Laziness, murder, suicides. Videogames have been linked to all sorts of sin and vice, so what's one more problem to throw on the pile? New "research" (i.e, some people with an agenda asked a bunch of students questions until they got the results they were looking for) shows a link between gaming and gambling, with teenagers who play games apparently more likely to fritter their money away on games of chance.

"If you look at those young people who are classified as pathological gamblers you will find that they do have a higher frequency of involvement with many different types of videogame," says University of Adelaide professor Paul Delfabbro. "They're much more likely to play games on Xboxes and similar consoles. They are also more likely to play arcade games.

"It does suggest that if you're a person who is playing very frequently, more likely if you're a male too, and doing it from you know year after year, it's probably more likely you'll have a pattern of activity which will make poker machines quite attractive when you turn 18."

I love how researchers try and spin these results. It never seems to occur to them that videogames are a hugely popular activity enjoyed by most teenagers, so there's bound to be a correlation between games and most other activities.  Correlation which is not, of course, the same as causation. But try telling these morons that.

I will bet you $50 that videogames do NOT cause gambling.

"It does suggest ... blah, blah" - Professor Paul Delfabbro

I could suggest that you've wasted the time, money and resources of the University of Adelaide by connecting two things because they are both activites enjoyed by people. I could SUGGEST that but why introduce an element of doubt into something so obviously true?

You'd think professor woulda paid more attention in their psychology classes . I mean. I had a whole one last semester for the lulz as an elective, and Correlation =/= Causation was practically drilled into our heads.

The only addiction to gambling that I've ever had is those damn scratch tickets. And I only called it an addiction because I kept winning.

"Alex Blaszczynski is a professor of psychology at the University of Sydney and has studied gambling habits for the past 30 years. He accepts the work but says it’s too much to say there’s a causal link between playing video-type games and ending up gambling."

don't forget to post the counter point of the article Mr. Sterling.

My college roommate from two semesters ago played online poker (not the kind where you gamble real money) and was also half deaf. I think I'll conduct a study to prove that there is a correlation between the two and thus a causation.

People who gamble compulsively, gamble on just about anything. I wonder if Professor Delfabbro loses his mind during the March NCAA tournament.

I used to gamble in middle school, and because I had no money I would would use snes cartidges as currency (an action I GREATLY regret...) Now I realize I had no choice in the matter; Nintendo made me do it! Anyone know a good lawyer?

Videogames lead to anger, anger leads to pudginess, pudginess leads to gambling, and gambling leads to raping babies on an American flag.

let's see the lists of things that "researchers" say are related/caused by videogames:

addiction......check
violence.......check
gambling.......check
murder.........check

yep, it's conclusive, by my research, videogame researchers have a rare variation of down syndrome that is unnoticeable to average people.

"surveyed more than two-and-a-half-thousand teenagers and found more than half had gambled in the past year and two per cent of those had become pathological gamblers by the time they were 18."

So out of 2,500 teenagers that took a SURVEY they found that over 1,250 had GAMBLED at least once in the past and that 50 became compulsive gamblers.

So out of 2,500 random teens they found that 50 were compulsive gamblers. LINK FOUND!!!

That "study" is just biased and a waste of time (of their time too).

What a dumb correlation. I've played videogames my whole life, and I HATE gambling. I like to have complete control over the outcome of the games I play, I don't like leaving things up to "luck of the draw" or whatever. When I lose in a videogame, I like to think it's because of my lack of skill, not because I got unlucky. I would have thought that non-gamers would be more attracted to gambling than gamers for that reason alone.

Wait wait they did a whole study = waste of money. To figure out that 18 year old males are risk takers? Seriously? It's called being human. Wtf is this researcher an alien?

They fail to mention that many obsessive gamblers also like to play catch, read books, sleep in beds and eat food.

Okay, so I read the article linked (unlike most of the commenters here), and to clear things up, the study showed a statistically significant correlation between being a problem gambler and gaming. What this means is that many problem gamblers played games when they were children.

It does not say anywhere that playing games causes problem gambling behavior, and the article even goes on to include another psychologist's viewpoint on it, who even specifically says that this research does not indicate a causal link between gaming as a child and gambling as an adult.

So to everybody who hates on these studies simply because they put gaming in a bad light, please STFU, and maybe even try reading the primary literature, rather than a sensationalized piece from another sensationalized piece, before you go and say the studies are bullshit.

This survey is obviously flawed. I have zero interest in hazzard games like roulette, poker machines & one armed bandits etc. It's boring stuff.

So it's a problem now, rather than back in the days of Casino Kid on the NES? Took long enough.

Granted, Casino Kid made me want to hang out at casinos less for the gambling and more for the bunny girl attendants. But that's beside the point.

Young people play video games. As this number is on the rise, so too as the world's population. Video games causes overpopulation. Oh, and it also causes more reports of female teachers having sex with minors. That's because of video games too.

Hasn't been the first time videogames have got it in the neck because they've been associated with gambling. Remember when Greek politicians ended up banning a lot of game-related stuff because they couldn't tell the difference between videogames and gambling programs?

I was pretty unhappy about that, since it ruined any chance of Greek participation in the World Cyber Games that year.

@Dexter345, Do you have a copy of the research?? Or just the actual linked article??

I find statements like this worrying:
"It does suggest that if you're a person who is playing very frequently, more likely if you're a male too, and doing it from you know year after year, it's probably more likely you'll have a pattern of activity which will make poker machines quite attractive when you turn 18."

I'll admit to not having read the study, but if a Professor is saying this study even suggests this sort of thing, it is total bullshit. This is not a study that can show causal relations. It's like saying most serial killers are men, therefore all men are serial killers.

The study was set up to look at relationships between lifestyle and gambling, the professor should be saying:
"It does suggest that if you're a person who is gambling very frequently, most likely you're a male, and you are likely to enjoy videogaming as a recreational pursuit."

He's come at the statement from the wrong end.

They could have just "studied" bringit.com - then they would have found that ALL gamblers play games! They even gamble on the games!
