Valve has earned itself a reputation among more devout Sony fans as a dyed-in-the-wool villain. The developer/publisher is despised for not putting its games on the PlayStation 3, a sore point that only got more sore once Steam came to Mac. Valve's answer for these angered PS3 fans? The PS3 should be more like an Apple product and less like a Gamecube.
"Platform investments like the Mac are difficult because you have to be aware of what direction that platform is moving," says Gabe Newell, explaining the difficulty in supporting a format. "We need to target platforms that do a better job of looking like where we want to be in a few years. We would love to see the PS3 be more open like a Mac than more closed like a Gamecube.
"It makes it easier to justify those investments if that were the case."
Valve blows hot and cold with the PS3 all the time, and so far only The Orange Box has ever made its way to Sony's system. Hopefully Valve can support the PS3 properly in time, although until that day, feel free to keep saying how crap Valve's games are only to change your mind once Left 4 Dead gets released on Blu-ray. That's how it works, right?
Valve wants PS3 “open like a Mac,” not “closed like a Gamecube” [ScrawlFX]

Yeah... good luck trying to submit an iPhone app... they'll shut you down if you're not using a Mac, or even if a swear appears somewhere while they're testing it.
I am sure Sony would help them asap, it's not like "no, neither of us want money". And considering that some Valve employees have a history at Naughty Dog, they could just get some tips there.
The truth is Valve is too stubborn at times. And "Open like a Mac" is just terribly funny.
MAc's are far from open.
On topic: I still can't believe how messed up the world is when the Mac versions of a game are better than the PlayStation versions.
Open like a Mac?!?
Open like a Mac?!?
Open like a Mac?!?
What a completely oxymoronic thing to say.
Valve games are generally the only 360 games I'm genuinely jealous of. After reading this? Not so much, fuck it, keep em.
Get your platforms straight people. You CAN install Flash on a Mac if you choose.
This ^
I like how any time VALVe comments on Sony's draconian closed and closed-minded approach, the PS3 fanboi's say "OH WELL THEIR GAMES R SHITE" or "Valve games are generally the only 360 games I'm genuinely jealous of. After reading this? Not so much"
But like Jim said, when it comes out on Bloo-Reyz it will be godlike. Fucking children.
"Valve games are generally the only 360 games I'm genuinely jealous of. After reading this? Not so much, fuck it, keep em."
Gabe Newell's fat face doesn't make Valve games any worse. Just ignore what he says and his games become a lot more enjoyable.
PS3 = gay
sounds about right. Thanks for the entertainment Sterling, I'll be watching this one all day! Fanboys are having aneurysms, no doubt.
At least it would be honest, and with no stupid mistakes like "Open like MAC"..
Valve is more like "boohooes PS3 doesn't run on a PC architecture..." uh, everyone else in the game industry is capable of figuring out the programming guys. If you don't like money, go ahead.
Open platform
Apple product
Choose one.
Last time Valve wanted the PS3 to be more like an Xbox and the PC operating system. Now they want the PS3 to be more like a MAC?
Regarding the "openness" of the PS3 system... I think Valve must have their heads up their asses if they don't realize that the PS3 is the most open system out there. They should have a chat with EPIC about UT3. For the PS3 system we could freely download mods/mutators from the web (not Live or the PSN store). Devs could price their own products... UT3 DLC was FREE. Games can actually reference web driven apps or pages (can't remember the game, but the "help" section went to an online web page). The HDD in the PS3 can be freely swapped out, the PS3 has a web browser, it has the ability to use keyboard/mouse for games (UT3 did it), we can use external USB memory and USB driven peripherals - not an open system??
It's statements like "we would love to see the PS3 be more open" that make Valve seem stupid to PS3 owners.
Oh and regarding them as a dev... I'll definitely buy many of their games if they bring them to the PS3 - but I'll buy them used, not new. When Valve takes a "Public Relations 101" course and learns to quit pissing off a potential market then I might change my mind.
Pre-emptive STFU.
On topic:
I don't get it. Yeah, putting Steam on Mac was a good move and I guess it'll bring them a loooot of money now a apple product is the latest shiiiit that everyone and his neighbour wants but what has this thing to do with how "open" a system is? Sure thing a 360,Mac or Pc is much easier to program. They are based on the same technology. Suck it Gabe. Either you invest in new technology or you don't.
"We would love to see the PS3 be more open like a Mac than more closed like a Gamecube."
Say what now? Wtf is he trying to say here? 'Open'/'closed' in what regard? Mass market appeal? I guess. I reckon PS3 is about as open as the Mac platform, but that's just me...
At least it would be honest, and with no stupid mistakes like "Open like MAC".."
Not everyone in the real world has such a childish fanboy mentality of how the electronics industry works.
The fact is is that they don't believe it's a sensible business move for them. Which is fair enough, but they should just be honest about it.
And if you don't want to buy their games because they said bad things about your precious electronic brand, rather than any real fucking reason like you know, quality then you're a God-damned child.
I think Jimbo is just pulling pics from his personal collection. those are his BFF's.
Hooray for open platforms!
Now the people commenting about the accessories interchange for the PS3. You do know that I (a Mac owner) can install my own HDD, my own RAM, use any USB keyboard and mouse, and have external USB storage. So if you are going to use those characteristics to describe an open system then, by your logic, Mac is an open system too.
... except it's all spent on the Mac lol. Seriously though, are you calling people who dropped $600 on a game console a bunch of cheapskates?
really, i don't get what they are saying exactly... what are mac, and microsoft doing that sony is not?
