Videogames made my baby kill! Stupid mother blames games for son's act of murder photo

Stuart Harling is an 18 year old murderer who was convicted of stabbing nurse Cheryl Moss 72 times. An open and shut case, really -- the guy's a killer and deserves his time in jail. Of course, for the mother of the sicko, it's not that simple. Something other than the guilty party HAS to get the blame, and naturally, she has used videogames as the scapegoat.

"Stuart was 11 or 12 when I bought him the PlayStation. For a long time I didn't even realize games had age limits on them,"  griped idiotic Lorraine Harling, confessing her sheer ignorance. "We'd just buy him the game that all the other kids had. I didn't really know what they were about. I think most parents are the same."

Pathetic dishrag newspaper The News of the World ran a typically sensationalist piece on the murder and its non-existent link to games, capitalizing a ridiculous amount of words for scaremongering effect: "One of baby-faced Harling's favourite games was the notorious Manhunt, where players SLASH and SLICE their victims with meat CLEAVERS, cheese WIRE and CHAINSAWS, or suffocate them with plastic bags." I love how they call him baby-faced, as if to try and claim that Stuart Harling would be a blessed angel were it not for those EVIL games full of WIRE and CHAINSAWS!

"I know these games are played by kids across the world, but some are truly horrific. And if they can cause a trigger to be pulled in someone's head they should be banned," Lorraine added. Yet another young kid goes mental and kills, and yet more excuses are made for him. People wonder why criminals re-offend? We make them feel like they're the poor victims.

[Cheers, Aerox]

Her theory is kind of debunked by her own statement. She'd "just buy him the game that all the other kids had." So did any of those stab a nurse 72 times? Of course fucking not. If "they can cause a trigger to be pulled in someone's head," perhaps some kind of concern could be warranted. But they can't. Just another ignorant person trying to cover up their own mistakes. I sympathise with her, but misallocating blame is going to do no good to no one.

Yet another story from senstionalized media. Got to love the inadequate parents that substitute their failures as caregivers for video games.

I mean, can you really blame this mother? I know when I have children, when I buy them things I'm just going to go into stores, blindfold myself, and randomly throw things into my shopping cart without actually looking at them. I'm also never ever going to watch what they're doing because that might embarrass them. I think once I get married I'll install special walls in my house so that my children and I will never actually have to see each other. I'll just hand them food from a little slot in the kitchen wall.

But i am sick of the scapegoating. really, are people just mindless robots that can be programmed by the tv? music? video games?

I think people should be held for the actions, not their imaginations and fiction. that is how all law should read. fuck the thought police..

My god she's right we should ban ALL video games even though the overall violent crime rate is in decline. But then we'd have to blame rap music. Ban it too! Kids don't need to be hip hoppin around. Hmm whats left? Movies! Ban all them, the writers on strike anyways. Oops now we only have the parents left to blame, Sorry but we are going to have to get rid of you Lorraine, it's for the greater good you know.

Video games aren't to blame here, but I do blame Rockstar for making stupid games like Manhunt which open video games up to this sort of criticism. All the trouble Rockstar has caused the community, between 'Hot Coffee' and the Manhunt 2 debacle, I'm surprised there hasn't been any gamer backlash against them. I won't be buying Grand Theft Auto IV, mostly because I could care less, but also that I'm tired of hearing about Rockstar's shenanigans. They're not helping us with all this 'free speech' and 'we didn't know' bullshit.

If anything, this proves that it's the parents fault that this kid grew up to be crazy enough to kill someone. Sounds like their idea of good parenting was, "leave good enough alone". Not to mention their willful ignorance of what was going on in their son's life. It sounds like they took no interest in what he was interested in, and spent no time with him. For shame that they so badly need a scapegoat.

To make art is artistic, not murder. censorship is lame, if you don't like manhunt, don't buy it, freedom is what this country stands for. And hell, i don't even think kids should be allowed to buy anything. their parents should do all the shopping for them. In every regard.

Seriously, none of this is Rockstar's fault at all. None of this is the fault of horror movies, or evil music either. Even the bible is not to blame for some of the stupid things that people do in the name of their god.

People who murder can be called heros, or psychos, or villians, or all of the above.

Cops kill, Soldiers kill, Presidents sign death warrants, the jails kill. So, are they to blame too? They are the ones who are actually killing. Not the artists, and musicians, and game developers. I call it what it is. People make the choices, they control what their bodies do. They are responsible, not bad parenting, not art.

Children make big mistakes. This is part of growing up. For some its little, for some its huge. I mean it's a shame for those kids to throw away their lives like that.

When someone kills someone else, it means they are beyond liking anything. They are beyond wanting freedom, beyond love. Beyond caring. This goes far deeper than any scapegoat or excuse that people can throw out there..

