Violence and Games: The 'Mortal Kombat' murder photo

This incident ought to drum up more rabble-rousing than the Romans cheering for a bloody crucifixion. Surely by now you've read the terrible news about the "Mortal Kombat" murder, in which two teens killed a 7 year old girl they were babysitting by re-enacting the fighting game and using her as a punching bag. They have since been charged with child abuse resulting in murder and are currently being held in custody.

That's the news, plain and simple. This tragic turn of events will not only scar the lives of those involved, but will also have a major impact on the world of gaming, regardless of its fault or lack thereof in the matter. If you want to hear my rant on the topic, follow the jump, but I can't promise I wont sound like I'm on a picket line.

[Via Rocky Mountain News]

So, if you are anything like me, the first thing you thought when you read that headline is "Who the hell still plays Mortal Kombat?" A natural reaction, even in the face of such a evocative and depressing news story.  But it's not a reaction that most adult Americans will share. Most adult Americans will think "When the hell are they going to ban those terrible things, how many more children must die?" Those terrible things, or course, are not stupid teenagers, or liquor stores that sell to minors. Those terrible things are video games.

The fact that these two minors were drunk was not mentioned in the headline.  I'm not saying I think alcohol should be a scapegoat here. Not every drunken teenager commits manslaughter. But the fact that alcohol decreases inhibitions, where Mortal Kombat arguably only affects the human mind in the same ways the average Jean-Claude Van Damme movie does (not much of an effect), it leads me to point the finger at alcohol before anything else.

Even in saying that, I'm dodging the real culprit in this tragedy, and that culprit is of course the 16 year old girl. From the article it is not clear if the male in question had anything to do with the crime. He may become the scapegoat along with video games, or he may be guilty. In one report he was just a "referee" between the older sister and younger sister while they were playing Mortal Kombat. But from an eyewitness report (implying that there were more people with the babysitter and the guy during the assault), he bragged that his hands were "lethal weapons" and that he kicked the 7 year old girl. Can this eyewitness be trusted?

Regardless of if he did or didn't hit the little girl, the 16 year old sister was still the one babysitting her. If my best friend in the whole world, my biggest idol in the entire universe, or even Ron Workman laid one finger on my 7 year old sister, I would not only kick him out of my house immediately, I'd probably call the cops. So whether the male was involved at all, the sister is still the one that I blame. Letting someone beat your little sister to death is the same as doing it yourself.

But who wants to blame a beautiful teenage girl for such a terrible crime? Our society is desperate to hold on to those intra-psychically entrenched schemas, those "black and white" absolute perceptions of our world that are supposed to help us make sense of a reality filled with more horror than we can accept. One of the schemas that many people in our world hold on to is "Pretty teenage girls are good."  I have witnessed more blind worship of pretty teenage girls for simply being pretty teenage girls than I have ever witnessed video game induced violence, video game induced seizures, or any video game induced problems of any kind.

Facts like that don't integrate very well with another schema that many adults share. That schema is that video games are the devil. Or more like "Everything that's different than what I grew up with is the devil." That of course includes video games.

So how does our society deal with a news story detailing a pretty teenage girl killing her little sister? My bet is that society will hold tight to the safe and comforting ideas discussed above. It takes a very strong, intelligent, and fair minded person to put aside those comforting but thought distorting perceptions of the world and look at the terrible truth. This newspaper couldn't. It resorted to blaming Mortal Kombat. I couldn't at first.  I instinctually blamed alcohol. And the police, well, we'll have to see who they blame.

I'll be watching this story like a hawk to see if either of these kids end up in jail. If the powers that be at Dtoid permit, you can be sure to read more about it from me here on the front page.

This is a non-issue. The media can put whatever spin on this they like, nothing will come of it. The day we lose our right to violent videogames is, in essence, the day we lose the right to choose the stimuli that enter our brain (aka thought police). The industry might take a blow due to over-protective parents, but it will never decrease the demand for what they provide. We as a gaming community should take one simple method of action - until they start restricting our liberties, chill out and let the lawyers fuss over moot points. But when they come to our doors and confiscate our copies of GTA, we'll come out guns blazing.

I wasn't talking about destructoid readers in particular, but about gamers in general. I apologize if I gave the impression that I blamed destructoid readers for the behaviour of gamers in general.

does the media understand the fact that you have to be pretty fucked up in the head to beat on a 7 year old? fuck those motherfuckers, fuck their parents, fuck the people that did nothing to help that little girl when they knew she was getting beaten, and fuck the media for being so pathetic, worthless, and talentless that they can do nothing but sensationalize a tragedy by spinning it out control. i think this calls for a good old fashioned stoning.

If you read the Denver post article, it seems like this isn't the first time the 7 year old was abused. According to the article, she would ride her bike at 8 pm because "she didn't want to go home." I really feel sorry for her and hope she's in a better place, because she had a pretty shitty family.

Dammit, what happened to tickling your siblings if you wanted to torture them?

Trujillo and Garcia aren't white names (if they are, then Metallica's new bass player is the tannest dude ever). Anyway, that's beside the point. They're right to lead with the picture of the guy because, as stated yesterday, he's the one who ninja'd the 7-year-old to death and he's got a history of beating on the little girl. It's not a race thing; in any story where a child dies and there's a male anywhere in the same room, they show his picture.

