Wow. Perhaps you've already heard my sad story about the purchase of a Metallic Blue import PSP right before the PSP Slim was announced. I thought I finally had my mind made up about not really needing one, and lately some Japanese bundles have been tempting me, but this video completely changes my mind.

Here we have video of the original PSP and the PSP 2000 (right) side-by-side, each showing off hand-synched loading times from the recently released Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. If somehow you're reading this before watching the video (who does that these days?), let me tell you that you're about to be surprised.

The difference is a real eye opener. The PSP Slim manages to load a battle and play more half way through it before the original PSP even shows the battle screen. What's worse is that the original PSP's post-battle "return to world" loading takes even longer -- almost 12 seconds by my count. The new PSP's takes less than a fifth of that time.

While we can't be sure that all games will show this much of a difference, I think most gamers around these parts are technically inclined to know that the PSP Slim's doubled RAM is making the difference here, and other games that require frequent loading will probably see similar benefits.

With this, I'll be buying a new PSP Silm this week.

Wow, if that's the case maybe I'll get rid of my current PSP and get a slim.

Damn, that alone makes the PSP Slim much more appealing.

Mabec, I've recently seen that Wal-Mart has them in stock. Also Best Buy - I've only seen the Daxter pack, but that's a great deal. Metallic PSP, 1gb stick, daxter game, and family guy disc for $200

I ordered the Daxter Pack over the weekend. My journey to the darkside is now complete.

hmm .. thats pretty impressive , loading times off the UMD seems to be moving along quite well.

maybe i will save this page somewhere and let you know how quickly it can load off the memory stick, with the processor at 333mhz on an old psp ;)

Do they still come in black? I've only seen the silver ones on store shelves.

Not only are the load times faster, but the system itself is a complete dream to play.

No more sticky d-pad, no more squishy square button.

And you can really feel the difference in weight.

I haven't been happier with a game purchase in a long time.

deiga - thanks for the deets. I was wondering about dpad action. As an avid puzzle gamer, I want that thing to snap like the PS2/PS3 dpad

I can deal with the load times (seeing as there's next to nothing I want to play on PSP anyway) until the PSP gets another price drop. When it drops to maybe $129 I'll snag one and then I'll keep my old one for homebrew and emulators and such.

It'll probably be another year before Crisis Core gets released over here anyway.

Someone should confirm that the if the slim has a brighter screen, every comparison ive seen shows the slim looking brighter. I don't know if the setting are different or its from the older version being dimmed down due to age.

I'm real tempted to pick one up, but there still aren't enough games that I'm interested to warrant a purchase... (off the top of my head, I can only think of maybe three games I'd want to get)

LCD backlights lose their brightness over time. It could just be that they're comparing the slim to older fat psps.

is the psp slim loading the umd at 333mhz as default factory settings now? or is that the standard 222mhz (lawl i forgot, factory settings are too slow anyway)?

i think i'll get a new psp the day sony decides to bundle it with a ps3 at 200...with a 4 gig stick :D

I have a PSP since launch date currently running FW 3.40 OE-A and I'm playing Crisis Core as we speak. I must say that I have no downtime or lag or either have to wait while loading a mission, screen, battle. It's true that btw I'm running the game from a memory stick for the moment. Still I'm sure that I'll see no difference when I'll play with the original UMD (missed purolator today >.>)

This is why I stopped buying consoles at launch. Nowadays, more than ever, you always get a unfinished and/or low quality machine. I hate searching for patches for my games, I hate even more that some games need patches at release. Even more now that console games need patching. Or the console needs patches. Or the worst case scenario, a better version of that console is released - not changed in shape, size or weight, but in performance.

If you run custom firmware, you can bring the core clock up to 333mhz, and run games from the memory stick instead of the slow UMD... I still don't think this new system warrants re-purchasing a psp.

If you don't already have one, it's good, but spending that amount of money for such marginal differences seems wrong to me.

Dang. I'm glad I still never purchased an original PSP. When I get one, it will certainly be a proper PSP.

Hey Dale, if you pick up the slim, please tell me how it compares to the original. I've heard some people say that the new model feels cheaper than the original and seems easier to break. I've heard others say it's more comfortable and the new plastic is an improvement.
Or hell, somebody who commented let me know your opinion. I wanna know if this new model is worth getting over the original. I dig the whole TV out thang, but I'll admit one reason I'd want a PSP again is for the homebrew and custom firmware, which is apparently a real bitch to setup on the new slims as of right now.
