Video: Xperia play in action

1:35 PM on 02.13.2011   |   Nick Chester

You can't make an announcement without a ton of promotional videos, and Sony Ericsson's covered its butt with the Xperia Play today.

There's a lot of marketing speak and hype here, but also some great information, along with some footage of the device in action. You might even learn a few things. For example, did you know those little empty circle pads where analog sticks should be are actually touch sensitive, and can be used for analog stick-style control?

The Xperia Play is out worldwide next month; Verizon customers in the United States get it first, so consider your contracts carefully.

I'm getting sick of these pretentious Sony commercials.

Seems like a cool piece of tech, but it's not for me I like to keep my phone, mp3 player and gaming systems separate.

Also it seems stupid to boast about having 20 partners especially when most of them didn't look to good.

Not gonna lie, I want one.

But, they better move the Experia Play to sprint phones.

Sony's timing with the phone couldn't be any less convenient.
The technology isn't anything better than the iDevice/Galaxy S/whatever has come out in the past 2 Qs, then by this summer there's going to be a new wave of hardware anyways -- maybe starting the shift to 4G.

At best, this is probably going to entice developers to mobile platforms (and it's nice to see Unity & Unreal up there), but I fear this is going to end up with straight-up iPhone ports to a platform with inferior technology.

FUCK YES!

I can't wait to trade my Droid 1's keyboard for an Android 2.3 smartphone w/ a fully functional gamepad!

Even if I don't buy a Playstation Pocket game, it'll be worth it alone for the android emulators (gba and psx, woot!).

Hopefully this will be mine as soon as it's available!

@mlsdm - That was my reservation as well, but remember, this phone is blasting through benchmarks better than any other hands-on phone available... and that was on the demo unit! Also, don't forget that the first reports of dualcore phones are that they're not as optimized as well as they should be.

As with any technology, there's always something better on the horizon. Due to the very unique form factor this one has (a high quality gamepad), I'm very eager to jump aboard the Xperia Play train.

I seriously don't understand all the hate around this matter. Fanboyisms and rage, much?

That last line wasn't aimed at you, mlsdm, but the people who mindlessly bash this tech.

The first commercial made me want one. The second commercial made me not want one. Lol. We are a culture of brainwashed zombies.

Only thing worse than an analogue nub is a touch thing.

Much rather have a keyboard than a pad on my phone, but cool the options there.

@Arttemis
Not hating on it at all, if it came off as that.
Part of it is I'm thinking Sony might've missed out on the majority of people transitioning from dumbphones to smartphones, especially since last year was the big one for Android. These people are going to be locked into their contract as it is.

But don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic idea in principal -- but I have my doubts. If you look at how the market's developed, with on-screen joystick & buttons, I can't help but imagine publishers straight-up porting games 1, 2 & 3 in the same lazy manner it was initially done with touch devices in the first place.
Did you see any of those 20 partners with an original title there?

@mlsdm - Oh, I know there are issues.

In regards to ports of other games, there won't necessarily need to be any. This is merely an Android device with a gamepad. Most of the apps *will* be touch-based, available on the regular marketplace, but the design won't require any porting - it's still an android platform.

All the games designed around the hardware will have to be designed for the Playstation Pocket platform, so I doubt they will be blind, sloppy ports.

This phone is a cross-platform device all on its own, so you have to recogize the difference between Android apps and PS apps; they won't be designed homogenously.

I'd like to say I don't want one, but the idea of the PS Suite really has me intrigued. If they can handle it well, I think the Xplay and NGP could have a promising future that I can hopefully afford to be part of.

If this is out when I next get my annual free upgrade, I'll bite unless there is a phone way more powerful.

Either way it'll be Android.

I'll even have this in my pocket, and an NGP in my man-bag (read:laptop bag).

Such a Sony whore.

@Arttemis - Benchmarks don't mean dick in the mobile space. Geeks like to pretend they do, but having the hardware support the software smoothly and without stability issues is what you really need. How many Ghz that takes doesn't mean anything. What the handset manufacturer's REALLY need to do is finally make that Android PMP. I would love to have an android device to hack around on, but I'm not buying a second (carrier-subsidized) phone.
