Videogame critic busted for prostitute fun: Mmm, tasty irony photo

"Like all parents, I know it is increasingly difficult to protect our children from negative influences… we have learned that when self-regulation fails, government must step in… we must do more to protect our children from excessive sex and violence in the media."

These were the words of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer during a 2006 campaign, which were followed by criticism aimed at Grand Theft Auto for its depiction of sex with prostitutes. Spitzer may hate fantasy prostitution, but he seems to love the real thing -- as he was all about the whores until the cops uncovered his dirty business.

The game hating politician was recently busted for his sordid shenanigans, uncovered as "Client 9" to an international prostitute ring. He was caught on a wiretap organizing himself a big fat delivery of paid-for sex, arranging for a lady of the night to travel from New York to Washington, where he was staying. It seems that sex is perfectly dandy if you pay for the act itself, and not a digital representation of it. After all, it was Spitzer who said:

"Media content has gotten more graphic, more violent and more sex-based ... Currently, nothing under New York State law prohibits a fourteen-year old from walking into a video store and buyin ... a game like ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ which rewards a player for stealing cars and beating people up. Children can even simulate having sex with a prostitute ..."

You're right, Mr. Spitzer. Let's not waste $60 pretending to have sex when we can spend an alleged $4300 for the real thing. You lying, hypocritical jackass.

[Thanks to Prof. Pew]

Sorry to fulfill your "anyone who speaks out against games gets jumped on. ANYONE!" theory, but I have to ask...

Why should a 14 year old NOT have GTA? I had GTA 1 when I was 11 or 12, and GTA 3 when I was 14.

...I turned out just fine. I see much more violent things on TV, and ESPECIALLY the internet.

Once they suggest censorship of any kind to "protect the kiddies", the never stop unless you stop them in their tracks. If parents knew what you could see on the internet, they would be shitting their pants screaming about censoring the internet. You can bet on it. :)

Oh, and no...I am not a child. I am 21.

Which means I got through middle and high school while playing GTA the entire time and managed not to run a muck shooting everyone, killing hookers or doing coke.

In fact, I've never committed a crime nor done drugs, drank, smoked, etc in my entire life. GAMING kept me away from such things. GTA in particular, which I used to play for hours a day after school...Every day.

I’m with Loose Nukes. I’ve always been proud to say that I’m a New Yorker, but this story almost made me feel ashamed. Delicious, delicious irony. The crusader who came into office on a platform of weeding out corruption and scandals has now fallen into that himself. He better resign, that’s all I’m going to say.

This is almost as good as Ted Haggard's fall from grace.

You have to love watching 'important people' fuck it all up and try to back peddle out of it. Makes you feel better about your own indiscretions, and how they're not televised.

Rainbowblack:

Yes, they do get jumped on, because they always single out games like they're the worse fucking things on the planet, and try to alter the law to impose their viewpoints on people. I don't think someone should be sent to jail for selling GTA to a teenager. I also don't believe teenagers should be banned outright from violent videogame content. I believe it would be more harmful to a child to completely isolate him/her from the idea of violence until they grow to such a point where they cannot handle the idea of it because they had no opportunity to see it.

It used to be that politicians were to be leaders who made an example for us common folk to follow. Spitzer was heralded as a "buster" when he was running for office. I dunno how many people cheered that finally "this guy will clean things up" here in albany and in the state. Now he goes and makes himself a part of the "problem". I don't think that prostitution is wrong or bad but it is illegal. It's a shame really.

This is fucking hilarious. He deserves everything he gets, the hypocritical prick.

And btw, I do think prostitution should be legal.

@Rainbowblack

There's a difference, a big difference between keeping your own 14 year old kid from buying GTA and the state forcing that decision on you.

Not only that, but that law would affect everyone who buys games -- every store that sells M video games must now educate employees, and I think you would find that due to the legal risks many stores would not carry M games at all.

@Rainbowblack:
I don't think anyone will disagree with you that keeping inappropriate games out of kids hands is a bad thing. The real problems comes from how it is done and to what extent. It's not a simple straight forward task. Let's also not forget that these politicians aren't saying this stuff because it's the right thing to do, they are doing it to get public support and are just appeasing lazy ignorant parents and therefore not helping the gaming industry grow and become more accepted.

I bet they'll still blame video games for this. I can just hear it now "Video games like GTA are so vile that the poor Governor, having been exposed to the mere fact that GTA exists, was corrupted by its evil powers and used a prostitute."

And we all know there was no such thing as hookers until GTA came out...

Are you a shameless hypocrite and/or demagogue? Consider a career in public service!

This is awesome. Good job contributing to excessive sex in the media, governor... perhaps we should pass some governmental regulations on your cock and balls since you have such poor self-control.

Yes I agree that keeping violent games away from children is important, but lets leave that decision up to their parents. For these people supporting the government stepping in to impose some law against it I suppose you are the same people that want the government to raise your kids for you. Americans grow more apathetic and lazy every day. The government knows this and will exploit it for their own gain under the guise of "looking out for the welfare of its citizens." The same way the media invades people's privacy under the guise of "the public has a right to know."

Also, @cjpkiller, it doesn't matter where Jim is from his opinion on this matter is just as valid as yours. A douche like this governor trancends geographical locations.

I'm with Samit, he better resign.

New York politics are a mess, and have been for some time. Spitzer's a jackass well beyond his comments on violent games, and I for one am more than happy to see him go. Plus, he's from North Carolina. Why can't we have people from our own state in high-level government positions?

I'm in Albany right now, and like viralhunter said, this town is going crazy.

It wasn't that long ago that NJ's governor James McGreevey resigned with his wife next to him after he admitted that he had cheated on his wife with a man.

He was a devoted family man and even had commercials running in the state at the time with him and his family promoting safe driving I think it was.

Just feels oddly familiar.

"Why don't go buy a purse you f*cking McGreevey!"