->Sartorious: I firmly believe anyone who cares about gaming as a medium should be fully behind rockstar. I'm not the biggest GTA fan, and I've never played table tennis or manhunt, but I believe they are pushing an envelope that definitely needs to be pushed if gaming is ever going to be percieved by the population at large as anything more than at worst just for kids, at best an idle timekiller. All of the backlash against them(all of it) is completely unjustified in my opinion, and I think it's a damn good thing that gamers show as much solidarity in their disagreements with it as they do.

Send his ass to the bighouse for life! There is no doubt that we are influenced by what's around us, but regardless of what form that is, whether it's our parents, tv, or video games, it is for ourselves to make the decisions that impact our world. He did it, so he's guilty. How many gamers are there in the world, woman? do you see them all stabbing nurses to death too? It's stupidly naive to think we aren't influenced by media, that's why women cry during chick flicks, they're effected by it. The same naturally is true for video games, or even the freaking newspaper, but it does not remove or make the decision to commit acts. Your eighteen year old son did that all on his own. Your case is dimissed! Be gone!

I should say I agree with everything in the article except the part about why criminals reoffend. (Politics time!)

Criminals don't reoffend because we treat them like victims; in this case only the mom is whining. Criminals reoffend because there is no rehabiliation program whatsoever, and prison is a place filled with uncontrolled organized crime ties. I don't exactly know how prisons are run in the UK, but this is an argument that was made before Parliament:

"People reoffend for three reasons. The first is that they do not have a home to go to on release. Forty per cent. of people leaving prison are homeless, so it is no surprise that they go back to offending. Secondly, their social networks have been disrupted. Some 25,000 inmates are placed in prisons situated more than 50 miles from their homes, while another 10,000 are in prisons more than 100 miles away. It is therefore no surprise that their links with spouses and families are broken. The absence of that communication also leads to serial offending.

The third reason for reoffending is that people leaving prison cannot find employment. Why can they not get work? In part it is because they have been in prison, but the main reason is that they are not educated. Ten per cent. of the total number of people targeted by the Government's numeracy and literacy strategies are prison inmates. They have no opportunities, and I hope and expect that the Government will turn the problem around at its cause."

It's easy to look at super specific cases and say OH LOOK PRISONERS ARE BEING CODDLED AND TREATED LIKE VICTIMS, and that might be true in a very, small percentage of cases. The cases where it tends to happen are ones where super rich people have flagrantly violated the law and cheated tons of people out of money, and then, when they're finally given their ridiculously light sentence they're sent to Country Club State Penitentiary where they get to golf and interact with their families, but with ::gasp:: an ANKLE MONITOR. OH THE INDIGNITY.

You're all full of it. I have definitive proof THAT the copy of Manhunt got out of the Playstation, jumped back IN it's case, found a Crocodile Dundee-style knife (knoife?), tracked that bitch down, and ultimately STABBED her. Stuart "Baby-Face" Harling was going for an innocent evening STROLL when he stumbled upon his wayward Manhunt murDERing a woman. He wrestled with the madgame to try and save the poor nurse. The police arrived to FIND him alone with the corpse and the knife as Manhunt SLYLY made itself inanimate again so that it COULD sneak away unnoticed and leave the poor boy to be FRAMED.

Video games are MURDER!

100% the Mother's fault for not paying attention to the content her child sees. He could have easily seen any of the Saw movies, hardcore porn, Showgirls, any of which are as inappropriate for simple minded children with absent parents. The ESRB puts ratings on games for a reason. My mom made me read books when I was a kid. Can you believe it? Books. Guess what? She actually cared to find out what they were about! A parent approving material their child consumes? That's unheard of! How is it that some parents actually care what goes into the minds of their children while others let tv and videogames raise their kids and act shocked when a kid ends up becoming a psycho. She should be fined, given some jail time, and a psychiatric evaluation following parenting classes.

A. "Manhunt" is called manhunt. It's in the title. It IS the title.

B. Look at the cover art for the game.

C. Look at the back cover of the game, it says in big red letters "THIS IS A BRUTAL BLOOD SPORT"

->Aerox: I agree with you completely about the state of the justice system, but the types of criminals you're talking about tend to be from the poorer echelons of society. That's rarely the case with these school shooters. Normally they seem to be fairly middle class, in decent suburban areas. There's no time to get depressed enough to plan this sort of shit when you have to worry about having enough money to eat and pay the bills. Besides, perps of a murder suicide rarely are repeat offenders.

Criminals often are victims of circumstance. This kid's mother clearly didn't pay enough to him, which was probably a pretty major cause of his anger. Also, being primarily raised by a TV and video games, particularly for a loner, is going to give one seriously fucking skewed world view. Ultimately though a person is accountable for their own actions, and should be punished accordingly. I do believe however that when handing down judgements, the circumstances of the crime should be far more carefully considered than they currently are.
