Valve talks canceled 'flying fairy' RPG photo

Wait, what? Prior to Left 4 Dead, Valve was working on a prototype for a "flying fairy game." In an interview with PC Gamer, Gabe Newell and other leading men at Valve spilled the details.

"That was a useful failure to us, because it was so clearly dumb that it made us say, 'OK, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?'"

"It was so bad," Gabe explains, "you wanted to ask yourself: 'How could we make a game that was this bad? And how should we make a game?' And we said we should focus on what we do really well, so why are we doing this game which was kind of a ... it wasn’t really an RPG ... it was this action fantasy sort of role playing game that had no story."

"And then we said 'OK, that’s so horribly wrong. What we should focus in on is AI and playing in co-op, and that’s the interesting opportunity.' That was where Left 4 Dead came from." The more you know!

Hahah 'Flying Fairy' idea turned out to be a Zombie shooter game.
By the way, is that an actual screenshot of the game?

Could you imagine working on a game for a couple of months or longer and then someone is just like this is crap lets cancel it. All that time wasted! Its so weird to think of valve doing a flying fairy game, maybe its something even they couldnt pull off.

I call bullshit. Valve wasn't working on Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studio's was. Valve only absorbed that company after it was being made. In the commentary in the game they said the influence was from playing Counter Strike with the other team bots all with knives and they built on that.

Oh, okay. I was scared for a second that some delusional shit was going on at Valve, but clearly they're perfectly aware of how stupid this sounds.

Actually, besides the fact that it apparently sucked, this game interests me greatly. If only because it seems so different and unique for a company like Valve.

I thought Turtle Rock worked on it after they had been absorbed by Valve. They did Condition Zero and made Source maps.

Jack8274 is correct although it would be better to quote zombie panic or zombie master or what ever the stratergy zombie escape mod it was.

Hell you still have zombie mod in counter strike source, and the spawn which is zombie escape.

Come on Valve. Citizen Kane. Strive for that shit!

That's hilarious though. I wonder what the process was to narrow it down to a fairy flying game.

You all know, most other companies would have produced and released this crap anyway. It's nice to know a company actually realised their game was pathetic and canned it straight up rather than foisting the abortion onto consumers.

I do not have much to say about this article... I would just like to point out that I actually live above a "Fairy Shop" (as well as a burger place).

Coincidentally I also plan to move out tomorrow.

This is all 100% true. I'm not even joking.

Although speaking of Valve I do plan on buying a little gnome on the way out.

A ton of bad games get squashed before release. Just because a lot of bad games are released doesn't mean there's not even more shit that never gets out.

And trust me, there is.

It's a shame (and hear me out):
That kind of subject matter would probably go down well with the people who currently buy Imagine:Babiez and Barbie Horses and all that crap. However, if Valve were behind it, odds are it could have been good.

Turning casual gamers who play crap into casual gamers who don't is a good thing.

However, if Valve couldn't do anything with it, then no harm & no foul.

I would have liked to see where this would have gone too. Valve's putput is heavily based in fps games, so this would have been a welcome bit of variety to their catalogue.

Maybe someone will run with the idea now.

Hey Valve! I know what you are good at, making Half Life games! Yeah, you should totally make a new Half Life game, like say, maybe a Half Life 2 Ep.3 or something. I bet you would be good at it!
