Valve to announce Left 4 Dead DLC soon, crybabies photo

In a further attempt to quiet the ire of some disgruntled fans, Valve's Chet (!) Faliszek told Shacknews recently that not only is the promised DLC for Left 4 Dead a reality, but that an announcement regarding such would be on the way shortly. He went on to say that these new goods would also be escorted by promised enhancements like the team-based matchmaking update.

Valve's Marketing VP Doug Lombardi has also noted to Eurogamer that despite fire and brimstone, Left 4 Dead 2 is already seeing pre-order numbers that double those of its predecessor at this point in time away from its launch. While the bitching and moaning is bound to continue regardless, more word that Valve fully plans to uphold its promise to buyers of the original game should serve to calm a few overactive venom glands. We hope, anyway.

Do you think all the ruckus is still justified, or should some people take this announcement as a reminder to STFUAJPG?

Gamers are never happy, you should know that by now. Valve could release a dozen DLC packs within a week and people would still piss and moan that they are abandoning everything for Left 4 Dead 2.

New official content would be welcome and long overdue.

On another note, maybe Destructoid should give the job of reporting PC news to someone involved in PC gaming or just stick to reporting the facts, instead of slagging off people for being vocal about things that are largely beyond the realm of the more familiar console gaming.

Between this L4D2 shit and Jim serving up some of his usual ire for people pissed at the lack of LAN for Starcraft 2 it's pretty clear that there's a difference between what console and PC audiences expect, although it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realise that. I neither said nor insinuated it was a matter of intellect, so kindly go fuck yourself.

We PC gamers should be LESS annoyed that VALVe are ignoring L4D1, and not giving it any DLC, because we have a theoretically unlimited amount of user-generated-content. Same with Starcraft, if we can do LAN over internet (with Hamachi), we can sure as hell do internet over LAN, given a good enough reason. LAN should be in it, but to a PC gamer, it's not devastating it isn't, and to a console gamer... why are you playing RTS' on a console.

We have different expectations of PC games than console games. I expect easy modability, strong community, and continued developer support. Especially from Valve and Blizzard. Console games are one-offs that I play for a week or weekend and never touch again. PC games I continue play for months or years.

I really don't understand why so many Destructoid writers are so biased against PC gamers and consumers. People have different opinions and perspectives than you, being too stupid or ignorant to understand their perspective doesn't make you Ubermensch.

Why are users getting the brunt of this? When you pay for a title you expect there to be a good amount of content. There was 4 episodes with 5 levels or so each that lasted about 10-20 minutes each maybe? That is basically about 5-6 hours for the main game? It all depends on how you play the game of course but the director doesn't switch it up differently enough to consider it a worthy side argument. And then the multiplayer which was all right...but on what two or three of those levels?

Ok that's cool whatever...then they bring out a DL pack that just kinda lets you play some shit that already exists that should have already existed anyway but they forced the title out quickly to make money and publishing milestones? Bleh.

All 'whining' aside, the major issue is this: Don't promise major DLC after you've already put the sequel up for sale. That is the biggest and most aggravating insult they could have done. It's like oh you could buy these 2 new episodes for 20 bucks online for the older shittier game, or you could have the new and improbed L4D2 for 60 bucks with 7 new episodes and even more content and functionality that you wanted before.

It's fucking stupid. And whoever decided that was the way to manage the business deployments is a fucking retard. Why over jump your content deployment with the next incarnation?? Burnout Paradise is the model in which I'm contrasting this with. If they came out with a sequel to Burnout but then brought out the other downloadable content afterwards it would be a silly business move and would snub the users that were thinking you were going to support a product they paid for with expectations in mind of dlc to continue it's worth BEFORE the next development on the product line.

Just stupid. Stop calling people whiney babies... this is a matter of logistics and poor business organization.

Topher, Topher, Topher.. I completely agree with your point but lets keep the L4D2 boycott mock posts to just one or two a week. I think Jim already reached the quota. Hate to see Dtoid become the semi-offical home of whining maggots and thoughtless Valve haters on the Internet.

The world would be far safer place if Gabe Newell hadn't been caught in front of the press talking out of his ass, which I'm sure he was about all this so called free content that was in the pipe line for L4D. People can whine about expectations all they want, but all you are guaranteed is what's on the damn disc. When I bought KOTORII, I expected a finished product, but that sure as shit wasn't the case. Now I don't buy products from Obsidian, especially on the first day of release.

Now because TF2 has gotten this steady stream of free content, which does cost money for a studio, even a relatively small one like Valve to create, they think its the new standard, but its not. Its the exception, not the rule.

I for one, don't want a top notch studio running itself bankrupt because it has to meet the demands of morons who demand content for no compensation. Valve's a business. And a damn good one that is able to stay afloat despite creating relatively few titles. So when they want to capitalize on their recent success, I think they should. It could easily lead to Valve growing and being able to put out AAA at a faster rate than they do currently. Maybe we'd even see HL:Ep III before we all die.

But do the contingent of boycott trolls that infest destructoid care? No, because its not going to be free. Well, they can wallow in their own shit, because that's about all you can expect in this life for nothing.

If you're righteous enough to have an opinion on anything, you must simply accept the fact that someone will disagree and someone (the same person or someone else) will think your point of view is completely stupid and call you on it, uncerimonious as they may. The onus is on the belittled party to present some convincing reason for all their bally-hoo. Otherwise, people will still have their opinions about your opinion. Fancy that.

If you want neutered JOURNALISM, go else where. I for one am glad for the differing and vocal opinion. Flambater-ous or otherwise.

Gabe wasn't 'talking out of his ass', oucher... the promised DLC of movies, weapons, new special zombies, and characters came out of Doug Lombardi's mouth as well. How many more developers have to have had said it (I think even Chet mentioned new movies as DLC) before their failure to come through becomes a lie?

