That fact is that if you changed the names of the characters you wouldn't think the game had ANYTHING to do with the Devil May Cry franchise. Reboot or or reimagining or alternate reality or whatever. The characters personalities are different, they look different, the feel different, the entire setting is different, they have different abilities and relationships, the only direct links are very lightly on the surface (red trenchcoat with broad sword. Blue outfit with katana and character names.)
Will the game be good? Well, only time will tell.
All joking aside, I agree 100 percent. If this was a new IP EVERYONE will overlook everything negative thing that has been said about it. At the end of the day, I hope the game is good.
Capcom: LOL fans are mad at us.. oh thats right.. we still dont care..

You can have a person who loves steak and loves fried chicken. That person goes into a restaurant and orders a steak off the menu with a side of french fries. The server brings him a plate of fried chicken and french fries, explaining that at this restaurant fried chicken is called steak. Now the fried chicken may be great, and the customer might even like it, but they came in expecting a steak and fries and the only the he got that he was EXPECTING was the fries. That is what DmC is. A possibly great game that is nothing like what the packaging claims is and should have it's label changed.
Keep in mind, I personally dislike the direction they took with the games characters regardless of the precedent that was set before hand by trying to attach an existing brand to it. The characters don't interest me, the setting seems sort of neat but the characters not so much.
Why make survival horror when third person shooters sell so well? Why make precise action games when GoW sells so well?
I kind of disagree with this. They'd have to change several major story elements and therefore potentially rebuild massive bits of the game if they made it a brand new thing.
Let's assume that as you and some people have said is true, and they just called this not DMC, but a new name. Say, Broken Mirror.
Broken Mirror is about the twin sons of an Angel and a Demon, who are on a crusade against demonic hordes that secretly subvert the world, and their method for fighting this madness is high octance sword/gun play, with the main PC being cocky, arrogant and a bit of a wildboy with a heart, and hid brother being cooler, colder, but generally speaking more efficient and in charge, but probably not as trustworthy. And our brother(probably the other too) can call upon his supernatural heritage and 'Trigger' the 'Devil' within.
I could go on. But if ^That Game came out as anything but a new DMC, everybody would be up in arms about how much the bastards are ripping off DMC and just repackaging it. At least this way they're reviving a franchise while they're at it, and this game looks pretty cool.
@Qtin - Get over your fucking self. You don't speak for anyone but you, so don't act as the voice of DMC fans, it makes you look like a prick. I was following Devil May Cry when it was still a Resident Evil spin off with Leon in the Dante seat(I don't suppose you think that Dante's hair looks like a slightly longer version of Leons by coincidence do you?). So I'm most definitely a 'real fan'. And real DMC fans know that the franchise died with 4. Fuck Nero. Fuck Dantes heart motif. Fuck KYRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
At least they aren't prepared to let the franchise rot forever like they've done with Megaman and Breath of Fire.
@Conrad
" my immediate reaction was not to laugh out loud and that's pretty good for a character in this franchise"
But laughing out loud was the point
Fucking fanboys are never happy.
If you were a real DMC fan you'd also remember that DMC4 is the highest selling game in the franchise, and still got extremely solid reviews.
Stop being a fair-weather fan who just jumps on the coolest bandwagon.
Anyways, I'm honestly looking forward to this. I love the old games to bits, and this looks like it's going to be pretty damn faithful, and, when a franchise I love is rebooted, that's all I can ask for. People who are getting butthurt over it are really overlooking the surprisingly large number of similarities between this and the old games that still remain. (In my opinion)
The more I see of this game the more it might as well be a completely new IP. This is barely a shell of the series it's supposed to represent.
I wish I could take the anger and silliness of some of these comments, chop it up into a fine powder and snort it off a Paula Deen's buttery tits.
The last game had a completely new protagonist with a completely different personality & move set. That was a breath of life for the franchise. Especially since most agreed, Nero was actually more fun to play as.
So I'm unsure why a complete overhaul of the characters was necessary. Hell I could even overlook Dante's new Nathan Drake look if he had more of the personality Original Dante had. So far that's not the case. I hope they surprise me but it's looking doubtful.
"Especially since most agreed, Nero was actually more fun to play as."
Most liked that one grapple weapon he had, which easily could have been given to Dante or any other character for that matter. I don't recall anyone loving Nero for who he was.
and to people saying "boo hoo this isnt DMC", no its not, its a reboot by a different team with the same basic story elements. get over it already. if you want old DMC, go play the old ones.
and like someone else said, if they gave it a different name, everyone would be complaining its ripping of DMCs story etc.
Looks great.
Probably not at first, but I thought atleast he added a counterpoint to Dante's irreverence. Determined and whiny but he was cocky in his own right too.The more I played through the game the more I liked him. I will admit though, I didn't play DMC4 until this year thus missing out on the eye of the storm of hate he probably recieved.
I realize also I haven't played DmC & I cannot judge it as a full product. I'm personally disappointed with what I've seen character wise so far. I mean didn't people get mad about Dante exhibiting no personality in DMC2? It might as well be the same case here so far.
Anyways, disappointed but not unwilling to atleast give it a try at release.
And good lord, so many comments here that read like Capcom shills.
That video of a dude getting an SSS combo spamming the same attack was all I needed, this game will trash, I still expect all reviewers to give it an 11/10 DANTE IS BACK BABY though as Capcom seems to be spending way to much on fluff pieces. Not to mention that 90% of reviewers heralding this as the 2nd coming clearly state they never played DMC beyond the 1ist which invalidates their opinion on the franchise as a whole.
@Elzam
Except it did have a lore, well established with the numerous characters, sparda, hell even the demons themselves, there's quite a lot of it even if its Japan only.
I like the looking at this as an ultimate uni (comics) type of thing, but my DmC fanboy still comes out here and there. Hopefully this just a fun game in its own right, but after reading Kyo's comment and looking at said video, Im scared. Still, fingers crossed. I do love the city setting (it being a being too).
To put it bluntly: Your point is shit. Sales =/= quality. Never has, never will.
As for being a 'bandwagon jumper' child please, I don't even know what you're going on about. The 'cool' bandwagon when it comes to this game is most DEFINITELY the 'fuck the new game' one. And I made it clear I was never on a Bandwagon. I was following DMC intently from development of the original to when 4 dropped, and 4 was a turd in a punchbowl.
Although Kyo makes a good point, it must be said.
Social commentary = good.
Squabbling over a chick = shit.
Call me crazy but I don't know why Capcom felt the need to reboot the Devil may Cry franchise. (It's like the Dc comics reboot--all the unfinished story lines *sighs* my heart broke) I would've like to see them continue from where DMC 2 left off or maybe giving Vergil his own game...Hes an awesome character; its just a shame we didn't get a chance to see him in the spotlight.
I'm not hatin on the game; I just feel like there's alot of wasted potential with the story and the characters....(come to think of it, this seems like a Capcom trend; but that's another story...)
Honestly,I don't know if I will play this. For me,the change is way to drastic.

Stop acting like there were really any characters and stories to give a shit about. DMC was never about story or character development, it was about over the top gameplay. If anything, Ninja Theory is doing a BETTER job at creating a coherent story while still retaining the over the top gameplay. Obviously, the majority of us have not played DMC, but all the gameplay trailers and the newly released trailer from Gamescom are doing a pretty fucking great job at showing how Ninja Theory is combining the two elements.
