If a recent Games Rader hands-on preview of the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 is to be believed, the game is looking better than it ever has. Writer Christian Nutt (har har) raved about his time with the game, saying it looked as good, if not better, than the already released PlayStation 3 game.

Today, Sega released a few new screens of the game and well, it looks ... not that bad. It doesn't look that great either, so what's up?

This could be a case of poor screen grabs, or maybe these are screens taken from an early build of the game. I'm willing to withhold early judgement, but the PlayStation 3 version Virtua Fighter 5 was an early showcase of the graphical power of Sony's system; I guess I expected to be more impressed.

So what do you guys think? Looking better or worse? And based on what you know about the game (and what you're seeing here), are there any Xbox 360 owners who are busting open their piggy bank to pre-order Virtua Fighter 5?

These shots are way too low res to tell much of anything. And, really, with a game like this, seeing it in motion is the real test.

Wasn't there a comparison a couple weeks ago (I think Gametrailers did it) where they did a direct video comparison, and the results were completely inconclusive?

It is kind of strange that none of the next gen systems launched with a fighter this time around. That's kind of been a tradition. Hell, my group still plays Tekken Tag from time to time.

I got the PS3 version. I hope this one is improved enough for me to pick it up...again. Screenies don't look good, but they have a few more months to clean it up.

yeah, its too bad that the characters look like action figures. Maybe its just me, but I don't like games that look like they covered everything with wax.

Virtua Fighter is rad, but I require a fighter you can get through by button-mashing.

I'm a big fan of fighters but I've never really been a fan of Virtua Fighter. I don't know if it's the generic characters or just the feel of it, but I could never get into it.

But on the other hand, the only real "next gen" fighter out now is DOA4 which I'm not that big a fan of either (for the same reasons actually) and Def Jam: Icon is an abortion, so I might give it a try. I'm hoping for a demo though...

Virtua Fighter 5 almost made me buy a PS3. I decided to wait for the 360 version so I could get online play via Xbox Live. Even if it doesn't look as good as the PS3 version, I'm more than peachy as long as it plays perfectly.

The 360 version will not have Xbox Live vs. play.

what? no online play? Is the developer fucking retarded? Who the fuck makes a game for the 360 and leave LIVE play out of it when teh main focus of the game is MULTIPLAYER? bunch of idiots the people are that make VF

I may be mistaken, but I think VF5 lacks online play on X360 as well.

I'll get it, cuz I need a good fighter for my 360. It doesn't look much better graphically than VF4, but it's Virtua Fighter, so yeah, pre-order etc.

Nick, curse you! You beat my previous post!

@namelessted

Developers that take pride in the fighting game they make? I unno just a guess. Lag butchers good fighting games, its not an acceptable loss to me (nor the VF5 developers) but meh ;)

I thought it looks much better then VF4 (at least on PS3...but I think the 360 version should look better, the 360 does have a more powerful graphics chip)

I will sound totally weaksauce saying this...but I can never really get into the VF games. I can never be bothered learning the intricacies of the fighting system. Give me a 2D fighter with explicit moves and I'm happy. HADOUKEN!

Screenshots look butt...but I'm sure the game will look fine.

@aex

It isn't so much that lag destroys fighting games, this we know, but it's nice to have the option there anyhow. People who are truly serious with the game and it's timing are either playing it in arcades, or local on their system anyway. However, casuals and people just looking to have fun could benefit from a sort of online versus. It's just a matter of choice, and my leaving it out, they're eliminating that choice.

But, I'm off my soapbox, I'll be getting it, online play or no :)

Anyone who's actually GOOD at 3D fighters will know why they left out multiplayer. Leave that for the bad ones like DOA and Soul Calibur.
Skylance's Avatar
Skylance at 05/12/2007 02:39
Regarding the lack of Live play, it really has to do with the style of the two fighting games. VF has always been about precision, precision, precision. Well, I suppose all fighters ultimately hinge on it, but in VF, how just one or two frames of animation are used can determine a match; it's extremely unforgiving, especially with its reversals. DOA is more about combo after combo, and the counter windows are comparatively much, much wider. Soul Calibur is kind of in the middle--more strategy than DOA, more laid back and faster than VF.

