Valve: Xbox 360 community 'head and shoulders above PS3' photo

On the same day that Randy Pitchford says that Valve are childish fanboys that bash the PS3, here comes Valve's Chet Faliszek ... kind of bashing the PS3. The game writer has stated that Xbox Live's community is "head and shoulders" above the PlayStation Network, citing it as a reason why Left 4 Dead 2 isn't going anywhere near a PS3.

"Right now for Left 4 Dead 2 we're looking at PC and 360 because the community aspects really fit the game -- it's all about playing with your friends," explains Chet. "But that's the short term. What we're looking at for the long term ... if it works out, it works out. Right now don't not buy it on the 360 because you think it's coming out on the PS3 -- it's not going to. Right? It's coming out on the PC and 360. It's going to be exclusive for that.

"In hooking up with your friends and the community aspects, I think the Xbox 360 is head and shoulders above the PS3. The 360 and PC are on par, right?"

I'm not saying anything this time. I'm going to calmly step away from the hornet's nest before I end up like MaCaulay Culkin in My Girl, and let you lot do with these quotes what you will. Have fun!

You see and exteneded amount of of social intergration from xbox live into other areas such as the Zune market place and the windows enviroment macking for a more rohbust platform where as sony has done almost little or nothing to foster a relatioship between its users and other media

Wait, I don't get it. Are they trying to say PS3 owners don't have friends? Am I reading this the wrong way? xD

Steam is not equal to XBL or PSN, ever. XBL > PSN > Steam. Maybe if he compared it to the Wii, I'd let this argument slide.

This wouldn't have been so surprising to see back in 2007, but now the PS3 is actually moving more units than the Wii...it seems like a really bad PR move.

But I do love Valve.

Xbox Live: Playing with your friends.
PSN: Playing with your enemies?

Also, what Tha Meat said.

The 360 and PC have active communities, I'll agree with that. But you take the good with the bad--the 360 has whining 7 year olds screaming "SMOKER!," but at least people use mics. The PS3 would have (typically) older players, but no one would use a mic.

SHITSTOOOOOOOOOOOORM.

but I would have to disagree, I'm always invited to chats and other game sessions by friends (and only half my freinds lists are dtoiders), we share advice, play together, actually start those text chat things , compare trophies ,about how much more community do you need to be a community???

kinda makes me wonder if hes actually used a ps3 longer than 5 minutes.

I don't understand the logic, I have a ton of PSN friends that I love playing online with. PSN needs a lot of improvement, but it's really only missing two key things, cross party chat and a cross game party system. I think chat will come soon, but i'm not sure if a cross game party system is actually possible, unless it only applied to new games.

The real problem is that it's up to VALVE to decided how good the multi-player is on PS3. They have the tools to make it work for their games, just like every other developer does.

The ps3 is lacking the party system, but hit games like Killzone 2, and Uncharted 2 have great lobby systems, specifically Uncharted 2. Blah I'm just getting frustrated.

You. Fucking. Liar.
I love Half-Life, honestly - for me, it's the best fps series ever made - and it's also in my top3 'games of all time'.
But.
If Valve likes X360 community so much...
... why they're doing nothing with the Orange Box on X360? Team Fortress 2, anyone? We still have fucking 6 maps, and nothing else.
Nothing.
This is how you treat 'Community, that is head and shoulders above PS3'?
Just... gosh.

I think the PC community is better then the 360 community. However, I wish that PC players had a central HUB like 360 owners have. PSN is ok, but nt as robust. At least it's free.

It probably has more to do with the coding being similar since they are both on microsoft products. I don't know.

All I know is I don't care. As long as I get to play L4D and HL on something then Valve can call the Pope a satanist.

Like I said before, I use Steam all the time, but by no means is it anywhere near XBL and if Valve thinks that it is, than they're just delusional. On Steam you feel so disconnected from the people on your friends list, unlike LIVE where you always feel connected to everyone on your list.

It's just a totally different experience and I don't get why people from Valve think that Steam is all of sudden on-par with XBL. You guys are not even close, so don't act like you are, because you're not.

Ehh.. I don't quite see it like that, with both consoles getting closer to being equal almost every day, I can't see much more of an incentive (looking at it from valve's standpoint) to port games like L4D2 over to the ps3 since the install base has grown quite a lot since the release of the slim.
And Valve couldn't possibly say that they don't have the money to port the game over to the system, especially with the sales of L4D, pre-orders of L4D2, whatever royalties they might receive from Steam, combined with the sales of ToB. I'd be surprised if, with as small of a team as they have, they burned through all the money the raked in with those cash streams.
And I play with people all the time on my ps3, what the fuck is valve on about with that? the only thing the 360 has over the ps3 community wise is volume. And thus potentially more dickwads. But my experience with the 360 community has been in small doses (Once owned a 360, never payed for online) so it's possible I'm talking out my ass.

