Look. I think I speak for all gamers when I say that we've had enough - and I mean ENOUGH - of Grand Theft Auto being portrayed as the whipping boy for violence in video games. NEWSFLASH - IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING THE WORST. Not even on the top 10. Every time it pops up on TV or the news, gamers cringe and don't even take the article seriously because the GTA reference is so completely out of touch and badly researched. Hot Coffee wasn't even playable without a hack. A hack!!!
So I want all of you right wingers, protective parents, congressmen, hack lawyers, and goodie goodies to learn something today. Today is Video game violence school lesson day at Destructoid. Lesson #1: GTA is not your guy. Not even close. I'm not saying you need to change your mind about video games being violent, you're entitled to your opinion. Hell, I'll even give you more material for your ridiculous witch hunts. I'm saying *branch out*. Try to wrap your head around this: Lesson #2: Video games have been this screwed up, sexually perverse, offensive, and violent even before the first Nintendo was on the shelves. If you have the attention span of a cabbage, just watch the video... and compose yourself so you don't drop your morning danish in shock. Read on when ready.
That lovely game is called Postal 2. Yes, you can murder people, kick the corpses, piss on them, light them on fire, and they sometimes don't even try to fight back. You can destroy property for fun, it's part of the gameplay. In GTA the slain bodies disappear, half the gore, half the detail, and doesn't offer any means to humiliate the people you murdered. Are you still with me? If you think that was bad, look at Chiller from the 80's. It makes GTA look like the teacup ride at Disney. Yes, yes it does, nod your head. Now that I have your attention, here's your homework: Last week Faith Naked started this thread on the Destructoid Forums asking gamers to list a handful of the most offensive games we could remember. The article is now complete, you can move on to Lesson #3 read a proper list of offensive games you should start sighting from now on instead of Grand Theft Auto. Yes, you can't take most of these companies to court for lawsuits anymore but let's pretend you're actually not just pursuing Rockstar's wallet for a second. Humor me.
Do you want our respect? Do you want to start sounding like you're not some out of touch geezer who barely understands what a video game is? Let's hear you talk about an Atari game who's objective was to rape an indian woman in bondage. Or a Windows 98 game that had actual actors stage savage murders and marital rape. There are a ton of good choices. But ENOUGH with GTA. Or you can make pretend that gamers still give a sh1t about Hot Coffee, and we will continue glazing over your tired meanderings with a dead mule of a subject.