Since this very, very tactical kind of play is essentially what makes VF what it is, I don't begrudge the developers for not including a component that what compromise the nature of the game. It's meant to be played a certain way--anything else, and it ceases to be VF.

Also, Jamisu? <grinning> You're fully entitled to your opinion, I know, but I hope you get spleen cancer; Soul Calibur is fucking *awesome*.

@ Aex: Not going to argue that there's lag, but don't you think it should be there as an option for the non-hardcore players who just want to have a little online fun? Then again, I guess Virtua Fighter is more targeted towards that hardcore niche.

@ jamisu: I second Skylance's above post. It's easily one of the top-tier fighters out there. You just sound ignorant if you put it on the level of DOA.

Please, no more people saying "WTF? NO ONLINE?!? DIE SEGA!!" It has been known since they announced a 360 version of the game was coming out.

Now what really boggles my mind is that I thought that the japanese/asia wasn't getting the 360 version released but the screen caps have the "10th dan" stuff all in kanji.

Two more thing... Sega, please release a HG stick for the 360 and please let us bring our characters to other xboxes via memory card or xboxlive and not do what you did with the ps3!!!

Well the 360 version will be different since it's the Version C update. If that includes graphical updates, well, your guess is as good as mine.

*eaits for michiyoshinko to chime in on the game he thinks will be 90000x better on the 360*

is it just me or is everyone in those screen shots covered with a shit load of oil? wtf?

least my ps3 version has... you know... GOOD lighting...

and the only differences between the b version and the revision c version will be AI modifications. and a game like this isn't where you fight computers. it is the human to human combat.

@ calpis, there is a ton of kanji in the American version ps3 game. It's just a port... spending the time to remake the menus in japanese isn't worth the paltry sales it would get in japan(360's sell like fried shit over there)

I really wanted to be buying both because of something new they'd do with the 360 version, but its the same damn game. ooh you changed the AI? wonderful, I've already beaten the game on my ps3! oh and you can use your analog sticks now. please do people, so that If I am ever sitting next to you on a 360 somewhere I'll rape your ass with d-pad control.

virtua fighter is definitely a hardcore fighter. people that just expect to flail on buttons and win should stay away. people that have been playing fighters since they were small children should buy immediately. the game is fucking awesome and if you do need to choose between the ps3 and 360 version... the 360 version is superior. ps3 got it six months early... 360 gets it now with better AI... and optional analog control.

You guys should realize that DOA4 is actually the top tournament fighting game because it has online play as well as deep gameplay. If VF5 had online play I am sure it would be more popular and also played at more higher profile tournements. It doesn't matter if there is some lag, at least it shows that the developers are willing to advance the genre and bring the game to a wider audience.

Also from what I have heard, Soul calibur does not have as deep gameplay as DOA, tekken, VF or SSBM

@Necros

Skylance answered it for me :) Some (if not most) should have an online component, but when the online component severaly degrades the quality of the game, I feel it should be left out. This is one of those cases. Thank god, Sega realized this. DOA4, works fine, because well, its DOA. Bomberman (I CAN'T WAIT!), sure thing :) Oh man, If they release a Final Fantasy Tactics with online play I'd be all over that, but somethings shouldn't be lessened to make it appeal to everyone. Many games have been compromised to appeal to a wider audience, and we have seen how most of those end up.

Nope they are spending all their money and time preordering Halo3. I wonder how many original XBOX owners were tricked by gamestop employees into preordering it. "Hey dude, you should preorder halo3" Re:"i dont have a 360" GS: "that's ok, you'll want to buy one by the time this games out dude".

@jkh13 - Sorry if this comes out mean or harsh... but what world do you live in that considers DOA4 a very tournament worthy game? Tekken and Soulcalibur have a higher tournament base than most any other 3d game. Just because you can play it on xbawks live, doesn't mean it can hold a candle to the others. But event he highest 3d doesn't compair to SF3:3S, CVS2, GG, MvC2 or HSF2.

Because it gets the biggest tournaments and the biggest payouts, head over to doacentral.com and check out the scene you might be suprised. The problem with VF, there isn't enough people playing against each other regularly because of the lack of online and the decline of the arcade scene (outside of Japan).