This is really simple: Valve told me about what is to come for their product, L4D. I got stoked. I bought L4D.

Then they tell me about L4D2, whose description is eerily close to the promised updates to L4D: new characters, new weapons, new movies, new special zombies.

Then I hear that they started work on L4D2 immediately after L4D's release. They didn't come back and say, "let's get going on that DLC!". No, they decided to work on a sequel.

We JUST got the finished SDK. We had the survival mode, which FINISHED the first game (updated two maps to work with VS. mode, and gave us survival mode... 3-10 minutes of hilarity per map, with one new map. Delicious.

Like I said, this is simple. Don't act like it's just people whining. It's a promise not being delivered on.

Considering I am a platform agnostic gamer, no I didn't say that. I only said people incapable of understanding differences of opinion are. How about you work on your reading comprehension?

There is clearly a basis for people being upset at Valve's actions, so if you don't care, just say you don't care. Instead the Destructoid staff is on a crusade mocking consumers and defending publishers. Destructoid has continually done this, I guess it earns them more free copies of Valve games, or invites to Valve's offices.

Too bad few in the gaming media have the balls and intelligence to stand up for consumers instead of trolling while copy and pasting press releases.

That's another good point... instead of taking this documented evidence of promises of DLC for L4D - content that precisely describes L4D2 - and taking to to Valve and saying, "Hey, what about this?", you know, like a journalist might do, D-toid, and many others, choose to actively defend Valve.

Valve doesn't need defending. It never, EVER has. The only time they ever really publicly screwed up was the September 30th, 2003 release date for Hl2 when they - as we know now - were nowhere near done.

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/index.html

That was interesting, but I didn't care. I knew HL2 was going to be a quality game (best game ever, in my opinion), and I was cool to wait until 2:00 a.m. November 16, 2004. Valve did not need defending, because their games speak for themselves.

They don't need Jim Sterling or whoever telling their getting up on forums or blogs and starting shit with a disgruntled consumer base. And hear this, I am a part of their most loyal consumer base.

No, no, no. Whine away you whining whiners.

Pure exec ass talking is what your so called promise is from Gabe Newell(which the word "promise" was never even in). If you truly believe that, are you also taking Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer to task for saying in front of press that there was going to be another X-Box next year?

The entire lynch pin of the boycotter's argument was a guy swinging dick in front of the press. Its part of the business. Its also THE ONLY INSTANCE THIS STATEMENT WAS EVER MADE BY ANYONE FROM VALVE. Not like it was a point in press releases, or advertisements, or the back of the damn box. Just one guy not knowing the full scoop before he opened his damn mouth.

There's just this grand delusion that companies' don't change their plans, or that people, even the mighty Gabe Newell don't put their foot in their mouths in front of the press.

If people feel slighted by buying an awesome online co-op shooter that didn't get all the bells and whistles they thought they were going to get because they read in on some story on the Internet, then they will be more careful with their money. A valuable lesson, and a cheap price to learn it at only 50-60 bucks. Be mad at Valve for not putting a fully fleshed offering on that disc, but don't be mad because times change, shit happens, the economy tanked, and you read some story on the Internet about Gabe Newell swinging dick about his new best selling title.

i really don't think indicating a sequel to come out, while still working / releasing content is wrong at all. i don't think it's a cock tease, and i think that if anyone is angry about valve's decision, isn't really thinking it clearly.

ok let's put all the "why the hell is valve talking about a sequel when we need to see DLC first?" aside. the fact of the matter is, L4D is getting it's DLC, AND a sequel. doesn't everybody win? i'm just so confused.

@woocifer - it sounds like to me you do play SOME valve games. i mean ... look at counter-strike. it's been given many revisions since beta (when not owned by valve) to this day. there is CS:S, but CS1.6 is still getting play. LIKE WHOA. i've been playing CS1.6 for about 8 years, and I'M STILL PLAYING THAT AND NOT SOURCE. people will make the right decisions on what games they play. if they don't wanna get l4d2, then don't. but to think that valve is doing something "wrong" or "unfair" is ridiculous.

woo, you ever work retail? how about electronic retail? ever get those customers who are like 3 years outside their warranty but STILL EXPECT YOU TO FIX THEIR SHIT FOR FREE? yeah that's what you sound like right now. they came out with a game, and you expect them to keep releasing DLC when technically, they don't have to. you're missing the point where all this DLC is absolutely free, and that the only people really losing money is valve. i mean, do you want them to charge you like Harmonix / EA does with rock band? i think buying all that shit separately is bad enough.

First off, the media DID take Balmer and M$ to town over that new 360 thing. It was pretty much everywhere, in case you didn't notice. How do you know about it? Because there was speculation and coverage everywhere. Questions thrown at M$'s face, and they responded and said, "our bad". With L4D2, the media is just rubbing their dick all over it, telling L4D customers to sit down and take their medicine.

And please, please... go to these links, and tell me about execs talking their mouth off:

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169669

http://www.videogamer.com/news/valve_details_post_left_4_dead_launch_plans.html

That's three "Instances", in my five minutes search on google. How many instances does it take before the matter becomes important? 5? 10? That there is one at all seems like cause for a question or two from a journalist to valve. I have yet to see ANY article throwing those quotes to Valve, looking for a response.

I don't think Gabe is a mighty God at valve. In fact, as I understand, there is no true hierarchy within the company. But their most public faces - Gabe, Doug, and Chet, have all told us about what's to come. That became a $60 package one year later.

And you're right, I will be more careful with my money, I have learned my lesson. When L4D2 comes out, I will stand by my boycott, and continue to play the game I bought in November of '08, and support the valve that created that content.
