Video Games Live special coming to TV, Blu-ray photo

Nice. Good to see our friends at Video Games Live are doing it up right. The popular video game music concert series will have a special coming to television, airing on PBS in 2010. It will be taped at the February 5th, 2010 show at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. If you want tickets to be at that show, they go on sale on the 18th of this month.

Also coming in 2010 is Video Games Live: Volume Two, a CD containing new music from the concert. A companion DVD and Blu-Ray will also be made available in 2010, and it will showcase additional segments and many special extras including behind the scenes footage, making of Video Games Live, interactive angles, exclusive game developer and composer interviews, game trailers and more. They say that this will be the first game concert DVD to be distributed worldwide.

Again, nice. If you haven't seen the show yet, I can't recommend it enough.

Sounds great. I don't live in a place that VGL would ever likely visit, so it'll be nice to catch the show. First CD was quite nice.

When it airs on PBS, donate to them. It will send a definite message that you want to see more of that type of programming, and that's the only way you'll ever see a program involving videogames on TV that doesn't involve Mountain Dew, fake-ass rappers and other sources of depression.

Sounds great! I've seen the show twice and also can't recommend it enough. While a CD/DVD wouldn't replicate the immense joy of actually being surrounded by other fans of video game music (as well as the fun of chatting excitedly in pictochat during intermission), it's obviously the next best thing.

I just got the email. Excellent. I've been wanting to make one of their shows since they began but never made it. I was close once but my dad got sick and we couldn't make it and ended up giving our tickets away.

I can't really recommend the show that much. If you get the cheapest tickets maybe (buy them at venue too, fuck ticket master). It's sort of like a Playskool "My First Vidja Game Concert" deal. I appreciate them getting things out there, but much of the content is very middling and you either can't tell the difference between what they play and an OST, or it's some rather harshly tossed together medleys. I think Tommy has the right idea, but the wrong attitude. Trying to get people to take video game music more seriously, and then taking jabs at the amazing Civ IV intro you play, then turning around and doing a trashy One Winged Angel cover with some youtube video of cosplayers in the background isn't helping. I'd love to know if Martin Leung has more talent than being a sideshow monkey, but there's never been a chance for it to be displayed at shows.

I do hope it will lead to better sets being played in the states someday though. I know the Seattle Symphony did a dedicated FF concert after playing this show.

the VGL i went to in new haven CT was awesome because that kid(Martin Leung?) who does alot of video game piano music on youtube got to use a 100 year old pipe organ to play castlevania. it was pretty cool.

Thanks for the information, Dale. I'll defiantly be checking this out!
I've been trying in vain to get to one of the concerts, but my plan has, so far, always been thwarted, somehow. Also, I've been meaning to pick-up the VGL CD.

I haven't been to one of the live shows but I'll be sure to tune in when it airs on PBS.

The show is worth seeing at the cheaper ticket price. I found it to be too short and have way too much Tommy...seriously that guy is way to full of himself. And they really should just cut one winged angel and really any FF music...as much as I love it they cant show any gameplay footage while playing the music which kind of kills the visuals aspect of the songs.
