all over that, but somethings shouldn't be lessened to make it appeal to everyone. Many games have been compromised to appeal to a wider audience, and we have seen how most of those end up.
Because it gets the biggest tournaments and the biggest payouts, head over to doacentral.com and check out the scene you might be suprised. The problem with VF, there isn't enough people playing against each other regularly because of the lack of online and the decline of the arcade scene (outside of Japan).
