Video: Portal beaten in under 20 minutes

5:55 PM on 11.08.2007, Jordan Grim Devore 48 comments

     Speedruns
A man by the name of "Groobotube" is about to simultaneously blow your mind, give you a migraine, and impregnate you with his unbelievable speedrun of Portal. He ends up finishing the game in an unparalleled 18:05, which is far better than what 99.9% of us could ever dream of accomplishing.

In all honesty, it's pretty difficult to make out exactly what's going on in this speedrun, especially during the later levels -- but it sure does look cool. It even had me yelling "oh hell naw" in disbelief on more than one occasion.

If you've been yearning to pick up on some of the more advanced maneuvers, you won't want to miss the second half of the run, which can be viewed after the break.

He really did euthanize his companion cube faster than any other test subject.

It had to be said.

Jesus christ this man is a wizard. Valve needs to hire this person to break all their games.

That companion cube shit was magic.

It's all good stuff. But I always wonder why speed runners are so.... Hyperactive... Even in situations where there is nothing that can be done but wait, they're jumping all over the place like some super orangutan on speed.

Why this is, I will never understand.

@ Demmen

Yea I've noticed that too...like at the beginning he was climbing the walls of the cell before the timer got to 30 seconds for no reason. A total spaz, but one helluva player.

But I SO want to watch this. Maybe I'll come back to it after I beat it?

For the boss, he used the turret to shoot at him, but it missed and hit the boss enough times to dislodge all the parts. Ingenious.

brad drac at 11/08/2007 19:06
->Zlimness: He opened a portal within line of site of a turret, then opened the other end so the turret could shoot at him through it, which in doing so also hits glados, which has much the same effect as blasting it with the missiles, just far more efficient.

->Dennen: I'd say this guy's probably played through the game like 50 times. After that many goes, that minute wait at the start, as well as all the hanging around in lifts, must seem torturous. They rob him of precious seconds on his speed run through life.

That guy is amazing. Having said that, you have to wonder how it is fun to play when you've obviously played that much. I mean, it seemed like the game was a hassle to the guy.

brad drac- yeah, at least 50.

Dude, you won't find out how to solve the puzzles by watching this. He takes so many insane shortcuts, it's crazy!

Seriously, kudos. That must have taken a lot of work (coupled with the lack of anything better to do) to figure all of this out.

I mean, GLADOS couldn't even finish taunting at the end!

With regards to Deiga's comment: When GLaDOS tries to kill you, the guy is already so far ahead that she is talking about how the portal device will function after being in the fire, even though he is several rooms past that part.

Also, I love how he took my approach and brought a chair with him to climb into that access tube instead of breaking open the glass thing to get another cube.

The turret part at the end was brilliant. I don't feel like the video spoiled anything, because there's no way I'll be able to replicate exactly what he did - whatever it was that he actually did. Confused but amazed.

I waited for a speedrun on portal to be done. Some awesome shortcuts being used there, very well done. Also, it was nice to see the flying technique once again which was introduced in HL2 Done Quick.

Thanks for clarifying on the bossbattle though, I really had not realized why all the parts were there already scattered around when he entered the room.

That was the single most insane thing I have ever seen. As someone who was continually baffled by the physics of Portal and someone who even after playing all the way through couldn't quite wrap my head around the concept, that was god-like. Seriously. I wonder what his times on the advanced maps are? Haha.
