Valve: We didn't message correctly about Left 4 Dead 1 DLC photo

The whole Left 4 Dead 2 boycott nonsense seems to have faded, with butthurt "fans" of the game either slowly crawling back to Valve or quietly refusing to buy the game. Nevertheless, L4D writer Chet Faliszek has made it clear that the new Left 4 Dead DLC, Crash Course, was not made to appease anyone, and was originally supposed to release before the big sequel's announcement.

"I think in this case we just didn't message correctly," explains Faliszek. "We didn't make it clear that Left 4 Dead was still going to be updated. We just didn't think to mention it, we were focusing on other stuff.

"We, internally, always knew we were going to do cool new stuff, so we didn't say anything about the original game. Of course we also intended to get the Crash Course DLC for L4D out before E3, but some things held us up. I think if we had that out before the Left 4 Dead 2 announcement, then it would have been clearer for our intentions. Losing the opportunity to get that right hurt us, but I think we made the right choices otherwise."

It's not like the vast majority of the boycotters won't drop their so-called principles and buy Left 4 Dead 2 when it's released, so I don't think Valve's timing will have any significant harm. A few people might stick to their guns on the boycott front, but they'd only be hurting themselves, because Left 4 Dead 2 is quite awesome.

Yay. Valve finally admits screwing up in the press release. This was the #1 reason I gave Valve the >:| face.

Valve can do no wrong. They can put anthrax in a box and sell it to me with "anthrax you cunt" written on the cover in marker pen and I'd buy it and love them for it.

I had this dream where Gabe Newell slaps Bobby Kotick across the face, really hard, calling him a bitch. That happened in real life, right?

I'm betting they were going to do 4 stages, but reduced it to 2 in order to get it released in time to shut up the whiners.

@Sunzoo: I think what he means is that nobody cares what they have to say any more.

I'm not a "boycotter," and I won't be buying Left 4 Dead 2. I just don't think the "sequel" is enough of a departure from the original to warrant a separate game or a full price tag. If it had been an expansion pack that cost anywhere between $30-40, I would have been interested.

I just think it was rather naive of them to actually think no one would've reacted negatively with L4D2's announcement in less than a year especially after Epic & Digital Extreme's problem with Unreal Tournament 2004's announcement when addressing 2003 players.

@Jim

I don't think anyone, boycotters included, will regret buying L4D2 but I do think it makes people regret buying L4D1, buyers remorse. Knowing that L4D2 will allow importation of 1's official maps and custom maps more or less robs 1 of anything unique. So irregardless of DLC it will end up on the superior L4D2.

For the record I'm not boycotting L4D2, I do intend on getting it but unfortunately it's not a day one purchase for me if the entry price to it is $50. I know I'm in the minority on this but that's just the way things are.

If only more developers would admit that they can do wrong. This is why I love Valve, you may not like what they have to say, but at least they are straight up honest when they talk. Can't wait for L4D2.

All of this reminds me of "Why does Rock Band 2 exists ?"
Rock band 1 now it's just a track pack with exclusive songs. L4D 1 will be the most useless CD I will have when I guy L2D 2.

@ sunzoo,

"Faded? The group still has over 40,000 members, brah."

So there is a stagnant group of people still sitting in some arbitrary group that most of them probably forgot about by now. I think the point being made, brah, was that they've become a lot less vocal about their boycotting efforts.

Since several of the complaints by the boycott have been addressed by Valve now there is obviously less drive behind it. Not saying Valve changed anything but they certainly hadn't shared relevant information at the right time.

can't wait for both left 4 dead 2 and the new map, weee we weee we weeeeeeee

Left 4 Dead 2 is going to be so much better than 1 that i can't believe anyone who liked left 4 dead is complaining... The whole boycott must be full of 14 year olds who can't afford games. No way an adult brain could be dumb enough to follow that crap

@Hollow: You must be 14 yourself as you type quite immaturely.

L4d2 is coming way too early for a Valve game, especially since they're still going to be updating the first one, dividing the fanbase in two. Also they should be focusing on Half Life 2: Episode 3 since it's ridiculous how long that's taking where there already making another sequel for a game that came out not even a year ago?

I'll be getting the game for Gmod additions and such, but when it's 50% percent off Steam just like I bought the original for.

I can't believe anyone would accuse VALVE of cheating their fanbase. As good as they are to us, they deserve the benefit of the doubt, don't you think?

L4D2 doesn't look to offer enough for a full price. I fell for that with L4D, I don't plan on making the same mistake twice.

I'll look into it when it's down to $20 in a pawn shop.

I love how Jim acts as if his mere stating something makes it true. You must be proud to be gaming journalism's equivalent to Bill O'Reilly. The only differences being you're not rich and successful.

I like the O'Reilly comparison because I've no doubt Jim loathes O'Reilly. Yet he does uses the same tactic of raving obnoxiously just to be "controversial" and stir up attention for his otherwise uninspired and uninteresting commentary.

Yeah, people who disagree with you are stupid. *yawn*

I loved valve right up until L4D. I hated it already just on its own merits, and the breadth of its content was just adding insult to injury. Let's be honest: we all just bought it because we assumed that Valve + zombies = awesome. It would have been a decent HL2 mod, but for 60 bucks I felt utterly ripped off and for all the painstaking polish they talked about in the developer commentary I felt the gameplay was horribly "un-fun", especially given the low replay value. The "director" system that was supposed to extend the game's lfe just makes it MORE predictable, IMO. I found the enemies in AVP1 for the PC to be a lot scarier and less predictable, and they basically just spawned randomly around you, relying on the map layout to create variations in the action. I couldn't beleive it when they announced the sequel: a glorified DLC pack costing 60 bucks for a game that had already made me feel ripped off the day I got it.

In other words L4D FUCKIN SUCKS

just IMHO of course

If you don't salivate for L4D 2, then you just didn't play the first game PROPERLY. Best multiplayer experience I've EVER had.
