Violence in games doesn't translate to real violence photo

I am a murderer. I have killed countless thousands. I’ve randomly beaten a woman on a public street with a golf club while citizens watched. I killed her with it, and then proceeded to stomp on her corpse. I did it so I could get money. No one called the cops. If they had called, it wouldn’t matter. I would have just killed them as well.

Yesterday, I killed a man with a rifle. It took several more shots than what I wish it would have, but it felt gratifying when the deed was over. In fact, my peers were happy that I did it. Together, we learned that killing equaled success.

A few days ago I split a man in half with a chainsaw. I hid behind the side of a building and watched my victim stumble to my position. I knew he didn’t expect me. I became a hunter, and the person my prey. As the engine revved and jagged metal chain tore through skin I felt nothing. No remorse or pity entered into my mind. It was business, even when his viscera spilled all over my body and the ground beneath us as we danced the fatal dance.

I’ve brokered deals with devils, I’ve served dark lords, and I have willingly joined the dark side. When I was younger I stomped on insects, beat stray dogs with bats. I’ve knocked men into pits of spikes. I’ve stood behind desks blowing zombies’ heads to bits. I’ve also used a lawnmower to accomplish that task as well. I have willingly used psychotic drugs to kill the pain. I’ve even been the future of humanity’s suffering. Why would I do all of this? Because I think it’s fun.

Recently, the Grand Theft Auto series has once again come under fire. At this point in the series, it doesn’t even seem to correlate with each new release. The game has consistently been blamed for humanity’s woes. In Thailand, the game has been pulled off of its shelves due to the violence of a teenager. The kid robbed and killed a 54-year-old taxi driver with a knife. He admitted to authorities that he killed the man because of a desire to recreate a scene from Grand Theft Auto. Authorities, instantly knowing what’s best for a populace, removed the game so murder will never again happen in their streets.

It doesn’t stop there. In Sweden, a park ranger is blaming the destruction of his plants on the game. A few days ago, in Georgia, three teenagers were arrested for bombings. They claimed that the Molotov cocktails that they used to obliterate cars were the direct result of Grand Theft Auto teaching them how to create the bomb.

Like I said, I am a murderer, a thief, and a ne’er-do-well at the drop of a hat. I do whatever bidding a voice tells me through the TV. I do it because it’s fun and exciting. I do it for competition. I kill in videogames because I enjoy doing it with my friends. Where is my slice of the corruption pie? Why haven’t I decided to do something terrible? It is because I can separate fantasy and reality.

I don’t want to shove the above stories under one hood. In Thailand, the officials certainly think that Grand Theft Auto (and probably all violent videogames for that matter) are the root of society’s evils. Certainly, the Swedish park ranger thinks it to be. I don’t know if the authorities in Georgia are as willing to buy these idiot kids’ story. Regardless, Grand Theft Auto has nothing to do with depravity. These acts of violence are the direct result of the decisions that these people choose to make. It’s been said countless times before in a long list of editorials by the games industry, but it needs repeating for the unconvinced of the world. Videogames are not the enemy.

Why do people choose to do the things they do? Who the hell really knows? Blaming things on violent videogames is not the answer though. I’ll admit that games like Grand Theft Auto or Gears of War may have the propensity to give an ill individuals ideas, but these cats are already toast. Some other flame has burned them before fantasy indoctrinated them.

Frankly, it pisses me off that these sick pricks are the ones that really give games publicity. How much of the general public would know about what can be accomplished in Grand Theft Auto if it wasn’t for exceptionally terrible people blaming the game for their misconduct? If Jack Thompson didn’t start beating his drum in the States, would most know what could be done? I know why politicians choose videogames to be their whipping boy. It’s convenient and an exceptionally easy way to place blame with a constituency that hasn’t seen anything since Pong blew onto the scene. Politicians know that youth doesn’t vote, so who cares if you claim videogames corrupt? It sounds good on TV.

It's hard to tell if this spiral will ever end. There will always be terrible people that have the propensity to do evil things. As videogames push as a medium, they will only become more popular and therefore easier to target. Perhaps this will all end when we’re officially “grown up.” When we’re the news anchors, reporters, policemen, politicians, or even president. One can only hope. Until then though, get your real-world violence out of my fantasy violence, assholes. You choose to do these terrible things because you are a worthless, shit-witted individual. Now, if you’ll allow me, I’m going to go back and have fun hacking some guy’s head off.

Taking responsibility for one's actions instead of blaming it on something else? That's crazy talk!

The spiral will end when the game-fearing Christian Right dies off. Then the younger generation that grew up with video games will take over.

Problem solved.

Bullshit.

If I kill someone in Grand Theft Auto, I'm going to drive around the corner, ignoring all traffic, and walk inside, pick up a gun, and walk out. I'll have paid, but I won't actually hand any cash. It just disappears.

Then I go shoot people. And they never die after the first shot, so its okay.

Isn't the average age of gamers like 25-30 or something like that?

I'm 23, have played violent video games since I was 10 or so and I am perfectly normal in every which way, we'll except for my enormous "endowment"...lol

Some 41 year old in the town I live in doused his mom and her dog in gas and lit them on fire and both have died because of their injuries. GTA related? Could be if the sick fuck tries to pawn it off as that as people eat crap like that up and I think they try to hard to find relations between two, totally unrelated, things.

