Video games blamed for car accidents photo

Apparently my car accident Friday night could have been caused by something other than the other car driver being drunk or severely lacking the brain cells to drive a vehicle on the right side of the road.

A study by German researchers released yesterday in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied showed that people that play video games may be more likely to engage in risky driving practices and get into more car accidents than non-gamers.

Researchers questioned over 198 males and females and those who reported playing video games reported more acts of reckless driving and more car accidents. The males especially reported more reckless driving if they were specifically playing driving simulators on their consoles.

"Driving actions in these games often include competitive and reckless driving, speeding and crashing into other cars or pedestrians, or performing risky stunts with the vehicle. In short, most actions in racing games imply a very high risk of having an accident or severe crash in a highly realistic virtual road traffic environment," the researchers wrote.

Researchers also did tests on people playing shooting games and found their aggression levels were elevated after play. The research group believes that not only violent games cause harmful behavior in players, but any game where the rules of normal day to day life do not apply can be a bad influence. Parents are strongly suggest to discuss these games and the rules of the road with their children.

So the other driver could have been possibly driving down the middle of the road at 2:30 in the morning during a bad snow storm because too many video games have made he believe that life has a restart button. Great, now maybe I should show him that if I take him down with a head shot, he doesn't actually disappear and I don't really get any points for it. Though I wish I could.

Techdirt did a nice job trashing this research this morning...apparently they had people play a driving game and then put them in a driving "simulator" where they drove more aggressively. They however ignore the fact that the people obviously know they are in a simulator and may just drive recklessly because there are no consequences.

I don't agree with the research on driving games any more than I agree with violent video games causing little emo kids to shoot people up in their school.

I just thought I'd post the story since it gave me a chance to bitch about my accident.

i knew you weren't agreeing with it, i just wanted to make sure we all knew that the anti-videogame research is still a joke

My pontiac is pretty good. My mom's died after 300,000K and my ex-boyfriend's after 250,000k. Mine was fine until I was forced off the road and into a sign.

It is funny because there are other studies that say the opposite. They show that people who play high speed racing games increase driving skill because it increasing your hand-eye coordination,observation skills, and reflex times. Playing racing games also showed an increase in skill among surgeons performing operations.

but you know, maybe racing games really do make us bad people. I mean, i don't have any speeding tickets, traffic violations, and haven't caused any collisions.

What's next, playing videogames makes you more likely to be the victim of a shark attack?
When will this end???

@namelessted,

I can't remember where, but in this study they didn't play "Good Games" like Gran Turismo that reward good driving. They played Burn Out... so they drove like crap.

Also, Correlation != Causality.

Also Cocks.

same with the study i am talking about. I think it was Project Gotham Racing. That game is nothing like real driving. It has to do with the fact that you have to be able to see things in the game and react to them quickly. After you play something like Burnout for 4 hours you start to notice tiny little details on the screen that can blow you up instantly and are eventually able to avoid those things.

it just so happens that this translates to real world experiences.

I hate the correlation between video game driving and real driving. Just because I'm looping leguna 90 times in a row on GT isn't going to help me in real life other than to know the pattern of the road. Just like playing the game isn't going to influence how I take a turn in real life or making an intelligent person FEEL like they can drive better.

I think the key part of the whole crazy video game driving = crazy real life driving is purely if that person is a retard or not.

bah what crap. When I lost control of my car a few years ago, was it the excellent training I received from drivers ed that saved me? Nope it was the countless hours I spent on GT that help me recover from the slide. This study ignores the cold hard fact that I drove like a maniac long before I played driving games.

exactly Wes... the people who drive crazy usually have did it since they started driving. Not because of video games. At least for me it was living on dirt roads. Doing dumb shit was fun!

I can say with a fact that my video game driving training simulator (aka Crazy Taxi) failed me a few years back. I was driving home and hydroplaned into the back of an SUV. I need to call up SCE and see if the new GT has a weather feature akin to Hurricane.

haha, I love this topic. I can not count the times I have avoided hitting people because of their stupid driving from playing Gran Turismo. After a year of playing GT4 it was raining outside, and some idiot's car died right in front of me as he was trying to cross 2 lanes of highway in a small gap. He hit his brakes and stopped totally, and I slid my truck right around his car and saved my truck from going into a spin because of having to go around him like that. I want an insurance discount for playing GT4.

a couple weeks later I got new tires on my car [FWD], and they rotated my low tread tires to the back. Was turning at a light where there was a lot of sand because of construction near by. Back end slid right out, and saved my car from going into a ditch. Then further down the road some idiot was just driving down the road and casually drove right into a ditch, haha. I swear I live in Red Neck Nation, Avg. IQ 40.
