Valve to spend $10 million pimping Left 4 Dead on TV, billboards, and buses photo

Saying that gamers are excited for Left 4 Dead is a serious understatement. Pre-orders for the title are 60 percent higher than they were for Orange Box, and Valve says that L4D is EA's number one Xbox 360 game for the holiday.

With such positive reactions to Valve's new IP, the company has decided to invest $10 million on a massive ad campaign that will include commercials which are said to mix humor with horror, environmental ads similar to what Take-Two did with Grand Theft Auto IV, ads in magazines like Playboy, and marketing on Web sites.

If I'm forced to see ads for a videogame plastered all over the place, it might as well be for a game of Left 4 Dead's caliber, right?

Also, don't forget that a demo will be out in early November for Xbox 360 and PC; it's actually going to feature online co-op, so that should give us a nice glimpse of what's in store.

Wow it's nice to see Valve really going all out to promote one of their games like this. However, I'm a HUGE Valve fan, but I for some reason I'm a bit skeptical about L4D. I'll download the demo as soon as it hits Steam, but I won't be pre-purchasing this one just yet.

I will accept it only because its Left4Dead.

But how cool would it have been to see Gordon Freeman on the side of a bus. That would have been awesome.

It's simple really; kids will buy/play anything that has zombies in it.

I just started reading Walking Dead so I'm hyped for all zombie entertainment I can get.

Also, I liked the first character designs better than the new ones.

Their big excuse for not doing a PS3 port of this, and not updating Orange Box was that they were too small. Well, at least now we can say Valve's full of straight-up liars. Why do liars make such good games?

Probably because they didn't want to say "creating games for the PS3 fucking sucks," which while true, isn't something companies in the industry says about eachother often. At least not that openly.

I guess in Valve's mind it would make more sense to take the money they would have porting the game for the PS3 and invest it in advertising in the hopes that they'll make more money on the game that way.

@Blackhat, "creating games for the PS3 fucking sucks" which may or may not be true, but Valve hasn't tried yet, so they don't know that.

How about they pass the 10 million dollars to consumers by discounting the game. Betcha they sell just as many copies.

Side note, I wonder if sky high advertising budgets cuts into hiring enough quality people to make a video game better. Things that make you go hmmm....

you know, the game already has a bunch of hype towards it. I'd love to see some big viral campaign on valve's behalf. They could do something really cryptic that could reveal an interesting, but not quite a spoiler part of the plot. You know, just to set things in motion.
