Violence, unoriginal games make Pokemon director 'sad' photo

Pokémon Black/White director Junichi Masuda is saddened by this year's E3 offerings, citing a lack of originality and an overabundance of violence.

"This year, FPS war games were trend!! A lot of splatter scenes!! Blood spread everywhere. Shooting a lot, killing a lot," he said with a charming amount of broken English. "The game developer seems get used to 'kill' the target. Therefore, I felt 'how to kill' became a focus of developing game. For that reason, target become zombie and alien ...

"These targets' savage attack and human counterattacks ... It became savage contents and you never know. Mmm ... It is the player who choose the game to play. As a game creator, it is little sad! Majority of the games look like a same game. There were little of original games. I felt a sense of crisis with above part."

He might have a point, but you could argue the Pokémon series is about forcing animals into brutal bloodsports and has repeated itself about four times. So, let's just say everybody's to blame here.

38 games in the Pokemon series. He's crying about unoriginality.

Really?

What? It's not as though pokemon games don't sell well.

Junichi can lament all he likes but it comes off a little silly when his games are mega popular and have no doubt made him a fortune.

@Tristrix: To be completely honest, the Pokemon Games have made major strides in their design philosophy, so much so that anyone who says Pokemon Red is the same as Pokemon Black is lying.

But yeah, dude's making kid friendly cock fights. I think that's a bit more disturbing.

It would be for the best, really, if the zombies and aliens merely fainted after you shot them full in the face with a rocket launcher.

Alright, no argument here but the comparison between Pokemon Red and Black is about as intellectually honest as a comparison between Bioshock Infinite and Battlefield 3. Red and Black both have little monsters that fight each other. Bioshock and BF3 both have guns in them. That's about as far as the comparison goes.

The guy is just leaving himself WAAAAY open to a reversal of his own shitty logic.

Listening to the Pokemon director complain about unoriginal games is like listening to the Republicans complain about the ballooning debt and government spending.

At least Pokémon is his game. The fact that he is complaining about is that EVERYONE ELSE seems to be making the same game.

As others have said, cries of unoriginality coming from the dude who makes Pokemon is hilarious. I also like how in the last couple years Japanese game developers have been complaining about the flood of FPSs, but they never complained about the constant and near-identical JRPGs that come out of Japan.

Killing is the basis of almost every game. Fact.

However, FPS's are getting tiring. Because most of them ARE the same. Gone are the days of original shooters like Goldeneye and Metroid Prime.

lol unorginality, he should get into making the Pokemon look decent again.

Almost all of the Pokemon in Black/White look absolutely hideos, in the way it's going, in my mind, he doesn't deserve money for these aborminations.

And Junichi didn't create Pokemon, anyone onvolved into creating the Black/White Pokes is a noob, so STFU before I slap you!

Nothing wrong with killing in a game, it's a fact of life anyways. Not all games are family friendly and for kids, despite what most Nintendo themselves out to be.

There were definitely a lot of shooters at E3, but it's been like this for awhile now. Still, there were a good amount of original games at E3 I'd say.

It is funny to hear him speak up against violence , the only reason nothing dies in pokemon is because of video game logic.

Dialga used Draco meteor

Bidoof fainted??
No bidoof is a stain on the floor I just dropped meteors on your ass.

Ever used toxic on something, yeah hey I gotta fight this battle out just chill in your ball despite the fact that you were just hit with what is apparently the worlds worst poison ever and your dying. No there won't be any permenant damage.

Electrode used selfdestruct. Electrode fainted.

How you just blew the fuck up and one yellow revive crystal later and your fine ?!?!?!

But the logic allows me to do awesome things so I don't care.

People cry for originality, but let's see what sells more: an original game like Catherine or this year iteration of COD.

We will have original games the day WE start buying original games instead of the same ones.

What's original about spewing out 30 Pokemon games with pretty much the dame characters, plot, ans setting?

Or 20 street fighters.

Or the countless Mario, Zelda or Mario mart games.

Bye bye Japanese devs,we had a good run together but alas it seems your time is up.

You can't just spit out a game name and expect everyone to enjoy it though. I've been playing through Catherine and have been pretty disappointed in both the gameplay and the quality of the writing. Given the choice between Catherine and a very polished sequel to a game I already love, (not COD, I have no love for that franchise) I'd take the sequel because Catherine takes all of its potential and squanders it. I'm all for supporting new ideas, but at the same time we shouldn't have to support average or bad games just so we could theoretically see good games in the future.

Unfortunately originality is dying in the games industry, the same way that laks originality in movies, and when a game like Shadow of The Damned make like 30,000 copies on two consoles combined is really hard to make original games and win some money on it. And the killing is normal, everyone likes to kill things, people, buildings, animals and each other

I love Shadows of the Damned, but I don't see how Resident Evil 4 but with a great sense of humor is original. I haven't gotten too far yet though, so maybe the game undergoes some radical changes later on.

Lol the games industry has never had originality in the mainstream. First it was space shooters and virtual tennis, then side scrolling platformers and JRPGs, then more JRPGs, then early 3D platformers, then late 3D platformers, then First Person Shooters.

Each generation has a trend, and you'd have to be a dumbass not to acknowledge that "the good old days" were just as shitty and piss-filled as "these days".

Of course, each generation also has its gems (Asteroids, Pong, SMB, Ys, Valis, Doom, Chrono Trigger, Conker, Ratchet and Clank, Bioshock, and countless others.)

I don't think that's a jap dev exclusive problems. How many repetitive shooters are one the market, as well as western RPGs with dialoge that consists of good answer, evil answer and inbetween answer.

Repetitism is just part of the industry period.

Mindless FPS games are unoriginal, I agree. But so is every Pokemon game since the first one. Originality only in the new Pokemon, but the game feels and plays like every other before it.

When you shoot someone with a gun in an FPS, it should make them faint. Carry lots of full revives soldiers!

I'd say catching small animals against their will and forcing them to beat the living shit out of each other for amusement until one of them 'faints' is just as violent as shooting people in the face.

He isn't complaining about certain developers rehashing stuff like he has with Pokemon. He's saying too many companies make the same exact type of game instead of doing their own thing. The people arguing that Pokemon is unoriginal sound really foolish in this case, as that doesn't even relate to what he's saying.