Ok, I will agree with the PS3 online community isn't as lively and talkative, but if the alternative is a community with 80% shouting, cursing and generally talk shit like a 13 year old, I prefer PSN.

If Valve ever does decide to bring anything over to the PS3... it's going to be a really hard sell. I don't understand why a developer would shoot themselves in the foot like that - one never knows what the future might bring.

As I've repeatedly said... it seems like the devs at Valve need to take a Marketing 101 course... or just learn to STFUAJMG! (make games instead of play games).

This is completely true. Now I love vale they are my favourite game developers but if no good games make it to the ps3 then the PSN community will not grow and its a shame when I get ps3 exclusives with great online play and I am not being able the join games like on Xbox Live. So hopefully other developers will speck like this about the ps3's online so Sony sort it out because I love the ps3 just not for online multiplayer.

As much as I respect valve for the quality and fun of the games they put out, their execs need to stfu and just make games, just like Itagaki, Moore, Jaffe or especially Dyack. Goddamn Epic trolls. If they want to potentially lose the revenue from ignoring a major system like the PS3 though, by all means, let them.

Statements like this are unnecessary and unprofessional.

Are there more FPS and Third person Shooters on the 360 vs the PS3?

If so, I think this may be why they are "head and shouylders" above the PS3 community. The PS3 has more genres available and is not a shoot em up machine. There seem to be fans of FPS type shooters out there in comparison to gamers in general.

I'm increasingly pro-PSN (and starting to get pissed at paying for Xbox Live in light of that), but his statement is generally correct. Pretty much every 360 owner gets a mic with the system, whereas only some of my PS3 friends have microphones. Without a mic, the sense of community just isn't there.

However, comparing the 360 community to the PC community? PC wins by far. Hell, they invented the online community.

Steam > Live > PSN IMO.

My main problem with PSN is that a lot of players don't have mics. The PSN players tend to be nicer than the Live players though.

I wish that PS3s came with a cheap pack in mic.

communities are what you make of them. if you like the PSN community, you're likely a PSN user. if you like the XBL community, then you are a XBL user. as a consumer, liking (or hating) one over the other is natural because you have to choose which you are going to use. as a producer, making fun of one or the other is ridiculous and stupid as they are BOTH your consumer-base.

It's amazing what excuses Valve makes for not working on the PS3 when the main reason is they either don't have the ability or care enough to code for the PS3. Just admit it. Just admit it rather than turning to petty bullshit Valve. They built the source engine for PC. That's what it all comes down to.

To be fair, that title is misleading. It should be:

"Valve: Xbox 360 community FEATURES 'head and shoulders above PS3'"

ie he's not comparing the communities, just the tools to communicate with those communities. "Head and shoulders" might be a little strong, but generally I have to agree with him.

Used to be I viewed Valve as a "can do no wrong" kind of company, but the more they get into this petty shit-slinging, the more they smudge their own image, at least in my eyes. They keep this up, I may have to start letting my money talk for me.

This stinks of MS calling them up and saying "Shit, now they have Netflix! Can you have someone talk shit about PSN and make them look bad real quick? I don't care if it is a total lie, we need to knock them down a few pegs!"

It wasn't a stupid move. When they're talking about lfd2 and they say goof things about 360 users, it can only help the bottom line. "Wow the game creators think we're cool." You can tell that's what they're doing because the lumped in PC users with them, and I don't think many would agree about the PC community being anywhere near the 360 com. I don't think it's gonna be that big of a problem when they release something on the PS3 either. Sure we'll get the now standard petition, the few dozen "BOYCOTT" blogs, but in the end Valve makes a great product and PS3 owners know that if they don't jump at what Valve gives them, then they're not likely to see another release from them anytime soon.

Well, Steam and the 360 have been around much longer, so it should go without saying that they have a leg up on the PSN in that regard. That said, I still think Left 4 Dead would work just fine, for the most part, on the PS3.

Also, I find it interesting that everyone here is only talking about whether or not it was a "good move" to say this. If I were to say the exact same thing about PSN under one of the news items they'd all be calling me a fanboy. For a community who likes to toss that term around quite a bit, I don't see it much here.