Yeah these news stories are about 90% speculation and jumping to conclusions and 10% actual fact. Video games really had little or nothing to do with this crime. The media probably just needed a quick buzz word to use in order to describe two teens beating up a little girl with pseudo martial art moves. What came to mind first? Oh yeah, those notoriously violent games of the mid 90s that had to do with fighting and is recognizable to most people (while actually not a very notable IP today) in the US. Not to mention these kids are way too old to fall into the "teh video gamez made me do it" category. If they do, then they need to spend the rest of their lives in an asylum. I hate the sheep mentality of the US.

To those of you that reacted in a violent way to this news, i.e. "they should be killed/stoned/et cetera," please try not to voice your opinion in this way, as you know, it only gives fuel to the people you're angry at, specifically the more rabid elements of the news media.

I can just see a journalist out for blood actually reading a gaming news site and saying "See?! See?! They ARE violent!"

If that ever happened I would facepalm so hard my skull would cave in.

On topic, though, all signs point to this being two teenagers that had problems to begin with, I'm guessing resentment issues on the part of the girl. It really does sound like two people that committed a crime and blamed, in the teenage way, it on the first thing they could think of.

Mortal Kombat? Really, come on.

Fucking media bullshit. Unbelievable. I can't believe they're just going to gloss over the past abuse, the alcohol, and the lack of parental supervision. They'll just go straight for the gaming industry.

Fucking cowards. They're afraid to accept that some people are just not right in the head. Afraid to call out the shitty parents. Afraid to accept the reality of our world.

Oh, and the death penalty is too good for these two. That's the easy way out. There is no Hell waiting for them. They deserve to rot in prison for life. Not 16 to 48 years, LIFE. And hopefully get beaten/stabbed/raped regularly. THAT is the closest thing to Hell we've got, people.

I think everybody agrees that this is incredibly fucking shitty, but LKM does have a point in that we're desensitized to this kind of thing by playing video games.

Note that I'm saying desensitized and not so morally bankrupt that we'd kick a seven year old child in the head.

10BobMarleys made a good point earlier in that if he were a lawyer, he'd be turning over the kids house looking for a console of some sort. This story's got the scent of laywer and pass-the-buck all over it.

Any word on whether good old JT's left the Jackcave in the Jackmobile yet?

Why are those two news reports so different from each other? Racism?

We really don't need to bring race into this... not yet anyway. Once the girl gets acquitted, then we can talk about that.

What we need to do now is stop making fucking tasteless jokes about the little girl so the uninformed masses don't think we are as callous as we are made out to be.

This is a dumb story and everyone knows it. There will be some people out there who freak out but I have to be honest here, I dont know any parents who think video games are a negative experience for kids and considering the console sales statistics for this Christmas so far, the majority of the US feels the same.

Destructoid is a bit hysterical about these bits of news if you ask me. That story was all over the news when I woke up and it seems to be so huge that I cant even find it anymore to re-read...

This is a terrible story, but once again, we see ignorance in the media. We have a scapegoat, blame it. Even if it turns out to have nothing to do with it, the person, place or thing mentioned forever has a black eye because the public only remembers when you're accused, not when you're freed from those accusations.

As for the story, this is what happens when you don't have anyone with video game knowledge on your staff anymore writing stories. Crecente used to write for them, and I'm sure he probably would've been working with the reporter on this story in some regard.

Well from watching that news video it seems like the "Mortal Kombat" in the title just refered to the kind of horseplay that they were engaging in. I don't know what's worse, actually blaming the game for this, or using it in the news title when it had nothing to do with it. And COMBAT, which is actually how it should be spelled here, is spelled like it is in the game, KOMBAT. Shame on the news for that.

Also from the article..."They also cracked open an egg and put it in her mouth to make sure Garcia was not "messing with them." The hell is that? That is what you came up with to see if someone is "messing with you?" The girl was 7, and I'm sure she was tickleish, just tickle her damn feet or something if you are unsure. Or if you are an educated teenager, check her fn pulse. And they didn't call the cops for 15 mins because they didn't want to get in trouble for "teenagers watching a kid." Um is that a crime? I know a few teenage babysitters and they aren't as dumb as these 2. I watched my sister when I was a teenager, and this kind of stuff didn't happen.

The video only briefly mentions that the guy was "too drunk to tell how hard he was kicking her". That is the only mention of alcohol in the report. No focus on underage consumption, no focus on whether the older sister was drinking with the guy.

What I find so bothersome is that neither of them seem to show any remorse for their actions. Forgetting what the reason/scapegoat is, alcohol, video games etc.

That poor little girl.

I hope they both get convicted and have to serve jail time. I think I remember an episode of Law and Order where something similar happened, where a girl was pregnant and she let her boyfriend beat her to the point where the baby died. She assisted in beating herself, but since he was the guy, he got jail time and she got acquitted. Total bullshit. There was more to the case but that's the main bullet point that makes it related to this.

They should both be prosecuted to the fullest of the law and serve equal jail time. Fuckers.

Yeah even if somehow we all agreed that video games can influence people I don't think there is a single game out there that would make people Martial arts kick and punch the hell out of a 7 year old girl. As a guy who tends to get drunk alot and plays violent video games only once did I ever get into a actual fist fight with a good friend and I never wanted to kill him during it.

Alcohol and video games is just a bullshit excuse to give for the reason of beating a 7 year old to death. I'd put these two in the 8th circle of hell.
