Wait, what? Prior to Left 4 Dead, Valve was working on a prototype for a "flying fairy game." In an interview with PC Gamer, Gabe Newell and other leading men at Valve spilled the details.
"That was a useful failure to us, because it was so clearly dumb that it made us say, 'OK, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?'"
"It was so bad," Gabe explains, "you wanted to ask yourself: 'How could we make a game that was this bad? And how should we make a game?' And we said we should focus on what we do really well, so why are we doing this game which was kind of a ... it wasn’t really an RPG ... it was this action fantasy sort of role playing game that had no story."
"And then we said 'OK, that’s so horribly wrong. What we should focus in on is AI and playing in co-op, and that’s the interesting opportunity.' That was where Left 4 Dead came from." The more you know!

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That picture is dated 2002.

By the way, is that an actual screenshot of the game?
Way better than this one:
I call bullshit. Valve wasn't working on Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studio's was. Valve only absorbed that company after it was being made. In the commentary in the game they said the influence was from playing Counter Strike with the other team bots all with knives and they built on that.
Thank you I can't sleep now
how did that get past the image filter?
Hell you still have zombie mod in counter strike source, and the spawn which is zombie escape.
in this equation?
The two stories aren't mutually exclusive...
That's hilarious though. I wonder what the process was to narrow it down to a fairy flying game.
Coincidentally I also plan to move out tomorrow.
This is all 100% true. I'm not even joking.
Although speaking of Valve I do plan on buying a little gnome on the way out.
A ton of bad games get squashed before release. Just because a lot of bad games are released doesn't mean there's not even more shit that never gets out.
And trust me, there is.
That kind of subject matter would probably go down well with the people who currently buy Imagine:Babiez and Barbie Horses and all that crap. However, if Valve were behind it, odds are it could have been good.
Turning casual gamers who play crap into casual gamers who don't is a good thing.
However, if Valve couldn't do anything with it, then no harm & no foul.
Maybe someone will run with the idea now.
