Vigil Games talks scrapped Darksiders ideas photo

Talk about kicking off the new year with some solid videogames. Vigil Games' action-adventure game Darksiders was one of the first major releases of the year, and from the look of it, a bunch of us got a lot of enjoyment from kicking some demon and angel ass.

Over on GameInformer, a collection of user- and staff-submitted questions were presented to Vigil general manager David Adams. It's a really fun read, simply because A) the questions are totally frank and B) it offers some great insight in terms of scrapped ideas. No joke, Darksiders started off hella ambitious.

Adams says it best himself: "When we first conceived of the game, we were completely and utterly insane. Our original incarnation consisted of all four horsemen in full four-player co-op." Such scope was obviously too much to pull off, so they stuck with War "as a sort of introduction to the franchise."

Other ideas that didn't quite come to fruition include more NPCs, increased side-quest content, and less repetitive boss fights in Black Throne. Adams reveals it was an issue of time more than anything else.

"I guess we had a lot of faith in the game. From the very beginning we've always mentally assumed there would be a sequel -- heck, we've mentally assumed that there would be at least three Darksiders. If we were really being practical we would have never tried to start making this game with a team of four guys, none of which had console experience. Practical isn't really our thing."

I think the only logical response to that statement is a firm "hell yeah!" I can definitely get behind more Darksiders. Can you?

Afterwords: Darksiders [Game Informer]

The game was an absolute BLAST. The only hiccup is the short replay value. If this game had four player co-op, or even 2 player co-op, it would be a keeper forever. MAKE IT HAPPEN IN THE SEQUEL, VIGIL!

Game is fantastic, even if I did beat it in like five days (I got every life/wraith crap too).
Fantastic game, I'm going through again on the hardest difficulty. Stil hard to believe how good it is. I feel sorry for people hating on it; it starts slow but quickly becomes one of the best gaming experiences I've had in years.

Time constraints have been an issue for many game developers, unfortunately. This would make a nice video documentary to have included into some kind of bonus package or something.

I had a ton of fun with it, but I was a bit annoyed that after tracking down all those weapon power-ups and buying upgrades, nothing but armor shards carries over to the next play through. I would hardly call it a damning criticism, but I would have at least liked to keep the legendary ones.

I'm all for a sequel to Darksiders :D (Although having read the graphic comic it seems a prequel may be a possibility :o)

This is the first game that I've run out and bought sight-unseen in a long time, and I'm absolutely loving it. I think it speaks well for the game that while I generally only play all of about ten hours of videogames total in an entire month, I spent that much time with just this one game on Friday night. It's awesome. Sure it has its minor flaws, but the game is just pure fun all the same.

So suffice it to say that I'd love to see a sequel. :)

I didn't bother finding reviews or even waiting for a single day before making the decision to buy, not rent, this game. I say with glee that my decision was not one of flaw, and I hope there's more to come.
