Viacom spanked by poor Rock Band sales photo

Viacom's quarterly revenues were down 14 percent. When sales are down, you've gotta blame someone or something, right?

Rock Band gets the blame this time around. Profit dropped 26 percent, and they're saying that lower sales of Rock Band are at fault. Viacom calls out a "soft retail environment" for this. I don't care about the money and the success of Viacom as much as I do Destructoid Editor-in-Chief Nick Chester, who will probably cry tonight because of this.

"As the leading pure-play content company, Viacom has the right portfolio of assets and the right vision to manage through this challenging climate while we continue to position ourselves for future growth," said chief executive Summer Redstone.

Need for me to decode this? I'll make it easy: The Beatles: Rock Band is coming on September 9th.

I have to make a choice. Go see "9", or pick up The Beatles: Rock Band.

Of course it's selling poorly, everybody who's interested already owns it! It's called market saturation, Viacom. The game still rakes in the cash from DLC.

It also didn't help that they completely ignored an entire region of the planet for full year, only to then make it available in only some countries at limited supply.
During that time there was GH3, GH Aerosmith, and in the window of GHWT.

Yeah, completely f***ing up the release strategy and pricing for every country outside of the US beyond words allowing Activision to completely own them is the issue, not a "soft" retail environment.

Funny, it couldn't be all the theme parks it owns, or any of the foreign MTV's? If you went and saw all of the sources of revenue for Viacom, then you'll see how much blame they're putting on Harmonix (All I can say from seeing the list was: Goddamn.)

I have seen 5 copies of Rock Band 2 in total looking around every shop I can find where I live, including the big stores in Cardiff.

Me and a friend bought 2 of those.

Seriously, why is RB2 so understocked in the UK?

Cry me a river. Overestimating your sell thru at retail based on hot sales of your previous product was a lame idea. Not everyone who bought a bundle last year was going to buy it again this year when so few improvements were added to the hardware.

I've never bought a full bundle and I don't plan on ever getting one. I don't see the point when I can piecemeal a kit on my own for the same cost at my own leisure.

The Beatles rickenbacher is the first superfluous instrument I will have bought ever simply because I was holding out for it.

"Seriously, why is RB2 so understocked in the UK?"

Overpriced, underadvertised and none of the instruments have ever been released - and Rock Band 1 didn't sell well in the UK because it was a year late and ludicrously overexpensive.

It's really no surprise retailers threw their support and orders behind Guitar Hero instead at that point, despite Rock Band being more fun to play.

Maybe it's because Rock Band (and GH, for that matter) has already become the Madden of new IPs within only two years. Releases every year when online updates are more than sufficient do not make people want to buy each iteration.

Funnily enough, I'm reading through The Dilbert Principle again, and even though that book is more than a decade old, it appears to ring true here.

Rock Band sales are down? Could it be the fact that almost everyone has a Rock Band or Guitar Hero game already?!

I bought 4 Guitar Heroes + all instruments (for Wii) instead of Rock Band because:
Rock Band 1: 1 _year_ too late, expensive, lackluster Wii port, not compatible with GH instruments
Rock Band 2: _still_ not available in Europe! (for Wii)

I'm sure more people would have bought it if it was actually for sale!