Man said pickle told him to kill BAN pickels!

Can't they do psych evaluations on people as if they truely believe a video game to be real they are screwed in the head no matter waht.

And by people I mean biased politically motivated conservative media studies researchers. Not gamers who can not do anything wrong, except make two posts in a row.

It really is getting beyond a joke. Soon gamers will be eradicated completely to stop all forms of violence

But it seems like every form of evil is brought back to games.

I bet people try blaming the things Hitler did on Pong or what Saddam did on Command and Conquer.

It's just ridiculous

We are seeing more gamers get into mainstream media now who are sticking up for gamers. Like one woman who said she played GTAIV, loved the game and never felt the urge to kill a cab driver

i must have missed the "Put gasoline in bottle, stuff with rags, light on fire, and throw" mission in GTA4, i always just bought mine from the shop or found them at the boardwalk. Maybe that's why I only have 99.5% completion.

Wow, I eagerly wait to see what will be the next big thing to become the knee-jerk scapegoat for which all of society's ills are blamed, once video games have become mainstream enough such that all of this retarded, overblown anti-gaming bullshit finally comes to an end! I'm sure it'll be awesome!

Nice article, my hope too is that when our generation "inherits the earth" as the cliche goes, we won't be complete dumb shits like a lot of "grown-ups" are today. Just because you are older than I am, doesn't mean your smarter.

What makes me laugh is, in games like GTA IV, if you kill people, COPS COME AFTER YOU. Do these asshats forget that part?

So apparently, people learn to kill from GTA, but GTA fails to show the police coming after you.

Also, Custard's Revenge makes me fap ;_; DAMN YOU, VIDEO GAMES!

@AKK: Hey no need to blame Christians or Republicans here (this statement coming from a Christian liberal who plays everything you do). Don't make this political, as party lines and faith have nothing to do with this topic. In other words, there are idiots of all stripes out there hating on games right now, so take it easy.

As for the article, yep, we all know that blaming games is bull and that will one day change as gaming becomes an ever more popular form of entertainment for the masses. One day we will be running this world - well, not me because I prefer shooting aliens more than debating idiots, but - some persons from the generation truly raised on video games will lead this world and when that time comes all of this will blow over like books, movies, music, comics and all of the rest which have been through this before.

So just relax people. Take it in stride, as these are just the birthing pains and they'll be over soon.

AKK that is not the issue its just people that are out of touch with the world. Being a Christian has nothing to do with it. Hell even Amish have power in their work shops. I understand if some parents don't want their kids playing M rated games even if they are of age. They own your ass since you would have nothing with out them. All Your life you owe your parents every thing.

To follow up on thinkfreemind's point, it's not just one end of the political spectrum to blame, nor is it limited to one religion. Remember Hilary Clinton and Joe Liberman? Any politican who thinks they'll gain public favor by playing the "think of the children" card will gladly attack video games.

People will always try and blame someone or something else for their actions. This is a "responsible-less" world. In the early 90's it was rap music, in the 70's it was "those damn hippies", in the 60's it was Elvis Presley. By 2020, who knows what it will be.

@Ratcliff:

It's the Theory of Planned Behavior from the 60's or something. They have added stuff to it over the years but the main theory still holds I think. Basically some studies claim that some of the left tenets can be changed by consuming violent media over a period of time, which is true. But it doesn't have to lead to instant behavioral change if you aren't a psycho who has the intention to cut people up with a Knights of the Round :)

AKK: "The spiral will end when the game-fearing Christian Right dies off."

Who says that all people who buy into this "violent video games = indoctrinated violent behavior" bunk are christian and/or politically right-leaning? You don't have to believe in Jesus to think that every pixel of blood your precious little child sees will bring him or her one step closer to becoming a murderous psychopath.

Granted, a lot of christian right peoples do fall into that category, but by making that statement, you're almost no better than those same whack-jobs who classify all gamers as cold-blooded killers. Stereotypes are stereotypes no matter which group they refer to, and I'd appreciate it if we could discuss this topic without their use.

Umm...In GTA IV the cops come after you for about 3 blocks and then give up. Four minutes later you can go right back to the same street you shot a prostitute in the face and you can walk around like your invisible. You can't even be a cunning criminal cause nobody really gives a shit about you even though you may be the biggest mass murder of the 21st century.

But you know no video game can directly make a sane normal person a psychopath. But I believe long hours of hostility and violence over the course of time will have at least some negative effect on a person's mindset. Of course the video game publishers don't care. They are laughing all the way to the bank.

Unfourntunately this attiude is cyclical, so pretty soon we'll be old folks complaining about the new media that shows up. No man belives that he is responsible for his actions. Look at the Holocaust and any other event where the "I was just doing my job" or "Someone told me to do it" excuses are used.

Just leave the poor horse alone, will you.

Professor Pew made the most insightful comment I've seen about violent video game controversy in a good while.

One reason why this decade-old argument continues to be an issue is because people on both sides of the fence seem to prefer unsubstantiated claims made by people not qualified to know what they're talking about, as opposed to clear statements supported by properly cited, well-documented, scientific data.

Not to mention that governing bodies keep on taking advice from murderers, which is hilariously absurd.

Though he is and will remain a douchebag, Jack Thompson at least made some effort to substantiate his invective, as unclear and shady as said evidence was.
