VF5 720p? Really? That would suck photo

Say it isn't so! Nex put up Virtua Fighter 5 video that made me feel funny in the pantal regions, but with this new news I'm afraid that blue pills might be in order.

The folks over at Gaming-Age have received a copy of the retail boxed version of Virtua Fighter 5 for the PS3 and have uncovered something that hopefully is just a typo. The North American box listed 720p as the only supported HD video format available, while this week's Japanese release supports 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Jim at GA goes on to explain that some gamers with the Japanese version claimed that the 1080p content "didn't look quite right" and that it may just be upscaled.

Sony, SEGA, please give us something to appreciate our 1080p televisions with other than Ridge Racer 7 and some Blu-ray movies. You can't just take away multiplayer and then think it's OK to remove Full HD too.

How is this Sony's fault when the game is clearly made by Sega?

Also, it's a good thing Tekken is better than VF, because otherwise I would actually worry about this.

Exactly: not what I had in mind, either

Magesx: never said it was Sony's fault that VF5 isn't HD - I was just asking them for something else.

the 1080p version doesn't look right because it's probably using the pixel doubling thing the PS3 does.

Pretty hilarious actually. Unless I haven't been following this right, it seems that the 360 will have just as may 1080p titles as the PS3 since none of the PS3 exclusives have it. All this talk about "full HD" from Sony trying to compare it to the 360 and "the next gen starts when we say it starts" is just a bunch of crap. That's par for the course for Sony though. I'm still waiting for this $200 extra supercomputer advantage...

(checks PS3's specs)

Yep, native 1080i is still broken Sony. Thanks for that one.

In any case, it's a matter of too little too late Sony. I won't consider it now. Not when your competition has you beat on every level.

I've got decent motion sensing gaming on one console already, and the other HAS adequate support RIGHT NOW for HD gaming. And a better online service. Oh and games too. Right, can't forget about that...

And rumble. Which is something we do want in our games.

Why don't you play the game first an see if it's any good. I can't believe people are already about "only" 720p.

Arcades are in HD but I wouldn't be able to tell you the resolution if my life depended on it. I don't really know the image difference between 720 and 1080 by sight alone.

i am so utterly sick and tired of all of you fanboys whining about 1080p on your under 60" televisions. especially considering most of you are playing on sub 40" lcd panels which most commonly have a native resolution of wxga "1366 X 768" DO YOUR HOMEWORK on anything under 60" it is utterly impossible for the human eye to discern the differences between 720p and 1080i "much less 1080p"

I really does feel like gaming is wasted on some people when in their eyes a games fate is being decided before they've even played it based on technical merits.

I think some of the people are angry at the fact that Sony promised one thing, then delivered another.

I don't have a set that does 1080p yet, so I haven't bothered to even look at the ps3 or any HD DVD options.

I could tell you though, I would be upset if I had gone out and spent lots of money preparing for this, and instead I get nothing 'extra' that would justify the extra money I spent.

It could be that the true 1080p games are around the corner, but something inside me tells me that for the immediate future, we'll just be getting 'normal' res HD games.

Even then, it's not a main concern with me just because all the games I want are going to come out on my 360. the only game that will make me want to get one would be God of War 3, but then again, that's what our dev kits at wrok are for.

Who's whining? I'm just pointing out something Sony said. Sorry if I hurt you Sony fanboys' pride. Actually...no I'm not.

You're missing the point (or trying to avoid it more than likely). Sony has no advantage over the 360 other than MGS4 at this point (if you think that's worth an extra $200).

Here are the supposed advantages by Sony's own mouth over 360:

1080p or TRUE HD (the next gen starts when we SAY it starts)
-no more 1080p titles than 360 has-

Better graphics
-have yet to see it-

60fps in MotorStorm
-didn't happen-

There's probably more but I lose track. Also, no rumble and inferior online options. Yeah, the PS3 sure is looking to be worth that extra money....

You may call me a fanboy, but the fact is I'm equal opportunity when it comes to consoles. Check out my profile and you'll see that I own a PS1 and PS2 in addition to other consoles (and don't have a 360 yet for that matter). I don't subscribe to blind fanboyism. I'm sure I will eventually get a PS3 also but it's going to have to come WAY down in price and get some decent exclusive games because they aren't providing superior-to-360 ports yet.

I'm just tired of Sony's ridiculous bragging that they can't back up and fanboys defending them 'til the bitter end. Wake up Sony fanboys, Sony is playing you hardcore.

i own a 360
and a wii
have owned ps1 ps2 xbox gamecube n64 etc. etc.
i even bought a ps3 but i returned it to best buy because it looked like crap and played like crap and quite frankly there are a lot of better things i can do with my near $1000
and it isn't even the hd fanboys it's the 1080p ones yes all of you every single one who drank the Kool Aid plopped down a huge wad on a display to small to appreciate the medium and now lambaste anything not 1080p

Jay, you got me pegged to a T! I surely don't have a Wii or 360. Only a PS3 and a 12" 1080p set. My post definitely didn't express enthusiasm for the game, I was just really totally mad that it wasn't 1080p.
Also, I never was a fan of Virtua Fighter. I definitely don't own every version all the way back to the Saturn.

not a fan of v/f or fighting games at all my real gripe here is with sony/samsung/mitsubishi and all of these companies pushing 1080p only to line there pockets "True HD" by the definition is anything over 480i not 36 mos. ago 1080p was still theoretic and hotly argued for its validity there are no broadcasts of any channel on any tv system in 1080p and there wont be for a very long time if ever "the bandwidth just isnt there" secondly all fixed pixel display technologies ie LCD,DLP,PLASMA,LCOS,SED,OLED display every inbound frame of video at there native resolution so most people who own a 1080p tv are looking at an image that has been either scaled/doubled/ or transcoded from its original resolution to fill the screen corner to corner, the nasty downside of this is that you cant make chicken salad out of chicken shit and the most common hd formats 480p and 720p end up looking awful after this conversion process on your 1080p display

As much as a dick as people think Jay might come off as, he is pretty much right. Working in electronics for years, it IS nearly impossible to determine 720p and 1080p at a medium viewing distance that is standard in most people's homes and on a 42" LCD/plasma. Now if you have a 70" LCOS TV and a little over 10 feet of viewing distance, you can tell the difference.

Most people want 1080p because it's the new craze and it's what Sony hyped as a selling point for the PS3. I think that's why people are mad. Even if they can't tell the difference, it's just the fact that Sony has lied to the consumer and you aren't getting what you thought would have been a justified purchase. Now you are stuck paying higher prices for new technology that was promised and isn't even being used.

For me, the main point is that people went out and bought these 1080p HD screens. My uncle picked up a Sony Bravia (admittedly not just in anticipation of the PS3 but it was a big factor). I only roll with a 720p Samsung, but I can sympathise with him. It seems that anything sony you're buying these days you're paying for "potential" - realised or not; PSP, UMD, PS3.....

I want to see Sony get this boat floating again. I really do. But they're going to have to employ some PR damage control and stop talking down to their consumer all the time.

You shouldn't buy a game just so you can play something in HD. I personally think VF5 is fun, I've been THE VF supporter on this site lately havn't I, so I would buy the game not giving a shit about which HD level it is.

Listen to all of the fanboy cretinism on this thread. The PS3 has 1080p titles, including VF5. Yet people still manage to turn it into a whine that there are no 1080p titles when there are.
