This kind of scares me. Hopefully they'll be able to land somewhere without messing with the day to day operations too much.
As long as we still get awesome games and support from Harmonix, I'm happy.
I assume they're the same Harmonix who used to make effect's pedals? I used to love a good harmonix pedal, the Big Muff being a favourite.

WTF? Harmonix is doing very well, why would they do this? Seriously, it makes no sense at all. I don't see much of a problem with them getting support...maybe they can make it as an independent developer, Dance Central and Rock Band 3 are going to sell a shitload this Christmas!
I doubt this will change much. Harmonix basically prints money for whoever owns them between the DLC sales and the way each new iteration of Rock Band sells. I'm honestly rather surprised that Viacom even sold them. Don't they like money?
The big question is whether they'll still be on close enough terms to continually dole out the DLC like they have been. I'm assuming MTV had a lot to do with the contacts for music licenses that Harmonix found it harder to get back in the day.
If this in any way screws up Rock Band and/or its DLC, I will find every member of the Jersey Shore and kill them.
I'm guessing Viacom thinks Harmonix jumped the shark with Rock Band 3, they probably believe that Harmonix has nowhere to go from here but down. You know what they say, buy low and sell high.

I don't think EA can afford them. EA can barely afford their lease on their studios right now. HMX is not only pretty expensive but if you want another Rock Band (assuming of course RB doesn't move with HMX) that's an expensive fucking franchise to keep alive.

The interesting part of this, if you read the press release, is that they call Harmonix "unprofitable." I didn't realize that at all. At least critically, they're quite successful. I'm surprised they're not making profit at least with DLC sales and things.
Yeah... Harmonix will make awesome games no matter who buys them... unless maybe Craptivision buys them and forces them to make Guitar Hero games again. Actually... I don't like this news now... that means some other crap developer can work on Rock Band? Ugh. Ok... nevermind... this is bad news.

even viacom knows that the plastic guitar genre is on the way out. i love how everyone thought the wiimote was a fad, and that the music rhythm genre was so amazing. turns out just the opposite, eh?
Crap, I can hardly think of another company that can manage Rock Band's mega support. Activision is the bad land Harmonix just crawled away off ,getting sold to them would be insane.
This seems kind of counterintuitive. Doesn't Harmonix make Viacom boatloads of money? Granted, selling it will also make boatloads, but only once.
They determined that Harmonix has reached its maturity stage and is on the cusp of decline.
